Thanks for taking on the best miniseries ever produced. Captain Dale Dye served in the Marine Corps from 1964 to 1984. He appeared in movies such as "Platoon" and "Saving Private Ryan." He made a career of being a military technical advisor to the movies. He put the actors through a boot camp to familiarize them with what they would need to know to effectively play their roles. Ron Livingston (Nixon) made a video of that process and it's worth viewing. Currahee!

The Londoner was dressed in a German uniform so that allied troops could familiarise themselves to make it easier to identify the enemy 😏

The British home guard were dressed up in german uniforms, so the paratroopers would get used to identifying how the germans looked.

If you're going all the way with this...be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup." I love the power move Winters makes by literally grabbing the pen out of Sobel's hand while he was abusing his power...it's brilliant. Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan in quality...CURRAHEE! ♠

The Paratroopers were taking off 5th June in the evening (9-10ish) flying 3ish hours, so dropping around midnight-1 or so in the morning on June 6th. They had to get to work before the sea-borne invasion started not long after dawn June 6th.
18:09 this is true for regular infantry. Submachine guns were given out to NCOs first. However, paratroopers were given more submachine guns than other units to because of the nature of their combat. NCOs still got priority, but each company was allotted six extra submachine guns to be issued out as needed.
You’ll see both the Thompson and M3 Grease Gun in this series. And also, Carwood Lipton was a Sergeant in that scene.

25:47 this was actually something that could be done back then. If you wanted to bring something like a sidearm overseas, you could. The opposite was true as well. If you captured an enemy weapon, you could have it shipped home and keep it. This is actually how a bunch of German handguns and Japanese rifles ended up on the US firearms collector’s market. I own a Japanese Arisaka that was a vet bringback.

@@SiblingsReactandDrinkno problem. My co-worker also owns a Luger his father captured off of a German soldier. And his buddy actually owns a Japanese Type 100 submachine gun. Yes. You could even bring back automatic machine guns, the caveat being that things like the magazines or bolts were thrown overboard and not brought back home. However, some of he guys hid those parts and brought them back home still.

All the men hated Sobel, but they all credited him for putting them into the kind of physical shape that helped them survive the war.
The men kicked out of the paratroopers would be reassigned to other units, they weren't just going back home.
During the original organization of Easy Company, there were three rifle platoons and a HQ (headquarters) section. Each of the platoons was to contain 3 x 12 man rifle squads as well as a six-man mortar team squad. There was also one machine gun attached to each of the rifle squads of Easy Company as well as a 60 mm mortar in each mortar team. So all in all you're looking at 146 men, based on pictures of an Easy company roster I found dated May 3rd 1944.
Winters is a Lieutenant, so that's why he carries a Thompson.
During the mutiny, only 2 sergeants are punished, because Col Sink figured out they were the ones responsible for it, being the two senior sergeants of the company. Harris joined the Pathfinders (airborne men who would land a few days ahead of the rest to find suitable areas for massive parachute drops) and would be killed a couple weeks after D-Day. Ranney was transfered to Item company but was able to rejoin Easy a few days before D-Day.
And, despite the actors looking older, everyone was very young back then. On D-Day, Winters was only 26, Nixon and Welsh were 25, Compton and Meehan only 22, and leading men into combat. Sobel, meanwhile, was 32 on D-Day.
The beaches were Omaha & Utah for the US, Gold & Sword for the British and Juno for the Canadians.
10,000$ in 1944 is worth almost 180,000$ today.
The planes left England on June 5th, late in the evening, as they wanted the airborne dropping early on D-Day, a few hours before the beach assaults. At dawn, there were already thousand of airborne men capturing objectives and taking over bridges and such.
Episode 1 first aired on September 9th, 2001...

Really enjoying your first reaction, it's refreshing to watch and listen to two people who are quite knowledgeable about the war, and very attentive to a lot of the details shown in the episode. I do enjoy watching younger folks take interest in it too but it's sometimes a little.. frustrating when they don't even know the most basic things of WWII. But you two know a whole lot, so that's a nice breath of fresh air. :)

I think you missed Simon Pegg, He was the one giving Winters his court martial papers. He did a very good American accent.

Interesting fact about Winters that gives a big idea as to why he was such a good leader...he enlisted in August of 1941 and completed training as an enlisted man, then he remained at the camp where he trained to help train other men after him. He was selected for Officer Candidate School in April 1942, and after he finished that training and became an officer in July 1942 he volunteered for the Airborne...so when we see him as a Platoon Leader in Easy, that is his third set of training that Winters is undergoing.
Fun fact...just about every Regiment in the US Army had an "Easy" company, because "easy" was just the military phonetic for the letter E and the standard structure of a US Army Regiment in WW2 was 9 companies that were lettered from A or Able thru I or Item. So all of those regiments had an B or Baker Company, they all had D or Dog Company, and they all had an E or Easy Company...and so forth.

Different writers and directors for different episodes. Tom Hanks co-wrote episode 1, and directed episode 5.
After watching the 10 episodes, it is very worthwhile to watch the documentary about the real men and history about the Airborne called “We Stand Alone Together” and the ‘video diary’ shot by Ron Livingston (Lewis Nixon) about the 2 week ‘boot camp’ that the actors did before filming.

This one is about the actors talking about their experiences on the show, going more in depth than the Livingston docu, which mostly just focuses on their physical boot camp.

If you're familiar with Imgur, there's a side-by-side picture there showing the french soldier and Tom Hanks, and it's most assuredly not the same person.

@@Dej24601 The french soldier isn't Tom Hanks. If the series was filmed this year, he MIGHT look like Hanks a little bit, but he certainly doesn't look like how Hanks looked 25 years ago. If you're familiar with imgur, look up this picture ' DoKfWZx ' it's a side-by-side of the soldier and Tom Hanks and it's assuredly not the same person.
The beaches were (west to east)
Utah (US), Omaha (US), Gold (UK), Juno (Canadian), Sword (UK). There were many other countries troops involved, they were rolled into US/UK Divisions. Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Poland.

I think you missed the mission explanation. The Airborne jumped in behind enemy lines during the night before the landings. They were to destroy the guns that would be firing onto the beaches. Cheers!🥂

They were there to capture bridges and other roads leading to the beaches in order to stop tanks and other army pushing onto the beaches. The guns were a side mission that happened after they landed.

This series is 99.9% factual. The men of Easy Company would not have done it if it was Hollywoodized.
But from here on out, this series is gonna get very real. But so worth it in the end.

The paratroopers actually went on D-Day - 1 or June 5th. (Well for plane take off jumps could be like 1am. Flight time with 1946 aircraft... Did they leave at 8 pm? Midnight?)

i grew up doing living history in E/506th Reenacted back in the 90's the book came out in 1992 so i was getting blackout drunk with many of the Easy company Troopers (won't name who as not to give anything away ) many things in the series was consolidated for time ect...so some details are wrong but the vets understood why.
How cool is that? You got hear their stories directly from them. Very nice.

Sobel(Ross) was totally inept in the field. As far as a trainer he was a total idiot. It just happened that his sadomasochistic style helped make the men tough. He never advanced any further in rank, and after the war led a sad life that ended with alcoholism and alone. The men had no respect for him and knew if he led them in battle many would die.
