I can't even imagine how hard losing her must be. Mazzy Star's ethereal, dream-like music has always been a go-to for me when I'm feeling sad (especially their song "Into Dust"). I hope listening to Mazzy Star brings you comfort and fond memories.
I remember in the 90s sitting on my gf's balcony playing this cd, this song playing in the background as we had 2am conversations about what we wanted to do with our life. We'd be coming down from a tequila buzz and sitting there looking at the moon or some of the planets (light polutution kept us from seeing many stars.) Mazzy Star was the perfect vibe for those moments. I miss those moments with her but not all relationships were meant to last. Everytime I hear this song, just for a moment I'm on that balcony in the 90s with her again. We faded into each other and we faded apart but for a moment, we had something special.
That's one of the best parts about music to me... the intense memories and nostalgia that it brings back. Sometimes when I'm having a shitty day dealing with all of the stress and anxiety of being a wife and a mother and having to stress about money and whatever else is going on that particular day, I just put on my favorite 90's Playlist, and it's like I'm transported back to a simpler time. When the music was far better! lol!
If you have a soul... Fade into you is an instant tear jerker that you have to crank up and just feel it in your bones...Over used? No... Under appreciated for what it is honestly, only so many songs ever capture the human condition in such fashion.
Hope's voice is so hauntingly beautiful and fits so well into feel of Fade Into You. She makes you ache inside, even if you cant express what it is you are aching for.
In high school (early to mid 80s) I was a huge Jesus and Mary Chain (J&MC) fanatic. Mazzy Star toured with J&MC quite a lot. As a San Diego boy I got to see Mazzy Star quite a lot in the small clubs that my fake ID got me into, be it in San Diego or all the way up to Sunset Boulevard in LA. It was no surprise to me when "Sometimes Always" was released and Hope joined in with J&MC's Jim Reid as a duet. They were always pals on the road (platonic as the rumors went). When you are listening to psych punk and then Mazzy Star comes on stage, your mind is blown! It's akin to sitting in a hot tub then jumping into a cool swimming pool, the shock is creative and powerful. Adam, I'm glad you mentioned Hope's introverted personality. Too many people back then thought she was hopped up on heroin during her performances. The truth is if there are more than 50 people watching her sing, she nearly freezes up from fear. In the small clubs (literally basement bars with a corner set aside for a band to play) there were only 15-20 people. Hope would casually chat with a few she felt comfortable with and I even got a "hi" from her. Still a shy girl, "hi" was as best as one could expect if she didn't know you. Of all the stadium and arena concerts I've been to, the performances I have the best memory of are those tiny little "nothing" bars and clubs where bands like Mazzy Star played. Another one in San Diego was a kick-back, dimly lit bar where this Alaskan girl used to sing... her music was more background music as you played pool or threw darts: Jewel (aka Jewel Kilcher). I have to tell you, the BEST musicians are those found in the tiny little dive bar/clubs that you really have to know someone to know the bar or club is there. I will always love Hope Sandoval. Sitting literally three feet from her as she sings not on stage, but on the same floor as your table and chair while you knock back a cold one... the woman is pure mystical magic, a dream that has come to life standing right there in front of you. Is she real or an apparition? Then the song ends and as long as there are just a few people in the room, she speaks. She's simply an amazing creation of God.
I saw her in Denver or Boulder during the '90s, and once with Jesus and Mary Chain. No lights during the show, and asked the audience not to applaud or clap. Very unusual, but also oddly intimate, with just a few amp lights on stage in a black theater. Great shows...
Well that explains everything lol Fade Into You was a huge hit in the 90s and here in the UK everybody loves it the charts say nothing and it was on the radio so much i can't count and it's still played sometimes on 90s radio stations such as Nation Radio it just depends when. I'm sorry she was so shook to her core when that song became famous but how could she expect it not to? why did she go on talk shows if they didn't want to become so famous? i guess maybe she gave it a try but couldn't handle it after all. Watching her sing on live on the conan show in 1994 i dunno she didn't seem to have a lot of confidence either her hair was always over her face, i don't know what happened in her early years except her parents divorced but i just feel she didn't feel good about the praise she gets with her music she likes music but shys away from people so much she seemed so withdrawn. I hope she was able to gain some confidence in herself since then because her voice is so nice and cute.
I was in San Diego in that era but had no clue about the small clubs. Missed opportunities. BTW, there's a video here on YT that I saw a year or more ago where Jewel had a partial prosthetic face put on including pro-makeup and sang one of her hit songs in a small karaoke club. It's a good video.

Hope Sandoval's voice is astonishing. She brilliantly blends innocence and world weariness and, while she may hate the label, there isn't a sexier voice anywhere. I know she was devastated by David Roback's death. I was also. Most astonishing song of all, for me, was Into Dust. Very dark and moody, it blows me away every time, even after all these years.
I never get tired of “Fade Into You,” but I also love “Into Dust” from the same album. Hope’s work with Massive Attack is fantastic as well, especially “Paradise Circus.” Great episode, Professor!
Yes same here but I'm a alot younger and I never heard this song till 2020 .. Same with running up the hill think it was around 2021 or 2022 . Telling the wifey these songs sounds like the group is using the late 80 and 90 music style. Then finding out it was a group from those years. Like the guy the Weekend 😎 he sounds he's from the 80s and 90s with his style of music. Like After Hours and Starboy has that 80s and 90s vibe to them .
Watching Hope perform Fade Into You live is intoxicating. It’s like she’s up there desperately trying to hide while being totally exposed. She’s such an enchanting performer even though you always feel like she’d rather be anywhere but in front of the world’s eyes
She Hangs Brightly is their masterpiece. Perfect, start-to-finish. The show I saw on that club tour, the audience laid around in almond-scented fog just listening. Never seen anything like it.

I was just back from the Middle East and I was blown away by Mazzy Star, the Breeders, Radiohead, Smashing Pumkins.. I was coming out of 5 years of Brit Pop in the discos of Abu Dhabi and Duabai so I had to wrap my head around "college rock" again in the U.S. -- it was a good thing.
Mazzy Star was a big part of my younger years. Do you know how hard it was for a 10 year old kid in the 90's to find a song you only heard once and Shazam (let alone the Internet) wasn't even around at the time? I had hummed Fade Into You for a long time until I heard it again in the Angus movie. From there I became a huge fan, painstakingly searching for their albums in music stores along with every band related to them (Kendra Smith, Opal, JAMC, My Bloody Valentine, etc.) Finding non-mainstream music pre-Internet was like an archaelogical adventure back then. I learned guitar from playing their songs and Halah remains my favorite song to play (my ukulele cover from 10 yrs ago is still floating around YT). I loved Hope's voice because I could sing in her range. I also felt like I could relate to her because I was shy & quiet too. But despite being a huge fan I really knew nothing about them apart from their music and eventually grew out of them in my 20's. But whenever they did release something or when Hope released her solo stuff I'd still check it out but it didn't quite capture the same feeling I had when I was younger. I'm in my 40's now and it's cool to hear Fade Into You still being played even though I know they're probably not too fond about that. Sometimes I think they were being pretentious about not wanting to be famous, if I were them I would at least acknowledge the attention I was receiving despite that not being my intention. Anyway, I was sad to hear of David's passing a few years ago and knowing that I will never see Mazzy Star live unless Hope decides to do something although most of the original band had passed or left. But that was a walk down memory lane. TL:DR Mazzy Star was a big part of my teenage years but because of their reclusiveness, I eventually grew out them. Hearing their songs now in my 40's is nostalgic but don't tell them that, they'll tell you it's not. RIP David (and William and Keith).
This is truly my favorite song of all time. From when I first saw it on MTV I’d planned to have this played at my wedding as I danced with my future wife. While I did finally get married, it was unfortunately during COVID, so that dream of slow dancing with my bride never happened. Oh well, still an absolutely perfect song. I love that it was never mega-popular, so that I could always sort of hold it as my own in a way. I did finally see Hope perform live a few years back. Unfortunately, she didn’t sing Fade Into You. Your episode sort of hints at why.

Professor of Rock Back in 2008 I met Hope at her house. The funny thing is I didn't know who she was and the only song that I have heard small clips of on the radio. I was mesmerized by her voice Flowers in December. In my line of work I knocked on her door when she opened the door, I was so taken back by how beautiful she is, I lost all train of thought as to why I was there.... We talked for about half hour...she is a vey kind person. It wasn't until October of 2022 that I figured out my memory when I heard Flowers in December from beginning to end and sean her picture. She is my favorite artist...... Thanks for covering one of the greatest song writers and perhaps one of the greatest voices if all time.
It would be nice for Adam to cover the Cocteau Twins, although their most famous song, a cover of Song for the Siren by Pete Buckley, was released as part of This Mortal Coil. There’s definitely a parallel between Fraser and Sandoval, despite the difference in style: they both take you somewhere else entirely.
Mazzy Star's cover of Wild Horses is my favorite. The haunting beauty they are able to give the song is both comforting and hypnotic. Keep up the great work Professor!

Among My Swan may not have produced a high charting single but it has one of their most hauntingly beautiful songs in All Your Sisters. Just acoustic guitar, occasional strings/violin lines and Hope's mesmerizing voice. Just perfect in its simplicity.
I was about thirteen when I read an article in the music section of the weekly newspaper. It talked about this amazing dreamy-voice psycedelic-atmosphere new artist, describing Mazzy Star. I cut out that article and kept it in my closet so that when I get to the music store in the big city - I'd get myself that album. I was living in a small village in a not-English speaking country and I was very young, but the description mesmerized me and I'd kept that cut out article for years, until I was old enough. I have all three of their CDs. They are as described :)

Agreed, Hopes voice is so hypnotic. Bought the album when it first came out. No bad cuts. Best album to chill with a beer. I respect their choice to not pursue fame. Its not for everyone.

Your video reminded me of how lucky I was to see Mazzy Star in 1993. It was at a small club called La Luna in Portland Oregon. It was basically a big room with a stage, no seating. The anonymity that they desired was my gain, as I literally stood directly in front of Hope, looking up at her on the stage transfixed by the music. Definitely one of my better concert memories.

That is a great suggestion (that, as it turns out, I've made before). They are great guys, and the line, "nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view" remains unbeaten.
The songs on "So Tonight That I Might See" have a dreamy, ethereal sound. Listening to it was like stepping into another time and space. It stood head and shoulders above other 90s albums, was one of my favorites.

Been a fan since 1990. Mazzy Star was the soundtrack of my teenage angst. Hope's voice is haunting yet hopeful and she touched a lot of lives whether she intended to or not. David's instrumentals are still living in my heart and always will. When Fade into You comes on, I stop what I am doing and just listen. ❤️

I remember a co-worker bringing this song to my attention in the early 2000's. He gave me a copy, and when I heard it, I was like "I've heard this before!!!" I think it might've played on the radio one night in the 90's, and I had forgotten about it. As far as performing live, I get it. I remember when my band played at a high school talent show, the year AFTER I graduated. We had a lot of members, and two of them were seniors in high school. I remember being super nervous, and the crowd wasn't that big. To me, it was a natural high. As you perform, the butterflies go away to an extent. When you're finished, you feel so good about what you had accomplished. It's hard to explain, but that feeling is actually a good thing. You wanted it to be over before you started, and then you have an indescribable feeling when you're done & you get that awesome ovation. 😎
When this song and album dropped in 93', within months Fade into You was in so many noir type movies you could not get away from it for over a decade. You heard that song more in movies than you did on radio except for the real alternative music radio stations.
I had a similar experience as you playing in my high school’s battle of the bands for about 500 people in the audience. Most of the members of my band had experienced playing at least one live gig before; but for me it was to be my first. Also luck of the draw put our band slotted as the final band to play out of 5 bands, so it was as if we were in the headliner spot and would have to wait almost 2 hours before we would go on, while listening to each of the other bands play before us. My band mates had warned me how no one knows how they will react when they first go onstage and that I could possibly freeze and end up standing in one spot our entire set. But once the curtains opened to us pounding the intro to “Am I Evil” that all went away and I ended up the most energetic member of our band. It was a rush as you mentioned.

I still remember when i first heard it playing in the background while talking to my first love on the phone... It was erie and yet comforting, hypnotizing. This song, along witht the band, has remained on my constant music rotation. So glad I had a chance to see them play live many years later....

Hallah was the first song of Mazzy Star's that I ever heard and I could not get enough, went and bought the album that day. Someone ended up liking it too and when we broke up she took it with her. Now, thanks to the internet, I have a near-complete collection of Hope Sandoval songs. I understand their love and commitment to the art, the lack of desire to be on stage...but damn I wish they'd kept at it longer! And indeed, I think it's a good song, too.

I feel like this song was on the soundtrack of every indie drama and teen TV drama produced from 93 to 2000... I know it wasn't, but it felt that way lol.

Always loved this from the very first listen. I was reeling from a broken relationship and physical injury, and it grabbed my heart and soul, and i knew then…. i wasn’t alone. It gave me a strength i never thought i had. Hope’s voice, so sweet, so melodic, so sad… there is no one like her.
I was lucky enough to see them play in February 2019 in a cathedral in LA (yup, a cathedral!) ...and in hindsight, it was the most PERFECT place for them to have played, and not just because watching them was like a religious experience. No lights on, save for a small light shone onto a disco ball, so twinkling blips scattered around the room, and a small cord of purple Christmas lights wrapped around Sandoval's mic stand, both mixing with whatever moonlight/streetlights shone through the stained glass windows. We were also warned, VERY much so, no picture-taking allowed. Sandoval genuinely sounds like an earth angel, and she sounds even better live than via recording (I didn't even know that that was possible!). It was the only time I ever got to see them, and I feel so grateful that I did so! Funny enough, my favorite song by them is NOT "Fade Into You;" it's "Into Dust." No particular reason why.
NOW you're talkin' my language.... I got SO into Mazzy Star after hearing 'Fade Into You'-- I made sure to catch the band's name, bought their first two albums, then dug into their discographies & found Rain Parade & Opal, and kept my ears & eyes open for more!!! If Mazzy Star's 4 albums, TWI's three aren't enough of that "nostalgia-punk' sound--- don't forget that Mazzy Star bandmate Suki Ewers put out an album called 'Kind of Hazy', and Dave Roback produced the soundtrack for the film called 'Clean' starring Maggie Cheung. Hey, what can I say, I hear a style I like... I wanna hear as much of it as I can find!! I still hope that Hope Sandoval will someday consider releasing the album that Dave Roback produced for her, prior to her joining Opal.
@@Aqualyra "nostalgia-punk"... it's a play on terms like 'streampunk' and 'cyberpunk'. Dave Roback was mixing modern guitar-oriented rock, with a VERY healthy dose of nostalgia for the flower-child fuzzy-guitar haze of the 1960s.
Hope Sandoval's voice is often referred to as the voice of an angel. I love all of the Mazzy Star music, and I also have all of her releases from Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions. I think Hope could sing me the yellow pages and I'd still be all in with it. She is, hands down, one of my top three favorite female vocalists. I was super pleased to see this video on the band. And Roback on guitar is awesome too. What a musical pair they were.
I’ve seen Mazzy Star perform live 3x and I think they are sensational. I own all of their albums and I think it’s perfectly fine for them to create art for the sake of creating art. Commercial success is not, nor will ever be, a prerequisite for creative inspiration. I will simply appreciate them for creating art that I truly enjoy. Thank you Hope & David. ❤️

I saw Hope Sandoval live in Vancouver in a small club after her Mazy Star days. It was her concert. She stormed off the stage after two songs. Everyone went home. True story.
I saw her with the Jesus and Mary Chain in 94 and the crowd was too “noisy” for the guitarist to retune in between songs so they skipped out. Another true story. She did come back to do a perfunctory appearance with JAMC on Sometimes Always
So nice to have an episode on a 90’s song. This is one of my favorites from that time. Makes me a little sad when I listen, though, because it transports me back to a time I wish I could return to.
I can completely relate to that. I have some very specific memories attached to the first two tapes, and especially Fade Into You, and Halah. I'll always love them, but it definitely makes me a little sad.

When "tonight that I may see" came out, i was working pizza, i'd get in late, sometimes midnight to 2am, i'd pop the CD in, light up a bowl and listen to every song all the way thru. I have fond memories of that era...
I'm trying to get some work done but you keep making these interesting videos that I can't resist. We have an all-day music event coming up in Long Island NY and the only song I specifically requested from an artist was "Fade Into You". I love the song and I'm always happy to hear it. It holds a monopoly on a specific bittersweet feeling it invokes. No other song is able to quite hit that mark, being too emotional, inauthentic, perhaps too cool. Hope Sandoval dials it in.
In 1995 or 1996 I saw them open for the Jesus and Mary Chain at the Metro in Chicago. A friend of a friend was friends with JMC's road manager, so not only were our tickets free we also had backstage passes. After the show I was back stage sitting on a couch drinking free beer and was pretty drunk. Hope Sandoval walked in and sat right next to me. Now I'm no ladies man and kind of shy around women but this was the opportunity of a lifetime so I tried to hit on her, it did not go well 🤣 but was worth a shot damn she was gorgeous in person.

I've never heard of Mazzy Star until yesterday. It's interesting that a song like "Fade Into You," would remind me of the time where I spent time travelling through Russia, in 1997 and 1998. The imagery is just wonderful and magical. The song is like a simple black & white portrait that your brain can see in vivid color, a bitter taste that turns sweet, a faint smell that reminds you of your saddest and fondest memory, of something you can't let go of and yet it fades to exist forever in your heart.
Lovely song, one of my all-time favorites. I've never heard another like it. It's one of those songs that will still be relevant decades after its release.
Totally forgot about this one! I kinda remember it came out when some country-ish mellow songs like Gin Blossoms "Found Out About You" and Toad the Wet Sprocket's "Walk in the Ocean" were released... It was a nice counter to the grunge wave that was hitting us....

"Fade Into You" has been all over social media for the last couple years. However, I noticed it has slowed down a little over the last few months. Maybe since you published this video it will pick up again. Love this song, Mazzy Star, and Hope.
I discovered Dream Syndicate a couple of years ago, don’t know how I missed them when I was in college. Uncanny Lou Reed/VU vibe from a lot of their stuff.

I respect Mazzy Star's approach to have stayed away from mainstream media which is not always a savoury place in which to be. I respect their choice for choosing private lives. Let the music stand on its own and speak for the band. SO TONIGHT THAT I MIGHT SEE, when I finally bought it on vinyl in 2015, has become one of my all-time favourite albums and, again, the track "Into Dust" is sublime.
As a hard rocker and a guitar player, I followed a band called Starz. That band was a offshoot of the early 70s band Looking Glass. I remember a girl asking me what type of music I liked and I said Starz, and she replied I love that song Fade into you. Well you know the conversation got interesting after that. This song came out during my college years and I loved it instantly. I used to go on long walks and this was one of the songs I would listen to while walking. It took me away to another place. Fantastic.
Great song. But I will never understand artists who sign a record deal, record an album and agree to a tour. But then say they don't want fame and fortune. Why take those steps to begin with?

I agree. When you sign with a label, you agree to the contract. If you can't or won't follow the agreement, don't sign the stipulations. Stay independent and find someone who will agree to your terms at a small label. It's going to be hard as hell, but if fame and fortune are not your cup of tea, I get it. Saw a few recording studios in artists' basements firsthand. Wanting to be an artist instead of a performer. Most people want both. I personally hate a screaming, noisy audience when I'm trying to listen to musical art. American idol, the x factor, Britain's Got Talent, etc. Hate the shows, not the musicians, because when someone is performing or singing, the audience is making so much noise blocking the artist/musician performance. Clap/yell before, clap/yell after. Like a tennis tournament. It's not always a Kiss concert, LOL. House of Blues in Chicago is a great venue to play at. Basement and small town concerts are still my favorite. Metallica in Moscow 1991, extremely cool, just not my cup of tea. It's about how much "dues" you are willing to pay, to get where you want. Just ask Heart, Stevie Nicks, and any other musician.
Thank you for telling the story of Mazzy Star. I’ve always been a fan but I didn’t know their story as a band. I feel honoured to have seen them live when they opened for the Jesus and Mary Chain in Tampa Florida. I went to that show more for Mazzy Star than for TJMC but it was a good show over all. Hope was amazing. They both were but there was a magic in her shyness. I remember for the first couple songs she didn’t look up at the audience. Then during the third song she looked up and everyone got goose bumps and fell in love with her. She had the mic stand set extra high and angled the mic down toward herself and she kind of hid behind it. But it worked. It was a tease of beauty and mystery and because of that we just flowed with the music. She is a shy performer, yes, but she uses it to draw everyone in brilliantly.
15:55 Ironically, this reminds me of Massive Attack 30 odd years ago. They were dubbed “the greatest band you’ve never heard of” despite everyone having heard their music in soundtracks etc. I say “ironic” because they’ve done multiple tracks with Hope Sandoval.
You're right "lightning in a bottle" as near perfect a song as could ever be written and recorded. It's no wonder that it has the place in music history that it occupies. i spoke with hope a few years ago and she is was still doing music like always. Fame doesn't happen to the artists, it happens to the fake person the media creates you to be.
Of the thousands of artist and more on songs, though not making me anything like you PoR, I have never heard any of these singers, bands nor the songs. This is what I miss most on growing up finding how much I never knew and heard of the music I did not grow up with. The bright light of this channel along with the bands, singers and music I get to learn not knowing the inside.
Fade Into You is such a meaningful, emotional song. It hits hard, and it is timeless. If they never wanted megafame, then I am glad it earns her money without dragging her into the spotlight again. Thanks for the feelings Hope.
@ProfessorOfRock. The Mazzy Star song that truly hits the bullseye of “Ghostly” “Ethereal” and “Haunting” is another tune used by many TV show and movie producers: “Into Dust”. That song is so haunting that it triggers my depression a little bit.
I’ve always thought this was such a beautiful song. I actually just re-watched “Angus” over the weekend. Loved that movie and the soundtrack. Great to hear the story behind this one!

I remember in the 90s sitting on my gf's balcony playing this cd, this song playing in the background as we had 2am conversations about what we wanted to do with our life. We'd be coming down from a tequila buzz and sitting there looking at the moon or some of the planets (light polutution kept us from seeing many stars.) Mazzy Star was the perfect vibe for those moments. I miss those moments with her but not all relationships were meant to last. Everytime I hear this song, just for a moment I'm on that balcony in the 90s with her again. We faded into each other and we faded apart but for a moment, we had something special.
A beautiful memory for sure. I think of those memories as our treasures we collect with life.

That's one of the best parts about music to me... the intense memories and nostalgia that it brings back. Sometimes when I'm having a shitty day dealing with all of the stress and anxiety of being a wife and a mother and having to stress about money and whatever else is going on that particular day, I just put on my favorite 90's Playlist, and it's like I'm transported back to a simpler time. When the music was far better! lol!

If you have a soul... Fade into you is an instant tear jerker that you have to crank up and just feel it in your bones...Over used? No... Under appreciated for what it is honestly, only so many songs ever capture the human condition in such fashion.
Hope's voice is so hauntingly beautiful and fits so well into feel of Fade Into You. She makes you ache inside, even if you cant express what it is you are aching for.

In high school (early to mid 80s) I was a huge Jesus and Mary Chain (J&MC) fanatic. Mazzy Star toured with J&MC quite a lot. As a San Diego boy I got to see Mazzy Star quite a lot in the small clubs that my fake ID got me into, be it in San Diego or all the way up to Sunset Boulevard in LA.
It was no surprise to me when "Sometimes Always" was released and Hope joined in with J&MC's Jim Reid as a duet. They were always pals on the road (platonic as the rumors went).
When you are listening to psych punk and then Mazzy Star comes on stage, your mind is blown! It's akin to sitting in a hot tub then jumping into a cool swimming pool, the shock is creative and powerful.
Adam, I'm glad you mentioned Hope's introverted personality. Too many people back then thought she was hopped up on heroin during her performances. The truth is if there are more than 50 people watching her sing, she nearly freezes up from fear. In the small clubs (literally basement bars with a corner set aside for a band to play) there were only 15-20 people. Hope would casually chat with a few she felt comfortable with and I even got a "hi" from her. Still a shy girl, "hi" was as best as one could expect if she didn't know you.
Of all the stadium and arena concerts I've been to, the performances I have the best memory of are those tiny little "nothing" bars and clubs where bands like Mazzy Star played.
Another one in San Diego was a kick-back, dimly lit bar where this Alaskan girl used to sing... her music was more background music as you played pool or threw darts: Jewel (aka Jewel Kilcher).
I have to tell you, the BEST musicians are those found in the tiny little dive bar/clubs that you really have to know someone to know the bar or club is there.
I will always love Hope Sandoval. Sitting literally three feet from her as she sings not on stage, but on the same floor as your table and chair while you knock back a cold one... the woman is pure mystical magic, a dream that has come to life standing right there in front of you. Is she real or an apparition? Then the song ends and as long as there are just a few people in the room, she speaks. She's simply an amazing creation of God.
I saw her in Denver or Boulder during the '90s, and once with Jesus and Mary Chain. No lights during the show, and asked the audience not to applaud or clap. Very unusual, but also oddly intimate, with just a few amp lights on stage in a black theater. Great shows...
Well that explains everything lol Fade Into You was a huge hit in the 90s and here in the UK everybody loves it the charts say nothing and it was on the radio so much i can't count and it's still played sometimes on 90s radio stations such as Nation Radio it just depends when. I'm sorry she was so shook to her core when that song became famous but how could she expect it not to? why did she go on talk shows if they didn't want to become so famous? i guess maybe she gave it a try but couldn't handle it after all.
Watching her sing on live on the conan show in 1994 i dunno she didn't seem to have a lot of confidence either her hair was always over her face, i don't know what happened in her early years except her parents divorced but i just feel she didn't feel good about the praise she gets with her music she likes music but shys away from people so much she seemed so withdrawn. I hope she was able to gain some confidence in herself since then because her voice is so nice and cute.
I was in San Diego in that era but had no clue about the small clubs.

BTW, there's a video here on YT that I saw a year or more ago where Jewel had a partial prosthetic face put on including pro-makeup and sang one of her hit songs in a small karaoke club. It's a good video.

Hope Sandoval's voice is astonishing. She brilliantly blends innocence and world weariness and, while she may hate the label, there isn't a sexier voice anywhere. I know she was devastated by David Roback's death. I was also. Most astonishing song of all, for me, was Into Dust. Very dark and moody, it blows me away every time, even after all these years.
Into Dust is a stunning song. I absolutely adore it.
I never get tired of “Fade Into You,” but I also love “Into Dust” from the same album. Hope’s work with Massive Attack is fantastic as well, especially “Paradise Circus.” Great episode, Professor!

I was just back from the Middle East and I was blown away by Mazzy Star, the Breeders, Radiohead, Smashing Pumkins.. I was coming out of 5 years of Brit Pop in the discos of Abu Dhabi and Duabai so I had to wrap my head around "college rock" again in the U.S. -- it was a good thing.
The not officially grunge, “alternative” music genre of the 1990’s included so much incredible music.
In a time when everyone want to be famous, it's refreshing to hear about someone who went out of their way to avoid it.
Mazzy Star was a big part of my younger years. Do you know how hard it was for a 10 year old kid in the 90's to find a song you only heard once and Shazam (let alone the Internet) wasn't even around at the time? I had hummed Fade Into You for a long time until I heard it again in the Angus movie. From there I became a huge fan, painstakingly searching for their albums in music stores along with every band related to them (Kendra Smith, Opal, JAMC, My Bloody Valentine, etc.) Finding non-mainstream music pre-Internet was like an archaelogical adventure back then.
I learned guitar from playing their songs and Halah remains my favorite song to play (my ukulele cover from 10 yrs ago is still floating around YT). I loved Hope's voice because I could sing in her range. I also felt like I could relate to her because I was shy & quiet too. But despite being a huge fan I really knew nothing about them apart from their music and eventually grew out of them in my 20's. But whenever they did release something or when Hope released her solo stuff I'd still check it out but it didn't quite capture the same feeling I had when I was younger.
I'm in my 40's now and it's cool to hear Fade Into You still being played even though I know they're probably not too fond about that. Sometimes I think they were being pretentious about not wanting to be famous, if I were them I would at least acknowledge the attention I was receiving despite that not being my intention. Anyway, I was sad to hear of David's passing a few years ago and knowing that I will never see Mazzy Star live unless Hope decides to do something although most of the original band had passed or left. But that was a walk down memory lane.
TL:DR
Mazzy Star was a big part of my teenage years but because of their reclusiveness, I eventually grew out them. Hearing their songs now in my 40's is nostalgic but don't tell them that, they'll tell you it's not. RIP David (and William and Keith).

This is truly my favorite song of all time. From when I first saw it on MTV I’d planned to have this played at my wedding as I danced with my future wife. While I did finally get married, it was unfortunately during COVID, so that dream of slow dancing with my bride never happened. Oh well, still an absolutely perfect song. I love that it was never mega-popular, so that I could always sort of hold it as my own in a way. I did finally see Hope perform live a few years back. Unfortunately, she didn’t sing Fade Into You. Your episode sort of hints at why.

Back in 2008 I met Hope at her house. The funny thing is I didn't know who she was and the only song that I have heard small clips of on the radio. I was mesmerized by her voice Flowers in December.
In my line of work I knocked on her door when she opened the door, I was so taken back by how beautiful she is, I lost all train of thought as to why I was there.... We talked for about half hour...she is a vey kind person.
It wasn't until October of 2022 that I figured out my memory when I heard Flowers in December from beginning to end and sean her picture.
She is my favorite artist......

It would be nice for Adam to cover the Cocteau Twins, although their most famous song, a cover of Song for the Siren by Pete Buckley, was released as part of This Mortal Coil. There’s definitely a parallel between Fraser and Sandoval, despite the difference in style: they both take you somewhere else entirely.

Among My Swan may not have produced a high charting single but it has one of their most hauntingly beautiful songs in All Your Sisters. Just acoustic guitar, occasional strings/violin lines and Hope's mesmerizing voice. Just perfect in its simplicity.
I was about thirteen when I read an article in the music section of the weekly newspaper. It talked about this amazing dreamy-voice psycedelic-atmosphere new artist, describing Mazzy Star. I cut out that article and kept it in my closet so that when I get to the music store in the big city - I'd get myself that album. I was living in a small village in a not-English speaking country and I was very young, but the description mesmerized me and I'd kept that cut out article for years, until I was old enough.
I have all three of their CDs. They are as described :)
I think of "Fade Into You" as being the female version of "Under The Milky Way".

Your video reminded me of how lucky I was to see Mazzy Star in 1993. It was at a small club called La Luna in Portland Oregon. It was basically a big room with a stage, no seating. The anonymity that they desired was my gain, as I literally stood directly in front of Hope, looking up at her on the stage transfixed by the music. Definitely one of my better concert memories.
La Luna had some great little shows come through there, I saw Belly and Velocity Girl there in 92 or 93.

Been a fan since 1990. Mazzy Star was the soundtrack of my teenage angst. Hope's voice is haunting yet hopeful and she touched a lot of lives whether she intended to or not. I remember a co-worker bringing this song to my attention in the early 2000's. He gave me a copy, and when I heard it, I was like "I've heard this before!!!" I think it might've played on the radio one night in the 90's, and I had forgotten about it.
As far as performing live, I get it. I remember when my band played at a high school talent show, the year AFTER I graduated. We had a lot of members, and two of them were seniors in high school. I remember being super nervous, and the crowd wasn't that big. To me, it was a natural high. As you perform, the butterflies go away to an extent. When you're finished, you feel so good about what you had accomplished. It's hard to explain, but that feeling is actually a good thing. You wanted it to be over before you started, and then you have an indescribable feeling when you're done & you get that awesome ovation. 😎

When this song and album dropped in 93', within months Fade into You was in so many noir type movies you could not get away from it for over a decade. You heard that song more in movies than you did on radio except for the real alternative music radio stations.
I had a similar experience as you playing in my high school’s battle of the bands for about 500 people in the audience. Most of the members of my band had experienced playing at least one live gig before; but for me it was to be my first. Also luck of the draw put our band slotted as the final band to play out of 5 bands, so it was as if we were in the headliner spot and would have to wait almost 2 hours before we would go on, while listening to each of the other bands play before us. My band mates had warned me how no one knows how they will react when they first go onstage and that I could possibly freeze and end up standing in one spot our entire set. But once the curtains opened to us pounding the intro to “Am I Evil” that all went away and I ended up the most energetic member of our band. It was a rush as you mentioned.

I still remember when i first heard it playing in the background while talking to my first love on the phone... It was erie and yet comforting, hypnotizing. This song, along witht the band, has remained on my constant music rotation. So glad I had a chance to see them play live many years later....

Hallah was the first song of Mazzy Star's that I ever heard and I could not get enough, went and bought the album that day. Someone ended up liking it too and when we broke up she took it with her. Now, thanks to the internet, I have a near-complete collection of Hope Sandoval songs. I understand their love and commitment to the art, the lack of desire to be on stage...but damn I wish they'd kept at it longer! And indeed, I think it's a good song, too.
That was my first song, too, and I did the same thing, bought the first two albums. Well, tapes in my case!

Always loved this from the very first listen. I was reeling from a broken relationship and physical injury, and it grabbed my heart and soul, and i knew then…. i wasn’t alone. It gave me a strength i never thought i had. Hope’s voice, so sweet, so melodic, so sad… there is no one like her.
I was lucky enough to see them play in February 2019 in a cathedral in LA (yup, a cathedral!) ...and in hindsight, it was the most PERFECT place for them to have played, and not just because watching them was like a religious experience. No lights on, save for a small light shone onto a disco ball, so twinkling blips scattered around the room, and a small cord of purple Christmas lights wrapped around Sandoval's mic stand, both mixing with whatever moonlight/streetlights shone through the stained glass windows. We were also warned, VERY much so, no picture-taking allowed. Sandoval genuinely sounds like an earth angel, and she sounds even better live than via recording (I didn't even know that that was possible!). It was the only time I ever got to see them, and I feel so grateful that I did so!
Funny enough, my favorite song by them is NOT "Fade Into You;" it's "Into Dust." No particular reason why.

I got SO into Mazzy Star after hearing 'Fade Into You'-- I made sure to catch the band's name, bought their first two albums, then dug into their discographies & found Rain Parade & Opal, and kept my ears & eyes open for more!!! If Mazzy Star's 4 albums, TWI's three aren't enough of that "nostalgia-punk' sound--- don't forget that Mazzy Star bandmate Suki Ewers put out an album called 'Kind of Hazy', and Dave Roback produced the soundtrack for the film called 'Clean' starring Maggie Cheung. Hey, what can I say, I hear a style I like... I wanna hear as much of it as I can find!! I still hope that Hope Sandoval will someday consider releasing the album that Dave Roback produced for her, prior to her joining Opal.

@@Aqualyra "nostalgia-punk"... it's a play on terms like 'streampunk' and 'cyberpunk'. Dave Roback was mixing modern guitar-oriented rock, with a VERY healthy dose of nostalgia for the flower-child fuzzy-guitar haze of the 1960s.
Hope Sandoval's voice is often referred to as the voice of an angel. I love all of the Mazzy Star music, and I also have all of her releases from Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions. I think Hope could sing me the yellow pages and I'd still be all in with it. She is, hands down, one of my top three favorite female vocalists. I was super pleased to see this video on the band. And Roback on guitar is awesome too. What a musical pair they were.

I’ve seen Mazzy Star perform live 3x and I think they are sensational. I own all of their albums and I think it’s perfectly fine for them to create art for the sake of creating art. I saw Hope Sandoval live in Vancouver in a small club after her Mazy Star days. It was her concert. She stormed off the stage after two songs. Everyone went home. True story.

I saw her with the Jesus and Mary Chain in 94 and the crowd was too “noisy” for the guitarist to retune in between songs so they skipped out. Another true story. She did come back to do a perfunctory appearance with JAMC on Sometimes Always

I can completely relate to that. I have some very specific memories attached to the first two tapes, and especially Fade Into You, and Halah. I'll always love them, but it definitely makes me a little sad.

I'm trying to get some work done but you keep making these interesting videos that I can't resist. We have an all-day music event coming up in Long Island NY and the only song I specifically requested from an artist was "Fade Into You". I love the song and I'm always happy to hear it. It holds a monopoly on a specific bittersweet feeling it invokes. No other song is able to quite hit that mark, being too emotional, inauthentic, perhaps too cool. Hope Sandoval dials it in.
In 1995 or 1996 I saw them open for the Jesus and Mary Chain at the Metro in Chicago. A friend of a friend was friends with JMC's road manager, so not only were our tickets free we also had backstage passes. After the show I was back stage sitting on a couch drinking free beer and was pretty drunk. Hope Sandoval walked in and sat right next to me. Now I'm no ladies man and kind of shy around women but this was the opportunity of a lifetime so I tried to hit on her, it did not go well 🤣 but was worth a shot damn she was gorgeous in person.

That happens to me with a lot of songs.
I've never heard of Mazzy Star until yesterday. It's interesting that a song like "Fade Into You," would remind me of the time where I spent time travelling through Russia, in 1997 and 1998. The imagery is just wonderful and magical. The song is like a simple black & white portrait that your brain can see in vivid color, a bitter taste that turns sweet, a faint smell that reminds you of your saddest and fondest memory, of something you can't let go of and yet it fades to exist forever in your heart.
Lovely song, one of my all-time favorites. I've never heard another like it. It's one of those songs that will still be relevant decades after its release.

I respect Mazzy Star's approach to have stayed away from mainstream media which is not always a savoury place in which to be. I respect their choice for choosing private lives. Let the music stand on its own and speak for the band. SO TONIGHT THAT I MIGHT SEE, when I finally bought it on vinyl in 2015, has become one of my all-time favourite albums and, again, the track "Into Dust" is sublime.
As a hard rocker and a guitar player, I followed a band called Starz. That band was a offshoot of the early 70s band Looking Glass. I remember a girl asking me what type of music I liked and I said Starz, and she replied I love that song Fade into you. Well you know the conversation got interesting after that. My favorite performances by a female rocker go to Ellen Foley and Marilyn Martin. Two of the best voices in music

Many of history’s greatest artists were not exactly “people person’s”. Social Anxiety Disorder is a very real thing.
I agree. When you sign with a label, you agree to the contract. If you can't or won't follow the agreement, don't sign the stipulations. Stay independent and find someone who will agree to your terms at a small label. It's going to be hard as hell, but if fame and fortune are not your cup of tea, I get it. Saw a few recording studios in artists' basements firsthand. Wanting to be an artist instead of a performer. Most people want both. I personally hate a screaming, noisy audience when I'm trying to listen to musical art. American idol, the x factor, Britain's Got Talent, etc. Hate the shows, not the musicians, because when someone is performing or singing, the audience is making so much noise blocking the artist/musician performance. Clap/yell before, clap/yell after. Like a tennis tournament. It's not always a Kiss concert, LOL. House of Blues in Chicago is a great venue to play at. Basement and small town concerts are still my favorite. Metallica in Moscow 1991, extremely cool, just not my cup of tea. It's about how much "dues" you are willing to pay, to get where you want. Just ask Heart, Stevie Nicks, and any other musician.

Thank you for telling the story of Mazzy Star. I’ve always been a fan but I didn’t know their story as a band.
I feel honoured to have seen them live when they opened for the Jesus and Mary Chain in Tampa Florida. I went to that show more for Mazzy Star than for TJMC but it was a good show over all.
Hope was amazing. They both were but there was a magic in her shyness. I remember for the first couple songs she didn’t look up at the audience. Then during the third song she looked up and everyone got goose bumps and fell in love with her. She had the mic stand set extra high and angled the mic down toward herself and she kind of hid behind it. But it worked. It was a tease of beauty and mystery and because of that we just flowed with the music. She is a shy performer, yes, but she uses it to draw everyone in brilliantly.
15:55 Ironically, this reminds me of Massive Attack 30 odd years ago. They were dubbed “the greatest band you’ve never heard of” despite everyone having heard their music in soundtracks etc. I say “ironic” because they’ve done multiple tracks with Hope Sandoval.

i spoke with hope a few years ago and she is was still doing music like always. Fame doesn't happen to the artists, it happens to the fake person the media creates you to be.
I fell in love with Hope's voice in seconds upon hearing this song. Despite her aversion to notoriety, she remains in my top 5 female singers.
Of the thousands of artist and more on songs, though not making me anything like you PoR, I have never heard any of these singers, bands nor the songs. This is what I miss most on growing up finding how much I never knew and heard of the music I did not grow up with. The bright light of this channel along with the bands, singers and music I get to learn not knowing the inside.
Fade Into You is such a meaningful, emotional song. It hits hard, and it is timeless. If they never wanted megafame, then I am glad it earns her money without dragging her into the spotlight again. Thanks for the feelings Hope.

@ProfessorOfRock. The Mazzy Star song that truly hits the bullseye of “Ghostly” “Ethereal” and “Haunting” is another tune used by many TV show and movie producers: “Into Dust”. That song is so haunting that it triggers my depression a little bit.
