Yeah, really reasonable, a friend of mine got married a few years ago and they initially started out with a full budget of £30k, dress ended up being £27k ish on its own. Custom made, absolutely stunning and so beautifully fitted, but christ that's a deposit on a house right there like 😂
Obviously 1400 is a lot of money but I personally feel better about that money being spent on the product you received rather than 400 on something made in a terrible factory + not fitted well
£1400 might be a lot for a lot of people but I definitely expected more for a custom made dress. Also being yellow and not overly bridal means you can wear it for future formal events in future. Personally to me makes more sense to a very bridal dress that you can never wear again.
Until Queen Victoria popularised white weddings (which didn't reach the lower classes until after WWII), having a nice dress you could wear for Sunday best (or even just wearing your Sunday best) is how it was done throughout all of history aside from some royalty :)
@@Harrison_J_T Lots of ladies in the war wore just the uniform of whatever service they were in! The intersections of fashion and social history offer some interesting thoughts for how we live today
Rebecca Hurford yes! and the men wore their military uniform since many got married either before they were deployed or when they had a couple of days off.
I expected more too. It’s underwhelming. And then you add in the price of 1400. And it feels like a ripoff. It looks like an Easter dress you can buy off the rack for 80 dollars.
A lot of vintage dresses have strap keepers - although they’re typically at the apex of the shoulder, and fasten with very small snaps to one side instead of the middle. Too bad the ones on your dress were uncomfortable - I usually never even feel them! Years back I was searching for sleeveless 1950s vintage dresses on Etsy and I came across what was obviously a wedding dress - it was an ivory tulle tea-length confection in very good condition and the measurements fit mine. AND IT WAS $48! So of course I bought the dress. Was I even dating anyone? No. Am I now? No. But I’m keeping that dress by gum because you never know and I for sure would never find a smoking deal like THAT again!!! So yes, I’m the weird spinster with an unworn wedding dress in her closet, and you know what? No regrets.
@@fitzyfitz95 Now when you put it that way I think I saw those when I was younger...and I'm 21. I could have sworn there is a dress I thrifted last year that had those. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what they were.
I am getting married in a week and I feel you so much on everything that you have explained from your journey! My partner doesn´t know this yet, but I bought a cape! I am wearing long puffy sleeves and I decided to go for white because my gran really wanted to see me in white. Can you make a video about the type of wedding you had? I only really know about the traditional white dress, Christian, dad gives daughter away kinda weddings - could you talk us through the decision process behind the different aspects that you chose? 😊
One of my best friends married in august and she decided for a custom dress, too. Hers was a lot more "bridal", but really really beautiful and it fit her perfectly, obviously. She had an open back so the designer/seamstress didn't only put hooks and eyes on the shoulders for the straps but also at the waist to secure the wrap-around bra. The nicest extra, though, was that she gave the surplus fabric to my friend who then handmade the dress for her toddler from those fabric pieces for her christening in the same ceremony. So adorable! In the end it wasn't more expensive than a "normal" wedding dress and the price also included removing and dying the skirt so it can more easily reworn. Now I'm thinking about getting a dress custom made as well - if I ever marry ;)
This dress is Incredible - I know you didn't have a professional photographer on the day, but will you do like a "wedding shoot" with the dress do you think?
Being an amateur seamstress, that price is really good. So many hours! Plus the materials. I love that you appreciate all of that and the expertise. Great video all over. So informative and entertaining and just lovely! 😊
I definitely share your feeling about trying to find specific 50s/A-line tea length wedding dresses. Everything seems to be very long, tight and lace-y lately and for shorter and curvier people that’s much harder to navigate. I loved your wedding dress colours. You and Dan complemented eachother so well!
This is so cool, I’ve always wanted to wear purple and my girlfriend is obsessed with purple as much as me. I can so imagine in our wedding day with us both being in purple. Boho has always been the Avenue I’ve wanted to go down.
My parents wedding and honeymoon combined cost less or about as much as my aunts wedding dress alone. Wedding dresses are crazy. My mother made hers herself which was good because she got pregnant so she was able to adjust the design to allow for her to change size and she was able to get her perfect dress (or near perfect because she had to change the design anyway) for way cheaper. My parents had a medieval themed wedding so their outfits were medieval/medieval inspired and they also made clothes for a lot of the guests. I don't remember who made it (both my parents sew) but my father's clothes were also handmade. My mother and her bridal party were in purple (purple and gold for her) and my father and his whatever the male version of a bridal party is was in blue (blue and silver/grey for him) because they were their favourite colours. It was so untraditional I think my grandma refused to go.
Ahhh I loved this entire video! The process of getting a custom dress was super interesting, and I'm so glad it ended up being in your price range. Sounds like it all came together perfectly... minus the COVID stuff. You looked gorgeous!
I'd love to know how other people at your wedding reacted to the dress, particularly that you chose not to go for a standard white. If I ever get married, that definitely seems like something I would want to do!
I don't know if this helps but I went for a somewhat non traditional dress (it was more traditional than Hannah's but I did just but it in the fancy dress area of Nordstroms rather than enter near any bridal shop) and everyone liked it because it suited my personality (at least that's what they said to my face). I think anyone who cares about you will say "Yup. That makes sense" and call it a day.
When you're not even engaged and you recognise the dress maker's website from, um... research. Welp. I love retro wedding dresses and her website is gorgeous, even though I'm not quite ready to make that step yet! Your dress came out so fabulous and it's great to hear about the actual process :)
I'd seen the shop too but only because I love retro dresses and nice ones that fit are so hard to find. Wasn't looking for a wedding dress but now I feel like I need to consider it. (still nowhere near getting married)
Omg yesss the poppers in the dress straps!! My grandma was a dressmaker and she taught me to do it, now I’ve sewn a bunch of them into my clothes... seriously, all clothes should come with them!!
As a seamstress on my own i’m so glad that you did a whole video about how good, amazing and personal can be costume dresses, i’m so happy (and proud). Congrats! You looked SO AMAZING in this dress 💛💛
I have a different body shape, different disabilities and challenges. I want a blue or maybe periwinkle colour, but I can sew, my aunt helped me sew my own high school grad dress (materials cost $50, my classmates spend around $250 or more), and I'm hoping to get her to help. But I might consult a local designer, or even a friend who works doing costumes for local theatre. I love sewing, and I can make casual clothes, but I struggle with sizing and designs. It really helps to have someone who knows designs and how fabrics work together.
As someone who sews and can build dresses I imagine the fabric cost alone to be around £300-500 depending on fabric type/cost/thickness/quality. Then you need to add on all the hours building the dress itself, designing, pattern drafting and sewing. Will be fun to see how much it costs at the end if Hannah lets us know.
Congratulations, Hannah!! The dress is gorgeous and so unique + fun, I love it! I'm really glad you were able to have a wedding celebration what with covid. One note about the bra poppers - I absolutely agree, having the poppers would make clothes sooo much more convenient. A lot of South Asian formal wear actually has this built in and I always thought they were really useful, though they're placed closer to the shoulder.
The dress is so cool, and the shoes are gorgeous! My mum was a dress maker and so loads of my dresses have the popper thingy for bra straps as she's totally pro those things. Also, I'd like to wear an altered version of my mums dress for my wedding in the future, best thing is it can be altered by my mum herself! So glad you had an amazing wedding in these crazy times.
I didn’t have a white dress either. I had an Ivory and navy tulle one from phase eight. It wasn’t even meant to be a wedding dress I just thought it was lovely. I saw it and was lucky enough to find it on eBay (was meant to be £400, I got it for £90).
My dress was from the January sales in Debenhams! It was dark green and velvet and pretty obviously meant for a Christmas or NYE party, but I loved it and it was like £40, which was good when we had 2 months to plan a wedding and about £300 for the whole thing!
Having bought a traditional wedding dress for our (postponed) church wedding, and having made my own dress for the smaller legal wedding, I can definitely tell you that's a fair price. The amount of work that goes into all the details, working with tricky fabrics, getting the size just right... You look amazing in it!
I'm sooooo happy your wedding dress wasn't white. You looked amazing! Its so important to wear something you love and feel like yourself in on a such a special day x x x
I saw the pictures on insta and couldn’t help but smile. The dress is soooo Hannah. OF COURSE she wanted a yellow tea length dress w red/orange tulle and polka dots and no veil. Beautiful and exuberant and free. So happy for you.
I got a custom dress for my wedding too! It was about the same price in $. What's the deal with "tea length" dresses being harder to find? Wedding dress designers, take note. I was also insistent on having a keyhole back. Then I decided to make mine pink for no reason other than it looked good on me and it was custom! Congrats! Such a beautiful dress and you will cherish the experience.
I've been watching your videos for so many years that when i saw your wedding pics i felt so emotional lol. It's amazing to see someone grow and change and i wish you the happiest marriage!
So excited to watch this 😍 my mum made my wedding dress for me (which worked out well because with delays from covid I was 6 months pregnant!) so I love seeing custom dresses, especially when they aren't your standard white/other shades of white dress 😍 mine was a pink ballgown with butterflies all over it ☺️
Congratulations! I wore yellow when I got married too, my brother had just finished a textile design degree and he made it for me. It was extra special 💛💛💛
I only recently found your channels, but I got married in October 2022 (delayed for two years because of covid) and also had my dress made by The Couture Company! Jo is just amazing, as is her team. 😊
Love your dress- looks gorgeous! I bought my wedding dress unseen based on my measurements from chotronette- it was tea length 50s and had flowers in it and was relatively cheap for a wedding dress- about £350 i believe. Best thing is I can wear it again. It was a bit out there but i wanted to be different. Sometimes i wish i had gone for a long white dress like most other people but husband loved it and says it was very me!
As someone who also has trouble finding stuff that fits and wanted it to be non-white - I wish I could show this video to my last-year-self during the wedding-dress-shopping-stress-period, haha. Personally, I went with a shop on Etsy, as I wanted to be able to see the design first, but also wanted to be able to choose the colours/pattern and have it made to my measurements from start. It's also awesome for anyone on a smaller budget (150-1k €/£/$) as the individual shops usually base the cost on the fabric and actual work, without enormous markups just because it's a wedding dress.
your wedding photos are gorgeous !! idk if its just me being a romantic sop / missing my own boyfriend / just really liking when people are happy, but your photos made me get a lil teary
I am also a petite 5 feet tall, so finding my wedding dress was ROUGH. Everything is sized for such big people! Your dress is GORGEOUS! I love all the details, and the colors are just beautiful. Definitely worth the investment!
I agree, that little popper is such a great invention - I had them in the straps of my wedding dress but I also had one at the back which stopped the back bit of my bra riding up into view, as I had a fairly low backed dress! Absolute genius, and I'm tempted to add them into all my other dresses now...
Just watched the rest of the video and saw your popper update - my poppers were slightly back from the top of my shoulder so I didn't have the issue with them digging in
Aaaahhhhhhhh I love it!! 😍💛 Custom was definitely the way to go. That dress embodies you. And that price tag wasn't bad either. Especially when everything that is marked as being bridal can be expensive as fuck off the rack at a bridal shop 🌻
Your dress cost the same as my dress but my dress is custom fitted of the rack classic dress. And now I'm like damn, did I miss a trick?? But no, I love my dress. I also love your dress. Dresses, wow. Good things.
I used to work at a tailor/custom dress making place. The mock up is called a muslin and is sometimes made out of left over fabric to avoid waste! We also would ask the client to bring in an old bra and sew the bra right into the dress so that is another option for brides! You're dress was beautiful and I'm so happy for you!
I love that you wore something that so fully expressed your personality! I went all traditional wedding many years ago, and now always recommend that people mix it up and add their own individual touches. Who's making the rules anyway? When you were describing your dress, it reminded me of an episode of "Say Yes to the Dress" (US) where an actress picked out a dress for a Broadway play called "Honeymoon in Vegas". It was ivory but otherwise similar with a scoop neck top and tea length floofy skirt!
I bought a dress off the rack at a shop going out of business about 4 years before my actual wedding. The dress was $99. My cousin did the alterations and added a lavender fabric to the skirts. I had a purple wedding dress and it was amazing
such a unique dress ! and I get it about the Needle and Threads dress, everytime I see one on Asos I'm like "I could totally get married in this dress" !
The tradition of white wedding dresses is a relatively recent thing. Most Victorian brides didn't wear white. I didn't get married in white because I didn't want to spend a lot on a dress I'd only wear once, I definitely wasn't virginal and a lot of wedding dresses look like a baked Alaska! I bought an off the peg dress in the sale at Liberty's which cost me £90 (which is the most I've ever spent on a garment). I got a lot of wear out of it too! It was a cornflower blue printed cotton dress and I loved it. It eventually wore out. My bridesmaids were dressed in very pretty sun dresses I bought in BHS and they got a lot of wear out of those too. My parents were divorced pensioners and neither had any money so we paid for everything after saving up, although my mum made and paid for the cake. It was a lovely wedding, everyone had a great time and the whole cost, including the honeymoon, was under £5000.
You've said you guys are gonna have an unconventional wedding and that's totally appreciable, but this custom wedding dress stuff is so romantically classic and traditional. It's the Jane Austen inside of you coming to light! 😁
here is my take on a wedding dress that is custom made. people look at it and think, oh they just made a dress. its not just "oh they made a dress" i have been sewing since i was 6 yrs old, i am now 42. it is more then making a dress. most dont know that the fabric alone for the dress you had made is between (in American prices) 14 to 16 dollars a yard. then the tulle on top for the petty and the over skirt is about 1.25 a yard and it takes between 20 to 30 yards to make a petty alone, the over skirt polka dot fabric was about 12 a yard and it takes about 7 yards to cut on the bias which is how she would of cut it. so with the underskirt being about equal. 7 yards at say bottom rack 14 dollars a yard, times two, is 14 yards at 14 dollars so 196.00, then the tulle is say 30 yards at 1.25 a yard for the fine net, is 37.50. then the design time, i charge about 90 dollars an hour for design time, your appointment i would say was about 4 hours. so that is 360 dollars. then sewing time is about 20 dollars an hour. a petty takes about two days between gathering and sewing so at 20 an hour for 10 hours a day that is 200 a day. The dress patterning would be 20 dollars an hour and that pattern would take about 4 hours to create, (although lets be fair, if she makes them for a living she had a premade pattern she adjusted) but my min charge is 4 hours. that is another 80 dollars in time. sewing the over dress and under dress is about 9 to 10 hours in time. at 20 an hour that is 200. all that is already 1,273.00 and that isnt even including the bias tape, trims, buttons, button covering, thread, etc for the dress. i have made costumes that cost more then that dress. I would say 1400 pounds is a fair and proper deal on that dress. well done and it was adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mum's wedding dress wasn't white and I don't want mine to be white either! It was mid 90s when she got married so not so fashionable anymore but the dress was burgundy and ivory, I've not seen many other dresses like this but I love yours! And the yellow really suits you too 💛

I am a dressmaker and last year I did a wedding dress for a client using elements of her mums dress! it was very sweet!
Imagine Disneybounding in this dress as Belle!
Perfect for a dapper day at Disney land!
THOSE SHOES!! I can't believe you almost didn't share them! They're amazing 😍
I didn’t have a white dress either. I had an Ivory and navy tulle one from phase eight. It wasn’t even meant to be a wedding dress I just thought it was lovely. I saw it and was lucky enough to find it on eBay (was meant to be £400, I got it for £90).
Nice!!
My dress was from the January sales in Debenhams! It was dark green and velvet and pretty obviously meant for a Christmas or NYE party, but I loved it and it was like £40, which was good when we had 2 months to plan a wedding and about £300 for the whole thing!
Stephanie Mecredy love that it sounds gorgeous
Having bought a traditional wedding dress for our (postponed) church wedding, and having made my own dress for the smaller legal wedding, I can definitely tell you that's a fair price. The amount of work that goes into all the details, working with tricky fabrics, getting the size just right... You look amazing in it!
I'm sooooo happy your wedding dress wasn't white. You looked amazing! Its so important to wear something you love and feel like yourself in on a such a special day x x x
We do the popper thing for bras in dresses we make for a lot of the theatre shows I work on. :)
I saw the pictures on insta and couldn’t help but smile. The dress is soooo Hannah. OF COURSE she wanted a yellow tea length dress w red/orange tulle and polka dots and no veil. Beautiful and exuberant and free. So happy for you.
the excitement in this video is so adorable, I love everything about this 🥺🥺
My Grandma made my twins and a cousin’s dress. So Special!
SO BEAUTIFUL and fun and whimsical it really is like /your/ dress. Like every elememt screams Hannah Witton and that's wonderful
LOVE Chotronette! That’s where I’d love to get my wedding dress too. I bet you looked gorgeous
Your wedding dress was really lovely! I’m not normally into weddings or anything, but here I am watching the video anyway 😂
I am also a petite 5 feet tall, so finding my wedding dress was ROUGH. Everything is sized for such big people! Your dress is GORGEOUS! I love all the details, and the colors are just beautiful. Definitely worth the investment!
"Is that a 28 year old bride or...an 8 year old child?" 😂😍
I mean it’s your day boo! You can spend your earned money however you want to! 🤍
Oh wow that’s cool! Hadn’t thought of that!
The dress in your first fitting is called a Muslin! And oh goodness this is beautiful!!!
I bought a dress off the rack at a shop going out of business about 4 years before my actual wedding. The dress was $99. My cousin did the alterations and added a lavender fabric to the skirts. I had a purple wedding dress and it was amazing
LOVE LOVE LOVE the dress and hearing all about your thought process. Also the buttons detail are to die for!
such a unique dress ! and I get it about the Needle and Threads dress, everytime I see one on Asos I'm like "I could totally get married in this dress" !
I literally cried watching this video, you two are the cutest!
Congratulations Hannah! Your dress is so beautiful!! You and your partner look gorgeous!!! So happy for you ☺️❤️
The tradition of white wedding dresses is a relatively recent thing.
Hannah looks so radiant and classy today I’m 🥺
My mum's wedding dress wasn't white and I don't want mine to be white either! It was mid 90s when she got married so not so fashionable anymore but the dress was burgundy and ivory, I've not seen many other dresses like this but I love yours! And the yellow really suits you too 💛
Omg you looked STUNNING! I'm so so happy for you!
That dress is god tier.
I LOVE it!! The colour, the shape, the story, the JOY ON YOUR FACE!!! Best video ever 💕
It's so beautiful! I just picked out my dress a few weeks ago and this makes me so excited to wear it next year!
Love it! Perfect balance of non-traditional but still bridal. I totally share your aversion to white, I want blue for my wedding dress.
fellow covid bride! i had my dress from needle and thread i bought it 3 weeks before my wedding day lol! i'll wear it forever i also didnt want white! congratulations to you both xxxx
SUCH A STUNNING DRESS. Also, as a fellow ostomy person I appreciated the wedding poo update! Huge congratulations to you both 💖
Does this video make the dress tax deductible?
If anybody else is worried about using the toilet in their wedding dress, there’s this thing called the Bridal Buddy undergarment slip that holds up your skirts for you
I'm a wedding photographer - and that shiny face is definitely one of Jo's brides! I love it when people get a coutoure company dress -they're all so matched to their personality! Amazing choice - you look incredible in it!
Meant shiny HAPPY face lol! haha
PS my sister in law had a CC dress and was running late for her wedding - her mum was trying to do up the buttons as she was running into the ceremony!
I love yellow too and I’m sooo happy for you
This was so wholesome & I'm so happy you got what you wanted. I got married earlier this year in purple ;) so I am a fan of the alternative coloured dress. I was lucky to have something cheap (
My cousin had a custom-made royal blue dress for her wedding it was stunning! Beginning to wonder why anyone would do anything else! congrats!
I want a similar thing for my wedding and am also thinking about custom made since my friend's auntie is a dressmaker :)
What a gorgeous dress! And I’m sure you’ll get some use out of it, very you. I’ve been waiting for this video & I can honestly say that yours is one of the very few wedding dresses I’ve see that I actually personally like. Congrats to you and Dan! You look so sweet together 😍
Soooooo pretty love how you managed to get everything you wanted so perfectly!
Such a gorgeous dress! I've had my wedding dress custom made in Lithuania, I bought it on Etsy for just over £800 which I thought was a bargain! It's dusty blue and my fiancé is going to FREAK out when he sees it. Enjoy married life! x
OMG IT SPINS PERFECTLY!
i found my wedding dress in a vintage shop for £10 :)
That's so cool! I love how much of your personaility you managed to get into your dress. Conratulations on your wedding!
Also, your ring looks a lot like my wedding ring - 3 stone setting with white, green, white. It's vintage from the 70s or 80s, so that's cool!
Oh cool! Yeah my engagement ring is an heirloom from my Granny I’ve had for 10 years but the wedding band is just plain gold but they go nice together!
I want a yellow dress too 😭😭😭 but we’re going for a cheap wedding and the dress I’m in love with is $5K.
those shoes are FABULOUS
I'm so happy you could get such a wonderful dress and just the way you wanted it. I did an express wedding so I took very little time to look for a dress. And I also bought it thinking I could wear it again to an event or something but it doesn't fit me anymore and it's kinda sad just seeing sitting there at the back of my closet...
This video was exactly what I wanted. So gorgeous, so much detail, yasss! You looked absolutely amazing!! Congratulations!!
Literally never clicked so fast in a video! The dress was so beautiful😍
Your dress is beautiful and so unique! I’m glad you got to wear the dress of your dreams ☺️. Congratulations on your wedding!
