Best job I ever had in my life was working with Columbia, loved every minute, I started in Idaho on the log landing and worked out in the woods setting chokers, it was a wonderful life, worked in Idaho Montana California Oregon Washington (was in Washington during mt Saint Helens) even logged in the Carolinas brrr that water was cold
Thats me hooking up @ 2:03 "2 on 2..75 Clear!!", me calling Kerry to "Pick this one up and swing toward the river m8" @ 3:48 Some awesome mahi memories!! The Rush of Helicopter Logging!!
I spent 1 year under the hook in 1974/75 . Started in Packwood Wa, went to northern Idaho and ended up in northern California. Broke my arm on a motorcycle accident on a sunday and had to go home. I don't know how long I would have stayed with them had that not happened. I love aircraft, helicopters are cool, in those early days the would let us ride with them for 1 fuel cycle. Pilots I remember, Kent Boyak, Fred Penington (the cowboy) Myron Bagorn and the Italian nik-named Luigie. Got some time in the seat of the 966 Cat loader in California. My buddy Pat and I were Known as the itchy/bitchy landing rats. Spent some tme hooking, didn't like it much, choker setting was better, but spent most of my time chasing landing. What a great life experience, some many stories could be told of that time.
I flew the '46 as a Marine out of Whidbey Island, WA for several years. We never did logging operations but plenty of other military missions using the hook. I have vivid memories of flying through and over the forests of the Northwest!
I remember my heli-days!! Run in to save your job, run out to save your life!! Ha ha yea! Extremely happy I did it, Thanks Jake,Ron, loader man "Lou",Scott Parnell,Wayne,Joe Ross,Steve Newell, "Fossil " & Gerome Moreno,"the dancing bear" a big bucket of roto-wash!!
