  • Marc Power is back with a very special edition of Games O'Canada. This time around he talks about Lingo. While many people know of the GSN version, he talks about the original 1986-87 syndicated version, along with the localized 1998-2001 French Speaking version the country had. How do both shows stack up? Tune in and find out!

    Thanks for posting this! I loved the Quebec version of Lingo, especially when a contestant pulled black ball and Paul and the audience would shout out "UNE INFAME BOULE NOIRE!"

    • @BlaqC

      Which, to anglophone viewers, translates to "a dastardly black ball!"

    At the time, Dusty Martell was a local radio personality on Vancouver's CFMI, and was briefly married to Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini, with whom she had a child...she now works as an au pair, and her full resumé can be found at: www.vancouverbroadcasters.com/M.html

    How would removing the cap of 3 appearances make the money issues worse?
    It's not like they got to play for 128 grand.

      @marcpower4167 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because unlike before, where you played for $16K the first time, $32K the 2nd time and $64K the 3rd the time. Potentially you could play for $64K each time. Plus, a really good team could do serious damage with no limit. Whereas as a producer you could cut your losses if they stopped at 3 wins.

    One thing I think the 1987 Lingo should have done is to have the bonus score tote board (for the No Lingo bonus round, where you lost if you got a Lingo) to say "BUST" if you got a Lingo; that would really have driven the point home, IMO.

    No mention of Quebec Lingo is complete without pointing out this legendary clip, where the team's first three guesses translate to "v@gin@", "vulv@" and "furry". One team member went on to be part of a popular standup duo. th-cam.com/video/67WIFAOB0fI/w-d-xo.html

    Le Cercle didn’t only last one season. It went on for 7 seasons and a total of 1094 episodes from 2005 to 2011

    I REMEMBER WATCHING LINGO. The version i honestly watched is with Bill Engvall :)

      I saw the version with Chuck Woolery first and then the Engvall version. I never saw an episode of this version until after I watched this video but it was definitely interesting to see for sure

      @@grigorb.5221 But, now, actually... I think Bill's Lingo is actually pretty decent. I did like the $100,000 grand prize. But, I won't bash you if you said you don't like Bill's version.

      The Canadian version was the first one I ever saw. I was glad that GSN was able to pick it up with Chuck Woolery. That was the version I always remembered.

      The one Chuck Woolery had was tolerable as for Bill Engvall's Lingo UNACCEPTABLE!!!

    • @marcpower4167
      @marcpower4167 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only problem with the Chuck Woolery era bonus round was that it was too easy. You only needed 6 draws to pretty much guarantee the $5K (although I realize one team lost on 6). It was fine during the first season when the computer moved at normal speed and it was a bit tough to get more than 4 words. but when they sped it up and added the bonus letters by the 2nd season it was too easy.

      Glad you liked it. I thought Envall's Lingo was dumbed-down and encouraged raunchy answers.

    I'll say this for Ralph Andrews: Aside from Yahtzee he actually had a pretty good run of game shows in America (You Don't Say!, I'll Bet/It's Your Bet, Liar's Club, It Takes Two, 50 Grand Slam, Celebrity Sweepstakes, Lingo.) At least his production company had less epic disasters than Heatter-Quigley (The Amateur's Guide to Love, Hot Seat, The Magnificent Marble Machine and Bedtime Stories were absolutely horrendous H-Q game shows that made it out of the pilot phase.)

    • @marcpower4167
      @marcpower4167 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      absolutely, He had a lot of great shows in his career and really many of his shows were underrated, His career didn't end well though, his last shows didn't fare well at all.

    BTW i had to ask and i hope they do a wednesday Vlog on this But is the online word game "Wordly" is a ripoff on the main five letter word porton of lingo (not the bingo porton) ?

    • @GameShowGumbo
      @GameShowGumbo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I love Wordle. Sure it's a lingo knock off, but more people know more about Wordle than Lingo now. Plus, Wednesday's Vlog is already planned out.

    • @marcpower4167
      @marcpower4167 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as Wordle doesn't become a TV show....I think they'll pretty much get away with ripping it off.

  • @mrsejanoz523
    @mrsejanoz523 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    No wonder neither version of the game lasted - the whole concept is, as the French say, merde.

    • @chops1976
      @chops1976 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fun fact: the word "merde" was actually used on an episode of the R-C version. The team that had that word didn't guess it, probably because they didn't expect it to be a valid word. Tabarnak!
