I learned to do this a couple months ago when I got my M4, it definitely helps with the frustration of being behind slow vehicles on single lane roads.

when i first got my license, i was pretty irresponsible about my "spirited" (reckless) driving. i would push way too hard in terrible places, especially for someone who didnt know what they were doing. the longer i drive the more i enjoy _not_ driving dangerously. i still have my fun, but the exact way this video suggests. its not as exciting as it used to be, but overall its still more fun somehow. im not getting an adrenaline rush but its a different kind of fun. also not nearly as worried about going to jail or getting killed anymore

When i was actively driving, i always tried to be as little of a nuissance as possible. As in: don't endanger others. I found myself really quickly in positions where there is no one around on an empty country road, and i thought to myself.. i would not endager someone, so i drove a bit more... on my limits.
I noticed that this was the way to go, because i got to have fun without any moral issues :)

To add to the tip about slowing down if there are slow drivers in front, sometimes I look for a pull off and just watch traffic for a bit. When there is a nice gap, I'll take off and enjoy the empty roads
I live in the Rocky Mountains and it's a blessing cuz there's so many empty country mountain roads w/ amazing curves and elevation changes. Any petrolhead try to book a trip out here to the rockies it's amazing!!!!

I think it would be great to raise a bit of awareness how night can affect your driving and perception. Although driving alone in the night is super cool and climatic, it seems that some petrolheads forget that you need to be bit more careful.

Just got my driver's license and been driving around my country (Slovenia if you're curious) for almost a year now and I have to say your channel is easily my favorite. It's kept relatively succinct and with you actually demonstrating your skill/knowledge of what it is that you talk about - a combination that is rare and in short supply nowadays. And your overall convictions and attitude on what makes for actually fun driving are incredibly in-line with what I've come to think about it myself.
To answer to your reply here I, too, could use a few pointers on night time driving. In particular:
1.) How to adjust your speed appropriately to danger signs regards to wildlife crossing the road - super important during the night, when most animals move!
2.) How does the limited visibility (even with appropriate headlights) affect your reaction times and how to adjust your speed/handling of the car appropriately.
3.) What effect does that limited visibility have when you add to it even more adverse conditions, like rain or snow/ice. On the one hand, adverse conditions make you go slower by default out of caution...but on the other hand you still have limited visibility because you're driving at night and having to mind heavy rainfall/snow on your windshield and rear window as your wipers struggle to keep up.

well awareness on what NOT to do would be great since people do all kinds of bs at night here, for example some idiots were stopped drag racing on a 2 lane highway and a driver just slammed into them since he thought they were moving @@MickDrivesCars

OK, this is the kind of spirited driving I do. When there is space and time for it, ride so it requires some attention, but far from dangerous.
I love small radius turns in my MX-5. Coming to empty roundabout, heel and toe to second gear and feel the suspension work, the centrifugal force, then accelerate out of it.
And of course the winding mountain roads.

Once you master this type of driving, you will realize that you are able to drive faster, enjoy your car while also almost never putting yourself and other at risk. Some people who think of themselves as racing drivers on the street think that they should change lanes aggressively, brake hard, tailgate and etc. But with this "spirited driving" you can be smooth, no hard braking, no risk situation, and still beat the google maps time by 20 minutes, and most importantly: with safety
more enthusiasts need to think like you!

Great content! The whole thing of "you paid for the car, might as well enjoy it" is one of the reasons why I recently bought myself a Corsa OPC. Not so I can drive fast where ever I go, but drive fast whenever I feel like it in the terms of the road laid infront me. Especially for a racetrack for example.
Great video. I could not agree more with the "With great power comes great responsibility" mindset. Cars these days have so much more power than they used to have. 300bhp is the new 200bhp if you ask me! However the demands of spirited driving 200bhp compared to 300bhp can be massive. Especially if it's rear wheel drive. Managing the power is one thing but you also need to think so much further ahead. Those corners and potential hazards come up quickly if you are not paying attention!

Tbf, when people say it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.. the two aren't even in the same ballpark in terms of enjoyability. I'm pretty sure the only practical benefit of much power is easy overtaking.

Totally agree. Just got back into cars and driving again cuz my commuter got totaled and now I’m in a sport coupe and couldn’t be more happier. It’s not the fastest car but it’s no slouch. Ive got some lovely country roads by me to enjoy and i treat it like how i treat my kickboxing sparring, keep it playful and light, keep it 75% and under.

Less powerful engines with turbos are really fun to spirit drive in!
Not only do you get a feeling of the turbo kicking in you also get to hear the turbo go shhhhh pshhhewww When you accelerate then back off the gas (Depending on the car of course)

Definitely agree about driving a slow car fast. I previously owned a ND MX-5 and could rev it out and take corners "fast" without blowing past the speed limit. Now having a G42 M240i I can't really push the car without ending up 20 or more over the limit. Its a fantastic car and has more everyday practicality than the MX-5 but that Mazda was a lot of fun.

Great video. Completely agree with what you've said. Also very much agree with your last point too. My daily is also a 300 hp car, and you have to be very selective of where you want to open it up. Where as my 150hp Honda Stepwgn minivan with a 7 speed cvt and paddle shifters is sometimes more fun and engaging to drive because you get to open it up and play with the gearbox more often. I call them 10/10ths cars, because you can often give it 10/10ths in an every day commute, and have a blast doing so 😎👍

Regarding risk vs reward part, i'd rather put it this way: harsher consequences need to be met with higher care/anticipation/awareness/however you call it.
Risk implies a lack of knowledge to determine the outcome. Risk ends where calculation begins.

This is the exact same sort of mindset a good motorcyclist should have as well. You have to think of yourself as kind of an ambassador for motorcyclists (or for cars, for your model of car). If someone sees me on a bike riding respectfully, they're mote likely to treat other motorcyclists with the same respect. Being a road user means not interfering with others as much as possible.
Wow Thats actually how i drive and i always thought thats just me. Only speeding where its not too dangerous or overtaking in a way that no other cars have to move or brake because of you and...

Great video and great points. I love to drive fast and hear my exhaust scream, but there's a time and a place. Pisses me off when I see people traveling at super high speeds through residential areas, participating in takeover bullshit, and putting other people's lives at risk for their own entertainment by cutting up heavy traffic. It makes us all look bad even though it's only a small portion of the car community doing it.

What i do is set my alarm for 3am sat/sun morning, gives me time to wake up a bit, have something to eat and I always check local pages and maps for speed camera zones.
Something I avoid doing in day light situations is not racing down streets where there are other streets joining in because we as people only give a quick look left and right before pulling into a road.
It's so much safer doing this at night for the sole reason of being able to spot headlights before cars come around corners, better in the back country because everyone is using their hi-beams
And don't run from police for fuck sakes, and make sure you have your eyes on your rear view, i drive a sporty car and the amount of times police have gone over the limit to tail me even if i'm going the speed limit is nuts.
and make sure your intention is to leave other drivers thinking that your driving is safe and impressive, not reckless and kiiinda cool looking because you burnt through your soft tires launching at the lights

My only criticism is that a lot of this is suited to UK driving. Here in America we have bigger roads and more lanes so going faster here is not the same as over there.
Agreed Goodyear Eagle F1 are excellent, but I think topped on 19's by the PS4S's which are superb (particularly when spirited driving is appropriate)
4S are a different category of tire tbh - half trackday/half road, with much worse wear as a compromise for more grip.
The Asymm 6 I've got would be comparable to the PS5 and tire reviews seems to suggest the goodyears are faster/sportier.

How do you feel about radar detectors? Do u use one?
If you're more of a night owl and waking up at 5am isn't an option, driving anywhere after 1am is also usually good, just make sure you know the road since potholes and hazards are much harder to see, also make sure you're awake and capable of driving, and put those full brights on as long as there is no one in front of you
Yeah I've done a few of those, but getting up at sunrise so you have light + the road for yourself is by far the best.
I'm pretty good... but getting friends out that early is a NIGHTMARE

Hey Mick, what's your opinion on driving with front tinted windows/windshield, does it make it less safe to drive at night ?
I see this a lot and I don't get the appeal. I've driven cars with it and there's not really any difference visibility wise - just looks tacky (in my opinion)

I got 70% ceramic windshield tint, lightest you can get unless you get the blue shade which allows for 80%. Daytime you couldn't tell it was there unless side windows were down. Night driving was slightly harder but fine, same with rain. But driving at night WITH rain- absolute nightmare. I have above 20/20 vision and could barely see a few car lengths in front of me. Fortunately the installer did a terrible job so I had it removed and was able to get a refund due to the poor work- I would have pulled that shit off anyway even if I didn't get anything back. I've always had 15% ceramic on the sides and continue to do that
Spirited driving is weaving in and out of traffic (responsibly) just to feel the push back of the torque. It helps if you have a car that still pulls hard in its final gears. Also a loud af exhaust. Going from 0-speed limit+5/10 makes me nut
I would say im guilty of breaking some of these rules. Drifting corners only to see a driver in the other lane. Luckily I control my shit but this video made me think a little more

What you say about less power being better was interesting. I've been deciding between a Focus ST track pack or an m240i but I was leaning towards the BMW because I want a sub 5 second 0-60. The Focus isn't much faster than my 420d in a straight line so do you think I'd get much enjoyment from the Focus, or do I need to get something that's considerably quick?
Me personally, I don’t think you “Need” any kind of car for spirited driving. It’s entirely up to you, if you want to go fast with a faster car then the bmw is for you, if you rather like the feeling of earning your speed id say the focus is more your style.
Love my M240i. Think if it had any significant power beyond what it does (450hp with stage 1 tune) it would be a bit much to daily drive on the street. Plenty to have fun with in a straight line but I'm also able to push the car at times without being very unsafe. Great around corners with some lowering springs and Pilot Sport 4s. For cornering you really don't need big power so if straight line speed is important to you, M240 is a better choice, but if you're mainly looking to enjoy some curvy roads and don't necessarily want to go crazy fast, either one could be a lot of fun. I have a lot of wide open straight highways in my area but also a decent number of fun twisty roads. I find the M240 to be a lot of fun on both. Not as laser focused as something like a Boxster and not fast like a M5 comp, rather a nice balance of driving characteristics that make it easy to enjoy in almost all scenarios. The right car depends 100% on how you use it, that's why there's such a wide variety :)

Hey I’m a new driver I need advice on the gas pedal, everything I stop and I am wanting to turn left or right I press the gas pedal to hard or to soft. I even tried pressing it a little and holding it at pressure while turning and I still went wide. My question is how do u press your gas pedal when u make sharp turns or you’re on a regular street?
I honestly can't quite visualise what you're saying - if you're going wide in normal driving it's your steering that's off, not the throttle.
All of this will improve with more time in the seat mate, just get out there and drive.

My first car was a Corsa B 1.2 16v with 67bhp, I could still have fun in it though! Got a BMW M235 Gran Coupe now with 306bhp and X-drive and it can be frustrating because the car wants to go but there is traffic...

Most innapropriate 'spirited' driving in cities, seems to be done by Tesla owners, or TOWIE type duck lipped fake titty women in M and SQ SUV's.
I drive way slower than most 90% of the time, but I go out on a Sunday morning very early, on country roads, and really enjoy my M2.
Hi Mick! My car's auto manual transmission doesn't have pedals as yours. How can I use +M- smoothly & intellegently?
I'm guessing you have a slightly older car. Honestly those gearboxes aren't very responsive and it's best to just let them do their own thing. You can watch my ''how to use manual mode'' video but just bear in mind all those responses will be delayed/may annoy.
It's a Kia Picanto 1.0 "2" automatic manufactured in 2023. The gearbox is R, N, D, +M-. There is no "P"!
It's different from my previous car "Ford Fiesta automatic 2013".

I love some of your content but some other times it feels like there is no account for other people's errors or stupidity..
I realised I've been doing this unconciously. And also know why I think the way some of my friends drive is problematic: They don't care for the safety and wellbeing of others. Driving downtown at 11pm on a weekday while revving the engine, unsafe overtaking in rain with oncoming traffic, taking corners too fast without seeing into the corner. No wonder the insurance for young people is so expensive, my friends are literally begging for accidents. I think it's even worse in Germany because of the Autobahn, where there is no speed limit, so people apply it on narrow country roads filled with potholes and trees nearby too.
But I am glad to know that one more person doing car content isn't as stupid as to risk the life of others just for some views and adrenaline.

Light drizzles can also be quite nice for spirited driving, it keeps most cyclists and motorcycles off the twisties. Just make sure you have a good set of tires and take the reduced grip into account.
