Love American Style OST - Love, American Style (Theme)

  • Love American Style, OST - Main theme
I noticed TH-cam was sorely lacking the instrumental tracks from the rare OST to Love American Style, and Charles Fox is a big musical influence so I decided to share these beautiful songs for those who seek them. I really only own this album for Mr. Fox's instrumental side but if anyone is interested in the rest of it I can upload that as well.
Ripped from vinyl, rare and out of print. No copyright infringement intended, just wanted this music to be heard. I will gladly remove if requested. Thanks for listening!

We did this in mid 1969 as I was one of the backing singers we did this at the 20th century fox studios and was Mic'd with AKG C212A Mics and Neumann's. We also did work for Wes Farrell and flew to Dallas on occasion to do Jingles at the old PAMS for radio stations. AFTRA paid pretty well

I actually collect some of those old PAMS jingles and things like this, so I've likely heard your voice many, many times. :) I love insight and stories like this, thanks again for stopping in to share, please do any time!

The show's theme was always a favorite with me, but when I heard this on a Saturday afternoon on WFRO-AM Fremont, OH (long gone, I'm afraid, when Disney got it knocked off the air to make way for its Flint, MI 910 AM station), it was sheer serendipity. And I never ever heard it again until all these years later I find it again on TH-cam. Ah, the memories...

I am, and I did. Friday nights on ABC, long before the TGIF days of that network, I would watch The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family. During the fall of 1972, I was 5 years old, and my parents would go to Friday night bingo at the local firehouse while my Dad's mother (my paternal grandmother) would come over to sit with me to watch. Once LAS theme came on, that was my cue to go to bed.

i just went on to reread all the comments of this thread and was reminded who the studio singers were on this wonderful little tune, and now I can definitely hear the same sound as I did for years on The Partridge Family tracks. I have to say, these studio musicians were so beautifully smooth, mellow, and yes: groovy. Makes me ache for how much I miss being just a kid, still a few years away from even the cusp of young adulthood and all of the awesome responsibility that would entail. There's only one moment in any human lifetime when you feel this free, this filled with possibility and wonder, and songs like this magically recall such a moment vividly. With music by Charles Fox, a distinctive trumpet solo pervading, and exquisite background harmonies nearly blending as one, pop music just does not get any better than this.

Gregory Putnam The music here really is very serene and super-catchy, something that, sad to say, today's TV composers somehow refuse to emulate. But yet, they'll want to zero in on the Brady Bunch instead, which BTW, was on LAS's Friday night lineup for ABC in the early 70's.

That's what kids do! I remember from 2nd grade '67/'68 on, when our Mom would tell us on the weekends and all summer that it's a nice day and we shouldn't be couped up in the house watching 'Love American Style' and to go play! And to this day, I don't drag a friend with me to go shopping or anywhere. We would be gone all day, and made sure to home before the streetlights came on, or we would be reminded that we'd better make it damn sure next time! Imagine that? A
6, 7, 8, 9 year old kid that could leave the house in the morning on foot, or on a bike, and be gone till dark, with no one paying attention that a little kid's out in the world by himself!

@Trip Fontaine Thanks so much for this! The show was corny and silly, but it was designed that way. The vignettes were often inspired, and one of them was the origin of the "Happy Days" TV show (empire?) and all that followed from it. I was just a kid, but since it was my mom's favorite show, she would let me watch it with her. All 109 episodes of Love American Style were scored by 2x Emmy winning composer Charles Fox. Though Fox wrote the music for many iconic tv shows after that-- Happy Days, Love Boat, Laverne & Shirley, Wonder Woman-- this is the only show he did each episode for. Fox is now the subject of a great new documentary called "Killing Me Softly With His Songs"-- based on his & Norman Gimbel's 1973 Grammy winning hit song. He recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted by his Love Boat lyricist Paul Williams.

Not many people notice or pick up on the VS reference, I was going to change it years ago but wasn't sure how and just left it. I used to joke that "he stole my theme!" (Heart: Magic Man) lol. Anyway, yes Charles Fox has a very distinctive sound, and one l again associate with the same time frame as VS as a matter of fact. Love American Style theme had it all: mellow vocals, a romantic tone, and catchy lyrics. Really loved it then and love it still. Thanks for the friendly replies.

Have to disagree with the folks who think the Cowsills version was better. That was good but too slow-paced and laid back. This one was better, and the TV version heard over the show's intro was the best of all. That was even more upbeat and peppier than this, with stronger brass and electric bass tracks, the energetic rendition much more befitting the fireworks exploding all over the screen.

Yep, it's true. I heard ABC was cutting costs (as usual) and didn't want to keep paying the royalties to the Cowsills for every episode they aired. So they got the Ron Hicklin Singers, a studio group, to record this version that was used for the 2nd season and beyond (at a much cheaper cost). The Ron Hicklin Singers were credited for "Love American Style" as "The Charles Fox Singers" due to Charles Fox being the musical director and principal songwriter of the show. They actually were used at times during even the first season for "incidental music" such as the very first "Love American Style" episode (first segment, "Love and a Couple of Couples" starring Michael Callan and Penny Fuller) where they sing at the beginning "Find Yourself a Friend". The Ron Hicklin Singers were formed around the core of the old group "The Love Generation" a flower-power/"feel good" rock group of 1967/68 (biggest hit: "Groovy Summertime" which peaked at #74 on the Billboard Charts in 7/67). As the Ron Hicklin Singers, they backed-up many recording artists in the studio (Percy Faith, Ray Coniff, TV's fictional "Partridge Family", Johnny Cash, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Cher, Gene Vincent, Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, Paul Revere & the Raiders). They also recorded dozens of TV commercial jingles (Shakeys Pizza, American Motors, IHOP, McDonalds, Datsun, Kawasaki, etc).

Sorry its taken so long to respond, I'm still not used to this Google Plus stuff. :p I mainly intended just to share the great instrumentals by Charles Fox on this album when I shared these but put this one up as well at the time as it differed from the more available version and was harder to find at the time.
I don't have access to the vocal songs from the OST at the moment (different PC than I used then) or I'd share those as well (not sure if they're available elsewhere now but at the time I shared these they were, but the instrumentals *weren't*, another incentive for me to get those great instrumentals out for others to enjoy.)
I will check these videos and respond to comments too but I just wanted to give a general thank you to everyone who has commented and enjoyed these tracks as well as any others on my channel!

This was Composer Charlie Fox's first credited weekly theme, though he had already ghost written themes for "Wide World of Sports" , "What's My Line" and "To Tell The Truth". Charlie, then 28, was hired for LAS based on his (and Bob Crewe's) work on "Barbarella". Charlie scored all 108 "Love American Style" episodes which led to him writing theme songs for many of the most successful shows of the 70's and 80's including "Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley", "Love Boat", "Paper Chase" & "Wonder Woman".

The Ron Hicklin singers sang on hundreds of hit records. More than once people told me one of my favorite songs by The Raiders, "Birds of a Feather", sounds like the Partridge Family. I eventually found out that they were the same singers on every PF recording. Climax, Union Gap, Mark Lindsay, so many huge hits had the Ron Hicklin Singers performing the backing vocals supposedly sung by the group They perfomed the theme to "Happy Days" w Ron Hicklin himself singing lead, "Laverne and Shirley" - all backing vocals for Cindy Grecco, so many. Interestingly, Ron Hicklin co-sang lead with Gary Lewis on all of the Playboys recordings - the lead voice was actually a blend of the two, some say with Hicklin's voice being the dominant one.
