  • I finally finished my updated and upgraded wooden scissor lift table. My original table was inspired by Marius Hornberger's table and I can admit it needed some work. I have made a lot of changes and improvements over my old table, all covered in the video.
    Plans for this table are now available. These are very detailed plans. The plan book is 146 pages, has both Imperial and Metric dimensions, as well as the drawings for both a plywood and a hardwood build. There are over 250 photos that accompany the step-by-step instructions.

    Excellent Video!!!!! This will be the perfect table for my chairmaking hobby. There are so many different levels that are needed if I am able to work without stooping over. It appears that all the details are in the book. Truly this project will be a challenge in laying out all those holes to get them in exactly the right place and square to the surface. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video.

      @@s.g.devries8557 Very nice, but a lot of you guys always assume people want something nice enough for their grand living room. I just need to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, and as inexpensively as possible. Also, assume (correctly, in my case) that my tools are very limited.

    Amazing video, thanks so much. It's so great that someone of your skill set takes the time to give others this kind of detail and insight. It allows us to gain an understanding of what's involved in a project like this. I love the project, would love to tackle it one day, and like Dorothy & The Wizard, you've done a stellar job of pulling back the curtain many mysteries so others can benefit from your knowledge. Thanks again. 👍

    So this idea would be interesting to apply to a trundle bed where you want the lower mattress to rise up to the level of the higher one when the lower mattress is pulled out... (makes sense?). Which is how I found this video as I am searching for a solution. Of course what you're showing here is beyond my skill set at the moment, and would take too long, sadly.

  • @Musicpins
    @Musicpins ปีที่แล้ว

    this is such a nice guide, I like the detail with ball bearings and everything, will run much more smoothly. I will make sure to get your book.
    I really like to cut wood threads for vices and the likes, and it would be a nice touch, for the lead screw that is. I think my 1 1/4 is 4 threads per inch? Would that work? That would mean no ball bearings in that part though.
    Oh btw the double jointed handle is really nice, haven't seen that before. Really brilliant.
    I didnt quite get, what is the tapered bearing for?

    • @s.g.devries8557
      @s.g.devries8557  ปีที่แล้ว

      The tapered bearing is because the entire weight of the table and tension on the lead screw pulls against it. The bearing needs to be able to handle force in two directions, both radial for the rotating shaft, and axial for the force of the nut pressing against it.
      Thanks for the nice comments, glad you enjoyed the project.
      As for wooden threads, even though they look cool, I doubt they would be able to handle the stress put on them. The lead screw holds the entire weight of the table along its length and that force is trying to shove the carriage nut away from the handle. It would be very easy to crack those threads right off. And I suspect there would also be far too much friction anyway to actually make the table usable. Even with steel threaded rod it needs grease because of the friction.

    Hiya. I bought the book and have started plugging away building with my son. What material did you use for the bushings? Here in Grande Prairie, Northern Alberta we dont have much in terms of selection for steel tubing with an ID of 1/2 that will take the threaded drill rod. Best I can figure I either buy 3/8 SCH 40 pipe and drill out the seam and a wee bit of wall or I just drill out the seven feet of 5/8 cold roll round stock.
    I'll try and call the two hydraulic shops in town tommorow to see if they have any steel tube that might work.
    But any advice on what I can use would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Sir, So I started building this table about 3 weeks before you released your updated video and instructions. That’s to bad for me because I could have benefited from all the learning you did over the last 3 years. Well my table is 95% complete now and work’s pretty well but I am not confident that it could lift over 100 lbs. can you tell me how much weight you have safely lifted with your new table and also with your first table built out of plywood? I built my using pine and plywood mostly and 1/2 inch threaded rod. Thanks

    • @garylarsen4038
      @garylarsen4038 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @s.g.devries8557  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huh, I was sure I typed a response to this…. Oh well, obviously it didn’t post. Anyway, my old table I lifted 80 pounds or so, but it stressed the table pretty bad. I haven’t tested my new table much yet, but I have used it for a few things, such as moving an antique drill press which has to be over 100 pounds and the table barely flexed. I don’t intend to give it any sort of load rating, since I really don’t know the upper limit and don’t want to ruin it finding out. I dont lift many super heavy loads with it, but the improved design has a lot more stability which was the main goal.

      I suppose it is possible. I would be concerned about the structural design on something that big. You are approaching an industrial size table at that point, and doubling the dimensions gives you four times the surface, and thus, at least four times the potential load someone would put on it, probably more. If I needed something that big I would probably buy it rather than try to design it myself.

      I need to know the weight as well, since I'd have to move it up and down stairs occasionally. If over 40-50 lbs, I'd have to make it so it could be easily broken down into several parts and reassembled.
      Also, since I sold my jointer / planer when I thought I was moving, I may have to build with plywood, or pre-milled wood from a home center.
