  • Pockets hold a fascinating history, and if you dig down deeply enough, you may discover how, over the course of centuries, the humble pocket has carried the secrets and desires of men (and, eventually, women). Correspondent Faith Salie looks at how this fashionable clothing component continues to evolve.

I feel so validated by this story! Thank you so much CBS, I’ve been feeling this way my whole life. I hate carrying a bag and so wish more women’s clothes had real, functional pockets. I still remember the deep feeling of gratitude I got with the first dress I tried on with pockets in it.

Thinking back women's scrubs besides being too short for my 36 in inseam, had goofy pockets that never accommodated ET tubes and surfactant when moving fast and bandage scissors could wedge into the bottom making them a fight to get out.

Warrior or nobleman, Hands in pockets is the ultimate statement of authority and power, signaling that the individual had such control over the situation that he could take the stance of possibly holding a concealed weapon in his pocketed hand ( dagger or pistol) and no one around him could challenge that. There is a reason why soldiers and police alike take down suspects with hands out of your pockets!

It was many years ago at a science fiction convention, one writer (can't remember who) told of the time he and his wife were caught in the rain. When they got home, they changed into dry clothes, and he put on a pair of his wife's trousers. He was surprised to discover how shallow the pockets were. It was as if they were living in 2 separate worlds.

Shallow jeans pockets infuriate me! I had to resort to using the purselett "coin purse/ID, zipper pouch", you women know- that added accessory that comes with some leather purses that snap onto a loop inside your purse, - as my wallet and using the spring snap, I end up clipping to my pants belt loop to keep it from falling out of those shallow pockets when I sit down! Many times I'm not bothered to carry a purse preferring to have only the essential ID, a credit/ debit card, a little cash in a zippered card carrier and can't find pockets in pants, jeans or even a outerwear jacket that will hold such a small wallet without falling out. In buying coats, jackets, lightweight or heavier winter I look for at least one zippered pocket or "cellphone pocket" with zipper that keeps shallow pockets from spilling their contents and as added security from theft for wallets that end up half sticking out!

This is why I love cargo-type pants. All broken out in pockets, some of them large enough to carry a lunchbox.
When I was in my teens and twenties, the (male-dominated) medical community was all up in arms over the epidemic of scoliosis in girls and young women. Nobody knew what caused it.
I can tell you what caused it. When I entered second grade, I was given a purse (handbag) with a shoulder strap. Which I carried on my right shoulder throughout my developmental years. Imagine, carrying a bag full of crap dragging down one shoulder for all the time your bones are growing.
I flunked a scoliosis screening at the age of 14. The only help I got was being told "you need to learn to stand up straight."
50 years later, I've had a lifetime of pain and problems because my spine is curved and rotated, and my right shoulder is lower than the left.
    NO MORE PURSES!
MORE AND BETTER POCKETS FOR WOMEN!!!!

This is a great segment and it reminds me of a film clip song on Sesame Street; a woman singing a song about the importance of Pockets with a film of different types of pockets and women doing different things with them.. I had a school teacher in middle school or high school and she said she wouldn't have any blazer jacket, pants, skirt or dress if it had faux pockets, shallow pockets, or didn't have pockets including her night dress or pajamas. All of her clothes had really deep pockets, she always wore long sleeve tops, had short hair, wore a big watch with a thick black leather or silicone strap and she always had her hands in her pockets when she was walking around or standing talking to someone or looking around. She didn't carry a handbag 👜. Her keys and her wallet were always in her pockets as well as other things including her sunglasses and a pair of black leather gloves. It wasn't unusual for her to take her gloves out of her pocket and put them on when it was the end of the school day. She always wore her gloves when driving her car and I seen her at a store and she had them on. I stayed after school with her once and she put them on. When she took something out of her pocket or put something in her pocket she'd sometimes sing,"There are pockets that are magic." Once she said,"I'll put my hands in my pockets. That's what they're for. I'm a pocket girl and I love my pockets." I actually liked looking at her when she was putting her hands in her pockets and when she had her hands in her pockets. One day when she and I were standing talking she noticed that I was looking at her hands in her pockets and she said,"What are you looking at? Oh cause my hands are in my pockets?" I said yes and she noticed that I was wearing corduroy pull on pants with elastic waist and two side pockets. My hands were at my sides. She said,"Now you put your hands in your pockets. That's what they're for." So of course I did and while I was putting my hands in my pockets she sang,"What would we do without pockets? Pockets are perfectly fine." She sang that sometimes when she put her hands in her pockets. Obviously she has seen that film clip song Pockets on Sesame Street. After I put my hands in my pockets she said to me,"Sometimes you need a place to put your hands in. Just think what do I do with my hands? I put them in my pockets. It feels comfortable and secure when you have your hands in your pockets."

This is a ridiculous and unacceptable state of affairs. Women's clothing should have some damn useable pockets! Not those sewn shut faux pockets, or the tiny, pitiful-excuse-for-a-pocket things much of the clothing has. And men should be able to carry a bag around without getting strange looks, too! It's just a way to carry around the million and one gadgets we have to keep with us these days. I won't buy a garment that doesn't have plenty of useful pockets (obviously, they aren't all created equal), but I'm a spoiled man. It always makes me mad when my girlfriend's clothing has tiny, useless pockets because I end up carrying all her stuff if I'm around, or she just loses things all the time when she tries to use her's.

Seriously? If you "need" pockets to feel valued and powerful, you're not really valuable and powerful. Those qualities come from within.

I promise.. this vileness of men about any and everything is tiring. Can’t even be proud to be a man cause that’s to much for women.. even when talking about a pocket. A man is always at fault smh.

I’ve see probably a dozen articles, videos, and podcasts that talk about pocket disparate, but not one of them makes any attempt to explain why, beyond a the undocumented claim of misogynistic oppression. I want someone to find some kind of documentation explaining why someone is putting smaller pockets on women’s clothing. Talk to modern fashion designers and ask them why they don’t put pockets on women’s clothing, despite an apparent demand.
You talk about a hundred years of concern around this issue. A hundred years that have seen the enormous revolutions in women’s fashion, to the point where in many US cities it’s now acceptable for a woman to walk down the street wearing anything from men’s white tie tuxedo and tails, to literally nothing more than a G-string thong and a smile. But the one aspect of oppression the patriarchy is holding onto is the relevant size of pockets?
Do your job as a reporter and discover the documentable reasons pockets are smaller on women’s clothing, not just the baseless assumptions you’ve been told by activists.
For Christ sake, you have to at least explain why women who MADE THEIR OWN CLOTHING weren’t putting in pockets!?!

Jeez. This video wasn't a dissertation on pockets in women's clothing--it was a CBS "Sunday Morning" human interest bit. Do your own in-depth research, if pockets interest you that much..

Little or no pockets creates a sleek and slim line with no bumpy interruptions. Women like to look sleek. Its fashionable to look sleek. Hence, no pockets. Big back pockets on women's jeans can deform their butts so they look flat, not round. Vanity...

Supreme leader job killer joebiden is tanking the stock market. I don't want to loose my 401k. Why is joebiden taking the hedge fund side instead of the little guy from Scranton? Ask Jen. She shouldn't need to circle back around on that question.
