My team pivoted a good number of our RC qualified players on this deck, Michael included. We were super impressed with Mockingbird as copy 5-8 for any card in the matchup. It was an awesome run for him. Another member got top 64 with the list as well.
Jim : watches opponent get screwed by their own misplay and talks about it Also Jim : makes the same misplay of not setting a stop that he has experienced numerous times before
I think Arena leaves a beginning of combat (or whatever the relevant phase is) the turn the card enters, but after that turn you have to set it yourself
There was a MTGO Challenge list (9th place I think?) that swapped the Brutal Cathars for Reflector Mage, and I am excited to try it out as a former Humans enjoyer. Cathar is great as a way to push through... but it is so often just lights out your opponent gets a chance to kill it and untap with their creature again. Reflector Mage solves that, and if we're playing 4x Bird anyway...
"Phoenix did well, nothing amazing" The story of Phoenix and why Cruise is unlikely to see a ban. The only deck it sees play in is a perennial also-ran. A perennial possible best deck but it always comes down to being an also-ran.
Brutal cathar is just exceptional. Reflector mags is also quite good, and some people run it, but it’s still unclear if it’s better than either get lost or cathar in your removal slot. If anything, I would say get lost would be my first cut if I wanted reflector mages to get in there, since the tribal synergy/mass of creatures are important even for your removal suite.
Phoenix is just the right power level for Pioneer. WotC would need to ban waves of Black cards before Phoenix surpasses the shear weight of decades of Black being heavily pushed.
Agreed. I think the tournament results back this up more than anything but Phoenix is definitely not format warping enough to ban by any means. Ofc I'm playing devil's advocate because it's my favorite deck but it really doesn't feel like it needs to be banned, especially since it's the ONLY deck using cruise right now that I know of

That RC was so unbelievably good. The format feels almost wide open, skill-testing, and just generally fun. Plus I got my first PT qualification!
Congrats!

Surprised to see humans without reflector mage in blue.
