Today I played a random spotify playlist by some bands like fit for a king, erra, etc. And this one came across. I couldn't believe that such a masterpiece never came across before. Of course the main riff blew my mind, so I've had to come here and look if someone covered the song. Thank god this one of yours was here. Great playing, great technique, and very clean recording. btw what tone and preset did you use for the chorus riff? I use neural dsp too
@@ThyRenaissance that was the granophyre, it's just the default preset dialed slightly to my liking. Only one mic (57MS). I don't use the tone pedal. And I also have the nameless noise gate in the chain, along with Reaper RealEQ

Good stuff! Did you leave the original song completely untouched in mixing? Did you doubletrack and panned L and R or what was your process?
Thanks! Yeah original song was untouched, I did doubletrack L and R for the rhythm guitars but the leads were just one track centered in the mix. In hindsight I wish the guitars I recorded were a bit louder relative to the original track but I think it's still possible to distinguish my guitar recording.

What's the trick to hitting the pitch harmonics in the beginning tapping section?
I'd recommend getting really comfortable with where your picking hand is going to have to hit the string, that took me a while because it ended up being higher along the string (towards the neck) than I thought. It's difficult to get it perfect I found though, in the recording of course I have the luxury of editing it to sound perfect since it's a cover.

The low string is a G, the top 6 are in drop C
@@Chris971. So if I ever get me a 7 string, would it then be GCGCFAD tuning? Didn't think you could down tune a 7 string that low :P
@@jedimastergarcia87 yes that's correct. In the scheme of 7 string tunings being used today, it's not actually all that low! I use it in drop F# as well with the same strings 😄
@@jedimastergarcia87 If you have the gear, you could just play in Drop C and then for the breakdown and outro use a pitch shifter to go down to that G. I've never seen Daniel play a 7 string in Phinehas, so I'm sure that's what he did. Not like he's going to switch guitars in the middle of a song live, after all. I just posted tabs of this on Songsterr and Ultimate Guitar that I transcribed from the stems on the Deluxe version of the album, so if you want to take a look at that, that might give you some ideas.

Yeah right? I didn't expect to use it either, but the breakdowns are in a low G and they are still riffing on the high strings during those breakdowns so I didn't see any other way. I don't know if they actually used 7 strings for this song but it worked for me haha

@@ThatBeTheQuestionthat's possible but more tricky imo. look at the tabs I made. how did they play the drop C riffs that are interspersed throughout the breakdown while also pitch shifting down to G? I guess it wouldn't be too hard to tap the pitch shifting pedal for only the chugs. But I haven't heard of bands doing that mid riff
@@Chris971. easy. Switch to G for the breakdowns, then back to C for the rest of the song.
@@ThatBeTheQuestion yes I mean that's technically possible but it would be harder to play because I explained that the riffs in between parts of the breakdown are in drop C. You can find pictures of their guitarist using a 7 string so in all likelihood that's how he played it.
