Maggie Greville is so fascinating. They should do a miniseries about her, and her fabulous parties. I can only imagine her, with the Duchess of York. The Greville Chandelier earrings are my absolute favorite. The Queen Mother must have been a terrific friend, to be bequeathed such a collection of precious jewelry.
It's such a pleasant place to visit; the house might be grand, but it seems to somehow still be on a human scale in the facades so it comes across as quite informal and inviting. The Grevilles created something quite wonderful there.
I think a lot of lies were told over the years and it was Maggies very rich father who was the social climber, and he pushed his daughter into ever higher social circles which he was included in. Maggies husband was a homosexual, so they never had a real marriage and therefore no children. Maggies pet dogs were her children and she lavished all her love on them. It’s simply another case of ‘Money talks’. Another interesting fact is that Maggies best friend was a working class woman who worked in her house. They became such good friends, going everywhere together, that this servant came to be known as ‘ the Duchess’. My children and I LOVE Polesden Lacey, it’s our favourite NT property.
It must have had been such a sad and depressing everyday life in all that luxury with no one to share your laughs and life with once your guests go home. Who usually only come for the glitz and champagne. I higly doubt that "Ol' Maggie" would have any friends at all without her fortune, and people tend to avoid those prone to gossip anyway. Such a sad woman, obsessed with impressing others much higher ranked than her.
