When my diabetes was out of control (I didn’t realize I was diabetic, my first blood sugar test at my doctors revealed an astonishing 657 blood sugar level!!!) my taste changed. I actually couldn’t taste much of anything! What I could taste was usually bitter or had a burned taste to it. Now that my diabetes is completely under control, it’s even worse! I use a very minimal amount of salt in my food and everything tastes like I poured a whole container of salt in it! I am also extremely sensitive to is if I eat something with sugar or artificial sugar in it!!! I cannot stand the sweetness or the burning. My journey started 1 1/2 yrs ago! I have a lot of health issues, but this by far has been the toughest!!! I was a big carb eater, I don’t like meat and have had to find other ways to take in protein. Thank goodness I was not a sweet eater and food was not important to me other than to keep me sustained. I walked out of my doctor’s office on fast and slow acting insulin but we did a complete turnaround! We limit our carbs to no more than 15g a day and you will not find 1 grain of sugar in our house. We no longer eat processed foods or go out to eat hardly at all. I’m so happy to say my diabetes is now very under control! My biggest problem now is I’ve become hypoglycemic again, I struggled with it as a young adult. I realize I’ve formed a mental block about having my sugar go above 85-90. I’m slowly working through that, I know it’s just as dangerous! I love your videos, you give us such wonderful information. Information we need but only we can implement to save our health and our lives! I know I’m going to die one day, but it won’t be because I’m hard headed like my mother who died after ending up on dialysis 3 times a week because no one was going to tell her how to eat!!! Thank you for the information you bring us! I truly appreciate you very much!
you wrote: " I realize I’ve formed a mental block about having my sugar go above 85-90" Can you explain what you mean? How tightly are you able to control your glucose? (i.e. what's the range?)
Very helpful and good information. I'm a Type 11 and have an appointment for cleaning and x-rays in a few weeks so the timing is right. I noticed that my tongue is a little white. My most recent A1 c was 6.1 and I have been using the Atkin's Diet for a year. Lately I have been looking into the Ketogenic Diet to improve my health more and try to reverse the diabetes that is a big annoyance in my life.
When I was 10 months old, and was adopted from Greece, my parents were told that I had a geographical tongue. In the orphanage, they thought I was crying from that, I was crying cause I was hungry. My mom took care of that promptly! 😆 lol. Thanks for this video! Very informative Dr. Ergin! Your the best!❤
My doc has never asked about any of these and I have most of them. She brushes off every symptoms as it doesn't matter except the glucose readings. I need a better doctor.
Times used to be very Challenging, i had the Worst days of my life living with Diabetes, I Appreciate you so much Dr igho You have Restored me my life that was lost already.
Interesting and very useful. I am very fortunate not to have any of these symptoms and have always been conscientious about oral hygiene. It is useful to know about these sorts of problems and warning signs because one might not necessarily associate them with diabetes. Better to prevent damage where possible, than to attempt to reverse it later. Thanks again!
Thank you for this, my mouth is very sore. I have cuts inside cheeks, inside lips, where they touch my teeth. My dentist gave me dry mouth tooth paste and did a visual cancer check. My Dr says my B12 is low, can cause mouth problems, I wonder how long my B12 has been low.. I can’t enough saliva to do a Covid test!
Thank you so much to the ever good-looking doctor, Dr. Ahmet! Now I'm aware about the whitish coating on my tongue, plus the gum recession, and not being able to taste the food well as compared to before.
I’m a diabetic doctor and I often have dry mouth so I chew sugar free gum all the time. But I also have once in a while a bitter taste in my mouth. Also my tongue burns when I eat spicy or acidic foods. Went to dentist and he didn’t find anything with my tongue.

I really been lucky with diabetic problems I guess going on 30 years now living with diabetes. Well never had any usually problems.i say that cause I feal ok but I did have a heart attack.and open heart surgery ab 6 years ago. But didn't feal bad then really .I kn that sounds crazy.but I was up and working my job ab 3 months post surgery felt ok IAM thankful I don't experience any problems like other people deal with.thank you lord.
Thanks for the info Doc. I’ve a light coat of white tongue (only in the deeper end) and slight taste of sour (not salty like your video)….similar thing?
@MerlindaGagani-bd9jq, any mouthwash labeled as "for dry mouth" or "for diabetics" should work. For sugarless gums and candies, look for ones with xylitol. Stay healthy!
Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like you might be experiencing a sensation of sweetness in your throat after consuming sugary foods, which could be related to how your body processes sugar. This might indicate issues such as acid reflux, where sugary foods can exacerbate symptoms, or it could be related to fluctuating blood sugar levels, especially in people with diabetes or prediabetes. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional to discuss your symptoms. They can provide a more accurate diagnosis and offer advice on how to manage it effectively. The use of hot alcohol to alleviate symptoms is unusual, so it's definitely worth discussing with your doctor to ensure you're on a safe and effective treatment plan. Take care! 😊
@simonbrett40, a saliva sample can indeed provide information about various health issues but it may not give a complete picture. It's always best to consult with your GP about your symptoms.
brush your tongue two to three times until the white is gone. gargle with ginger water. this works for me. drink ginger water as well half hour after meals. stay away from excess sugar. eat lots of karela or bitter melon. it contains natural insulin. brush your teeth before you go to sleep. always.
