    • @jainouye
      @jainouye 5 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Lol. Yes but population helps to offset smaller shtf scenarios. Have neighbors close helps you survive and thrive in average situations. In Minnesota a mini shtf is a 12+ inch snowfall. If I didn't have neighbors I would have struggled for a week instead of a day.

    • @kftc1980
      @kftc1980 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      jainouye That depends on the neighbors. In an area where your neighbors are as capable and resourceful and have as much to lose as you, absolutely. To me that means somewhere fairly rural where people are naturally self reliant, but not necessarily selfish.

      @WarHawk- 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @Kevin R. - A large percentage of the population simply do not have access to "the middle of nowhere" nor the knowledge and physical ability to survive even if they could get there. The real fact is that within a very short time after a SHTF event, most people would b fortunate to be able to travel even as much as 30 miles without being molested, robbed, injured, or killed by others. It is more doable to find a defensible position close by and stay put for awhile, at least until the initial violence of anarchism runs its course.

    • @kftc1980
      @kftc1980 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Charles V Swenson The middle of nowhere is relative. There are places where people live with millions of others within 20 miles of them, and other places where there are less than a hundred thousand people within 100 miles.
      Moving from an overpriced overpopulated coastal city to an inexpensive smaller city or town in a red state is not hard to do, it is just a question of seeing the reasons to do this, and then going and doing it.
      Where I live now a 1200 sq ft house on a suburban lot is valued around 400k. Where I am about to move to, a larger house on several acres with a well and a septic system and a basement costs around 300k. It isn’t a question of access, it is a question of priorities and wisdom.

    Horses are a "POOR EFFICIENCY machine" when running on only grass. You NEED grain to keep a "working horse" healthy and in optimum shape. Cows and Bison are much easier to provide for than a horse (which cannot even eat moldy hay without digestive issue). A cow-drawn cart can carry a MUCH HEAVIER load than a horse can. Oxen make the best hauling beasts having the advantages of a horse (easily trained) with a cow (powerful and easily maintained). Goats can also be an effective method of drawing a cart. They are even easier to care for than oxen/cows are. Dogs require meat but can haul larger loads than you would think. They can also be used for protection and hunting.

      Oxen or cows, when pulling a wagon, will also need "enhanced nutrition" but that can be something like hay or alfalfa which is easier to come by in a SHTF scenario.

Also gives us time to build a bug out location as needed. We have 87 gallons of diesel in our fuel tank.. a diesel heater that uses roughly 1L a hour to heat the boat.. do cooking on shore and only move when wind allows or use diesel if we have to.. also gives us the ability to not only skip the country, but skip the continent as well.. odds are the entire world wont be in chaos.. so go somewhere that is still stable.

      Electric bikes will go down in price. I believe that they will be about $299-$500 more than a good conventional bike within 5 years, have a 100 mile range. and double that with a spare battery. lightweight foldable and portable solar panels to charge the batteries will also be available and relatively inexpensive. Within 10 years I believe electric assist bicycles will constitute most of the bicycle market and cost only about $100-$250 more than a non electric bike. The same will be true for electric motorcycles, electric ATVs, and electric cars and light trucks. Solar panels will also become much cheaper and more efficient.Charging stations independent of the grid will abound, perhaps most parking lots and many roads will be covered by solar panels. Your vehicle won't need to be plugged in in order to charge, charging will be wireless, and perhaps "on the fly". This technology will cost less than ICE vehicles do today.

    Suzuki DR650 dual sport motorcycle. I have a 2011 model, I bought it new and so far have 37,000 miles on it. All it's needed (for regularly repleacable parts) is oil/filter changed every 5,000 miles, tires every 10,000 miles, one set of brake pads front/rear, and my first chain/sprocket set lasted 25,000 miles (I care for the chain regularly), except for the front sprocket which I replaced every 8k miles (it bears the most torque load so it shows signs of wear first, and front sprockets are only about 18$.). It gets 55MPG on surface streets, goes off-road, and hits the highway at up to 115mph if need be. Its simple, reliable, parts are cheap, and anyone with a little mechanical experience can keep it humming. It's a great bike. Add a bigger gas tank, a small windshield, some panniers (hard saddlebags), and you're ready to go anywhere. I'm so glad I bought it.

    EMP's:
    Sooooo many people see EMP's as some circuitry-murdering insta-genocide of all things electronic.... That's NOT true! Computers and such will be JUST FINE after an EMP, as long as it was powered down and wasn't in the direct area of the pulse...
    Your '17 BMW in Connecticut is NOT going to be completely useless because of an EMP over Kansas, or even Washington DC.
    EMP's are a ridiculously overblown myth.

    • @eternapesadilla2355
      @eternapesadilla2355 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You're wrong. It depends on the EMP's potency. It simply depends on the bomb. The bigger the bomb the worse it is. And seeing as it isn't that complicated to make. If they really wanted to make a bunch of emp's that flatline an entire city through and through they could.
      Granted, popular knowledge of government-op's EMP is that they are only good for busting the main grid. But since when are goevernment secrets public? They are called secrets for a reason. And as a scientist i can assure you the physics behind an EMP blast is quite simple and any government who wanted to throw billions of dollars at it could easily make EMPs that kill every single electronic in a city.
      So it's not impossible. I'll admit it's improbable, but so was a world wide curfew in January 2020... so... never say never.

I made it more than half way before I had to stop and get fuel again.

  • @MG.50
    @MG.50 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    A couple of comments.
    1. When I was much younger (about 45 years ago) I was planning a long trek (backcountry hike/travel) of about 950 miles. I realized I could not carry enough consumables, even considering periodic deviations to "civilization" fo resupply. Talking with a forest ranger and very experienced backwoodsman I met in Wyoming or Montana, we discussed various modes of transporting additional gear for such extended nomadic excursions. I had considered horses and mules, both for riding and transporting food, camp gear, etc. He suggested donkeys (burros). He pointed out they can carry up to 150 pounds each, and they are like dogs: where a horse will wander off, buffos will not and tend to like hanging out with you. Domestic horses also require more medical care, just like humans, so look for "mountain horses" raised in cold, harsh climate of the mountains.
    2. Hovercraft are another option too often overlooked. Look at the options at Universal Hovercraft (www.hovercraft.com), the Hoverwing being the most impressive and my favorite. Hovercraft traverse water, land, ice and snow, mud, sand, etc. Most ride a few inches above the ground, limiting their utility, but the Hoverwing model uses ground effect with a pair of stubby canvas covered "wings", allowing it to hop over obstacles and "fly" for short distances. The ground effect does not allow for true flight, and the higher it goes, the less stable it becomes. However, this makes it a true all terrain vehicle, and I would take it in many scenarios over a traditional 4-wheel ATV, except for the lack of sudden stop brakes.
    The Hoverwing model had two fans, one for downward thrust and a larger one for forward thrust. With a "hop" height in excess of 10 feet (better than 3 meters) this vehicle can clear downed trees or even roadblocks at speed. Top cruising speed is around 60 mph with a range of 160 miles (unless fitted with a larger gas tank). Payload capacity, including fuel, passengers and gear, was close to 500 or 600 pounds after subtracting the vehicle weight of around 800 pounds. You are not moving these around by hand unless on a trailer or dolly. (Flatbed trailer behind my bugout vehicle was always my vision.) Check their website for accurate details, as I am writing this from memory.
    In an interview their chief designer, a retired aeronautical engineer, would not say the maximum altitude this vehicle could achieve, mainly because anything over 10 feet requires registration as a light sport aircraft. Other articles I read estimated 10 to 30 feet as easily achievable for short hops, and 50 feet a possibility, but it would be VERY unstable beyond 20 or 30 feet. Ground effect is meant to operate near the ground. This is NOT an aircraft. Drive it off a cliff and it is as aerodynamic as a brick. But as an ATV it excels for many scenarios.
    The Universal website looks like they have reduced their offerings since the last time I looked, but at least they still offer kits and plans.

About the only thing I'd the rethink is the tyres, they are Maxxis Crossmarks, semi comp tyres and are a bit thin, so some cheap Chinese knock-off tyres should be more puncture resistant and last a lot longer, besides being cheaper. Or I could tape the inside of the tyres to add more puncture resistance.

    I'd say a diesel-powered 4WD camper converted VW combi van. On your way to the place where you can keep horses or donkeys. If you're not an experienced horse rider go for donkeys and carts. They are easier to keep than horses, eat less and are safer to handle. They can also help defend flocks of other animals (donkeys can kill wolves or large dogs if they need to, and keeping a few donkeys with flocks of sheep is a well-known wolf deterrent in mountain areas). They are also probably the cuddliest way of transport.
    You mention hot-air balloons, which shows that you're not serious. One, in the 1800s there were no hot-air balloons, there were only gas balloons. Attached to the ground by long cables these made good observation points on a battlefield, until weapons were invented that could shoot them down. Modern hot-air balloons were re-invented in the 1960s when propane and lightweight nylon came available. Great fun to fly (I should know, I've been doing it for more than 30 years), but as they drift with the wind when flying free, they are not a practical means of transport from A to B. At best a balloon might be able to get you out of A over an otherwise impossible obstacle (say a major river, or famously in the Cold War, the Iron Curtain between East and West Germany), but once landed after one or two hours of flight you will generally not have gotten very far and you must abandon the balloon - absent a way to refuel and reinflate it you will at best have the burners for cooking food for a while using the pilot flames, with the few litres of fuel left, while camping out next to the balloon. The nylon envelope might make good shelter material... Anyway, not very practical - you can't take a lot of luggage either - maybe a decent rucksack for each person on board, that's it. After the 20 to 40 km flight you will be forced to continue on foot.

      Shoot i like the way you think you could easily rig it up like a killdozer situation. I just think it sucks fuel. I think we need tovreosst the urge to go full serial killer.dystopia when we are in the thick of the apocolypse because alliamces will still be how the next colonies will form. I opt for a motorcyle because it consumes less fuel so i think it would be smart for people like you and me to team together early for the long term because you will be stick going slow and youre suck not being able to plan a path but needing a bucket to even dig your path if you have to. To me motorcycles i will try to scout ahead youre path consuming little fuel butni cant carry many things. I may find a spot thats impassable by motorcycle and i need a guy like you can swing arounf and clea the path and yiur large vehicle will be lime a pack mule. Maybe 4 of us guys work in teams of two and we scout and loot and loot for people etc ahead a ways so by the time someone like you snows up for the already collected loot to be loaded up. I think the bihhest mistake we csn make is to work agaisnt certain people we come across. We have paragliders that can scout ahead farther than motorcycles and having groups with capabities like this early in the apocolypse when there is still fuel stored to make it a while will make a huge difference in how many people you find that will join your group and extend uts capabilities. You need people farming, hunting and gathering as well at the same time. To have this many capabilities one person cant do alone. You start collecting people the gorup geys bigger you have children, you need people to defend them when many arent around doing work to keep the colony alive which is when they will be most vulnerabke amd when their defence will be important. It will also be important to be smart and not get involved in situations that arent worth it. Maybe youre area isnt going tk make it and your group has to leave fkr an area whwre another group is know. To exiat. They wont elt your group into their group if its not full of farmers educators medical knowledge, people capable of huntig farming fighting. If we all retract into our holes for the apocolypse we will be doomed.
      I just think tour option has cpaability but its not getting you far easy in an apocolypse. With a motorcycle witj new tires if you had several sets orepared to burn through, you could go 1500 miles each way maybe 50mpg 3 gallons for 150 miles. Thays a big. Ranfe for little fuel in an apocolypse. Veing a motorcycle i wouldnt be abke to bulldoze a pathway like you could which is a limitation but one tank of fuel would get me to the farthest colony away from me thats even worth visiting in an apocolypse. So id be able to tale around thinhs like messeges, sadslebags could hold a lot of cans of food.

With the older models and a good bumper guard you could pretty much shove any stalled Vehicles out of your way. And you can keep as many as four people in the truck, with two beds and a small refrigerator . They are a little difficult to learn how to drive but can be easily taught to someone. Because if (when) you get tired old or injured, the bike will hold you up and not fall over.

      There is a bike trailer on you tube (home made i think) that carries a big enough solar panels to charge a bike. Just an idea.
      're the trike idea, I used an adult trike to carry my children about on when they were small, and it was a HEAVY machine. I live in a hilly area, and quickly got very strong legs . Then major disadvantage was potholes in the roads. On two wheels it's easy to avoid them ,on three it's getting difficult. And in a SHTF world the roads are going to get bad quickly. Most trikes aren't built for off road.

    Suggestion: I would avoid any train tracks and also highways if at all possible. The reason for this is simple, everyone knows them. They are useful landmarks.
    Marauders *WILL* set up ambush points along them, and you risk getting attacked and stolen from or killed (or taken as a slave) because no matter how Rambo you think you are...you are not likely to win against a group of armed meatbags unless you also have a group of trained and armed meatbags yourself.
    Other places of note to avoid would be malls, hospitals, sporting goods stores, supermarkets and known warehouse depositories. Those are going to be taken over by some group or another (or you could take them over if you have a group) but if that is not part of your plan you are better off avoiding them.
    If you aren't prepared enough to last at least a year (barring unforeseen circumstances) then that should be your first order of business. The best choice, if at all possible, is to hunker down and wait for the massive die-off.
    After a year it is likely that SOME form of order will be restored, depending on the nature of the crisis, and you can then decide how you wish to interact with that form of order.

      EXCELLENT ADVICE - succinctly stated ! As you said, a major SHTF scenario will probably result in massive deaths within a single month of the "event". Many "problem people" will either die of hunger, suicide, disease, or violence during this period. If you can avoid them, your chances of survival improve dramatically.

      @@marytica123 Commentary: There will actually be several "waves" of death that occur after a large-scale collapse depending on the nature of it.
      No matter which form the collapse takes, if it is severe enough to cause great disruption there will be several phases.
      *Wave 1*
      These will be the meatbags which are caught in the initial occurrence who die. If it is severe or affects national level or greater, then shortly following the event there will be others who die to accident, violence, rioters, or even a government attempting to implement martial law.
      *Wave 2*
      This will occur a few weeks to a few months after the event. If services are greatly disrupted this will result in a whole lot of meatbags (especially those in large metropolitan cities) to quickly run out of supplies. Dehydration, lack of medicine, and possible toxins or contaminants will kill even more. The elderly and children are likely to be heavily affected. There is also the probability that bodies will be lingering in the streets, growing ripe as they decay and spreading other diseases.
      *Wave 3*
      This will be from malnutrition setting in, as most meatbags do not have the skills to grow their own food and scavenging will only last so long. Particularly if the electrical grid is out, backed up sewer systems and rotting food and rotting bodies will cause many outbreaks of plague and death. Those who do not die to starvation or infection will have to contend with desperate meatbags who were not prepared.

      @@blindhog2756 Statement: That is precisely my plan as well. Depending on the nature of the catastrophe will dictate whether I bunker down or not. That is always an option but won't be used unless it is a viral or nuclear threat, the bunker will remain as a fallback option.
      Either way, however, I will be well off the beaten path in the first place. I already have chosen a location and built it up which is difficult to enter into by foot or vehicle. It has defensible positions to slow down any who would try to enter.
      If all goes well, I will essentially disappear for a year or more and no meatbags who are not a part of my group will even know where I am.
      If we are discovered, well, I've already prepared a range of detection systems, traps, and outposts and countermeasures.
      Suffice it to say that some of my countermeasures cannot be deployed until after a collapse, but they will be.
      Assuming it isn't an EMP or solar flare storm, I will be able to monitor at least some things via radio and visual surveillance so I know when it might be a good time to emerge.
      This is why you want to be prepared, so you don't have to scavenge or deal with unfamiliar terrain or ambushes from marauding meatbags.

    One type of transport that has been around for thousands of years is the Chinese wheelbarrow. It's one large wheel, of wood, about 4 feet or so in diameter with an axle in the middle. Handles on BOTH ends and a platform over the top and down each side. It can easily carry several hundred pounds, even small people (kids or infirm), When full it needs two people to handle it, one on each end. Lightly loaded, maybe onlty one person to handle it. It was originally designed to allow it to follow narrow, single track paths (long before carts and two track paths like those used for cars. It can follow a single track only about 3 inches wide.

For relatively short periods it can survive (like a human) on relatively little food beyond what it can forage (provided it can get water!). I read a very good article about pre-prepping a remote location, so that when you get there, the heavy construction has been done up front (eg building foundation, fireplace with chimney, etc), so that when you arrive, construction can get under way asap. Modern materials will also help considerable (eg polycarbonate roofing sheets are extremely light, strong and indestructible, and some extra tools indispensable, block & tackle, splitting wedges, felling axes, saws, etc).

    True story. Several years ago I was at a job where my average commute was about 45 - 60 minutes. One afternoon we got a freak snow storm. Caught the weather forecasters completely off guard. What was supposed to be a light dusting turned into a snow storm that made many roads unpassable within 30 - 60 minutes. I got stuck in this with a quarter of a tank of gas. Traffic was bumper to bumper. If you pulled off to fill you probably weren't getting back on the road short of a fellow commuter looking to get some karma points and let you back on the road. My commute that afternoon took six hours. I started at 1 PM got home at around 7 PM. I literally had my wife and her sister checking navigation apps and feeding me live information on which roads were closed and which side roads I could take to get around the closures. I literally thought I wasn't going to make it home that night and would get stuck on the road as the road clearing simply wasn't really happening yet. I got home on fumes. My dad always said to keep at least 1/2 a tank of gas in your vehicle. But in this case I got complacent. It almost cost me. If it wasn't for the use of cell phones and the availability of live updates on navigation apps I wouldn't have made it home that night. I'd have spent it likely on the side of the road freezing in a vehicle whose engine I couldn't run because I was low on gas.

    Thanks for this. I can ride a motorcycle, I can ride a horse, but my family can do neither. We can ride bicycles, but transport that rely on our physical ability doesn't thrill me either.....I like the idea of electric bikes (more silent), but would prefer a mo-ped so that when you choose to peddle, you are generating power that recharges the battery.

      Good idea ! During the last few hurricanes here in Florida, the roadways were jammed with people trying to "evacuate" - even though few had a safe destination in mind. A dirt bike gives you off-road capability, and on-road maneuverability. Only drawback is lack of cargo space & carrying capacity - pretty much limited to your backpack(s) and maybe "saddlebags".

      Yeah that's excellent, i live in "the third world" everybody here rides honda click and honda wave scooters, they're awesome fun machines, very reliable, nimble and fast, they'll take you anywhere a bicycle does like forest trails but also on the freeway and very convenient in traffic,
      You can mount carry bags and an extra fuel can to it and carry 100kg of stuff up a mountain without sweat.
      They're inexpensive and you give you around 100 miles per gallon.
      They're like the modern day horses or the AK 47 of transportation. Personally I'll bet on those.
      Samall offroad bikes like yamaha tw200 are awesome as well

    The best fuel is Propane, it never goes bad so will store as long as the container does not rust through, you can glean propane from warehouses that have fork lifts, and few can use it for their own vehicle.
    Your house generator can sit for a decade, never run, and will start and run on the fuel it had from the get go!

    Reminds me of my first street bike when I was 16! I had a Honda rebel 250, pretty nimble, SUPER cheap on insurance, it got like 100 miles to a gallon of gas! Top speed was only 85 mph, but I used to do it almost everywhere I went, lol. One of those with a set of knobby tires, it would go just about anywhere you wanted to, even with bald street tires, I used to take it MILES into the State gamelands!
