Usually, the bodies of officers were returned for burial. The Confederates defending Fort Wagner buried Shaw with his men, intending it as an insult, as this was done as a purposeful slight. Robert Shaw's father, however, did not want his body returned, but insisted that he remain buried with his men. He later wrote a letter on the subject: "We would not have his body removed from where it lies surrounded by his brave and devoted soldiers. ... We can imagine no holier place than that in which he lies, among his brave and devoted followers, nor wish for him better company. - what a body-guard he has!"

I am a 76 year old history major, specializing in the American Civil War... At 51:43 you say, "Fuckin' South. What the hell, man." What a terrible thing to say. Obviously, you (1) have no concept or understanding of what motivated individual soldiers (mostly uneducated, mostly with no earthly idea of politics and such issues at state and national level) to fight in the war, other than "slavery." Remember, there was no internet, no radio, no television, very little, if any, education. The country was mostly rural and many people had never traveled farther than the nearest town or their own county. They simply fought out of loyalty to their family and neighbors. They did not want to bear the shame of not serving their family or state--that was all they needed to "understand." The whole war was terribly complex, both at the higher political levels, and at the lowest soldier level. So confusing. (2) You don't understand who your viewers are. Many viewers have no idea what the war was about, when it happened, and who the two sides were. But there are many other of your viewers who had ancestors on both sides. Out of family loyalty--a rare thing nowadays--they pass along from one generation to the next, the sacrifices those men and blue and gray made. And NEITHER side was totally "clean." Burning that house in Darien? Study William T. Sherman's "March to the Sea" with his federal troops through Georgia and South Carolina. So when you say "Fuckin' South," you show both a lack of balanced understanding of the war, as well as disrespect to viewers. (3) I enjoyed this movie when it premiered in 1990 or so. That said, it is Hollywood, and Hollywood exists to turn a profit for its investors. And profit comes from drama. And drama derives from "adjusting" the true facts. You just cannot cram two or three years of complex events into a two-hour film without truth suffering. I had three direct ancestors from Mississippi who fought in that terrible war, pitting Americans against each other. One was a 20 year old student when killed on the second day at Gettysburg. I have his pocket Bible and his pocket watch with broken glass. He was buried in a common grave, and his parents never knew what happened to him. Another was grievously wounded with a bullet through the jaw at the Battle of Atlanta, but somehow survived. The last one make in through the war unscathed. I also had others who served with the Union army. Our family lost men on both sides. Southern mothers and Union mothers were mothers, and they grieved for each others' losses. Lastly, as the war dragged onward, the soldiers on both sides found that they had more respect for each other than for the civilians and politicians who sent them off to war. Weather, disease, primitive medical care, lack of uniforms and shoes, awful food, contaminated water, lack of sanitation.....the list goes on for both sides. You see the Confederates removing Union shoes? In June-July 1863, as the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia marched into Pennsylvania, many were barefoot. A rumor of a warehouse of shoes in a little town of Gettysburg led to three days of combat and the worst battle of the war. At the surrender of Lee's Army at Appomattox Court House in 1865, the Union soldiers saluted the surrendering Confederate units. After the war, at the many reunions held on the battlefields, Union and Confederate soldiers would intermingle. If anyone had a right to say, "Fuckin' South.", it would be them. They were there; they made the sacrifices, not you or me. All we have done is watch a movie on a comfortable couch and sip a drink. So much for any "sacrifice" of our current generations. With respect, I would ask you to take a moment to reconsider what you said at 51:43, to let the emotion of that moment calm down, and to apologize to your viewers. Again, with respect.

@@RonnieGomes-rr4dl 😆😆😆 "Neo-confederate"? Well, if I am neo-confederate, then it stands to reason that I am just as much a neo-Union. I had three ancestors in Pennsylvania regiments and two from New York. Three of the five were wounded. One was KIA. But I'm sure you already knew that, right? And I'm so impressed that you are a close acquaintance with everyone else in the world--each and every person--such that you can speak for all of them when writing, "...no one else would get offended." Such searing intellect and comprehensive knowledge in depth of that war are certainly commendable. As it was, having been a US Army infantryman and commander for 26 years, I was brought to tears when I first saw this flick way back when. I could, and still do, relate to Colonel Shaw's loyalty to his men every time I watch this. I'd give Glory a nine our of ten, and in my opinion, Washington, Broderick, and Freeman should all have received Oscars.

F**K THE SOUTH and anyone who fought to uphold slavery. They were all guilty of treason. They didn't need the internet to know slavery was wrong.

    • @richardstephens5570

I grew up in the South and had relatives that fought for the Confederacy. I respect them as soldiers, but they were on the wrong side of history. At least Sherman was freeing slaves when he marched. During Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania in 1863, his troops rounded up blacks(most were not fugitive slaves) and sent them South into slavery(many of these abductions were done by Albert G. Jenkins' cavalry brigade).

I don't believe it is truly known why the Germans were firing their machine guns that night on the crossroads, but I have heard of two possibilities. Either they were try to sight the guns using tracer rounds or they were training the MG crew. Considering the German SS company seemed to be made up of young men and Non-Germans it is possible this unit was recently formed and the men had very little experience; which could also explain how Easy was able to completely demolish them with far fewer casualties.

During the assault on the dike, the red smoke is some artistic liberty taken by the show. In reality the men all started running at the same time, but Winters was an exceptional athlete who simply outran the rest of his company, and according to some others who heard him talk about the combat later that day, he felt hyper-focused, and it seemed to him that everyone else was moving in slow motion. The shout "Wahai Mohammed!" by the British Red Devils originates from a campaign in Tunisia, where some of these men saw a local man shouting at his donkey to get him to move. The Brits took a fun liking to the cry, turning it into a rallying cry of their own, used both in battle and in bar fights - they were quite fond of getting into kerfuffles with the US Airborne guys. It was said that if any Red Devil heard the cry while carousing around town, he'd drop everything and anything he was doing to go find where it came from and jump into the fray. Moose Heyliger claimed that, for the rest of his life, he could not remember what the challenge response should have been when the sentry shouted out to him before shooting him. I guess when you're a sentry and might be nervous a bit, hearing "IT'S MOOSE!" might easily be mistaken for some German words. When Guarnere comes back limping with the letter from Moose, and Winters tells him "No more joyriding," it refers to an incident not shown in the episodes, happening some time between Ep4 and Ep5. Guarnere was leading some men along the front lines along the Rhine, they were spread over almost a mile, so to make his task easier of going up and down, he stole a motorcycle from a nearby farm, but a German sniper took a shot at him and hit him the right leg, fracturing the tibia. Guarnere was sent back to England, but not wanting to be reassigned to another unit (which could happen if you were away too long) he put some black boot polish over his cast and tried walking out of the hospital, but was caught and forced to stay. He told the docs he'd just go AWOL at the first chance he got. He was eventually allowed to leave, but was busted back to Private for his behavior. However the paperwork never made it back to Easy Company so he rejoined it with his rank of Sergeant. Winters' trip to Paris and his episode in the subway is one of the best depicitions of PTSD I've ever seen on tv. Back then, it was called "battle fatigue", nobody realizing how much more severe it could be than just being "tired of fighting." Lt Rice who drives the jeep with the ammo at the end (did you recognize Jimmy Fallon?) made several ammo runs to supply Easy Company as much as he could, until he was ordered to stop by his superiors, as the Germans had already encircled the place. He was awarded a Bronze Star for this. Jimmy Fallon, not being a good stick shift driver, and being nervous acting for Tom Hanks, who was directing this episode, couldn't get the jeep into gear and needed to have 2 guys push the vehicle to get it moving.

Also, I always laugh a bit when Col Sink tells Winters "don't worry about administration.." when all he does in this episode is essentially type up action reports and inventory lists. Like I said above, Tom Hanks directed this episode (and had a cameo, he's one of the red devils in the barn, in the back left but he's hard to spot). Hanks is fond of typewriters, and it's kinda his trademark to include them in whatever he directs.

Great episode that covered so much; the mental & internal wrestling with combat…the stress, fatigue & psychological issues. How Winters was assigned a new position but had difficulty letting go of Easy. Thanks again for doing this magnificent series. (One question, why do you cut out the veterans at the intro? Thanks the key to this story. Would like to hear any commentary you have)

Cujo was the first Stephen king book That I ever read I was only about 7 years old at the time now at 46 I have read almost all of them I just started " You Like it Darker. I how ever saw the movie when I was only about 5 or 6 years old. The Book really makes you feel sorry for Cujo where they said he didn't want to do any of the bad things he did the rabies forces him to do it.

I believe Criston was supposed to be guarding Helaena and the kids since he is the sworn shield of the queen and she is now queen… perhaps dismissed his guards so he would be able to get with Alicent in secret, hence no guards anywhere near … can’t wait for next episode!

Here's a true scenario of Holland under five years of German occupation. The Germans are arresting any Dutch Jews and sending them off to death camps or work camps. These are your neighbors, your close friends, who you have known for generations. They are practically your family. Though you are Protestant, you provide a hiding place in your home for a Jewish family. You know if you are discovered you will be executed or sent to a work camp where you will probably die. Meanwhile a neighbor girl falls in love with a young German private. The private's officers become aware of this and notify the German Gestapo. The Gestapo blackmails the girl, telling her that unless she reveals the whereabouts of Jews, they will arrest her parents and siblings and send them to a death camp. Is her loyalty to her family or to her neighbors? She reveals that you are harboring the Jewish family. The Gestapo arrives and arrests your entire family and the hidden Jewish family. Your father is tortured for information. Both your father and mother and aunt die in the camps. Two of you cousins are murdered for aiding six Jews, and your sister dies in the camp. You survive because of a book-keeping error by the German staff. Your parents and two siblings and your aunt, and two cousins, and six Jewish neighbors all horribly killed-- because that neighbor girl "slept with a German" even though she knew it was wrong and what it could lead to. Now, how would you feel the day the Allies liberated our town? This scenario played out daily all across Holland for five years. For a taste of those days and times across occupied Europe, I suggest "Schindler's List."

Regulations for the Distinguished/Presidential Unit Citation: 1. It is a unit award. 2. It may be worn as a permanent part of the uniform for everyone assigned/attached to the unit and present for duty at the time of the action for which it is awarded. 3. For soldiers who were not present with the unit during the action, they will also wear the award while they are serving with the unit; when they depart that unit, they will no longer wear the award. Cobb was wrong in telling the replacement to remove the award--they were entitled to wear it. However, Randleman was also wrong: Cobb was present during the invasion and was wounded, the fact that he never made it to the ground notwithstanding. Cobb was entitled to wear it. It should be noted that the Distinguished Unit Citation was "recently" established in 1942, and the specific rules of who-could-wear-what-and-when had undoubtedly not trickled-down to the soldiers at the lowest level. For them, who even cared? Having survived the slaughterhouse D-Day, Carentan, Bloody Gulch, etc, it's not like they spent their spare time reading Army awards and decorations regulations after returning to England! Point of the whole matter is that, throughout the series, Cobb is portrayed as an absolute jerk for the sake of dramatic effect, especially in Episode 8. Reality was somewhat different, as he was carrying emotional baggage as being older than most and had already been subject to combat in the Mediterranean.

The Dutch suffered greatly under German Occupation. They were the primary source for food. The last year of the war Germany stripped them of food and energy and thousands died from starvation and exposure. At this point in the war it wasn't surprising for them to take reprisals on collaborators. The soft scene with the child and chocolate is a bit of referral to how they stripped everything from the Dutch.

Did you two recognize a baby-faced James McAvoy as Private Miller? :) You didnt include it in your edit, but during the Eindhoven celebrations, at the bottom left corner of the screen when Talbert is told to move, we can briefly spot an actual Easy Company veteran having a little cameo, the old gentleman with the beret waving a flag. After filming this, one of his best friends started calling him Hollywood. When Lt Brewer gets shot in the neck while they’re approaching the next town, the medic that goes to assist him (and soon gets shot too) is a man called Al Mampre. He’s never directly named in the show, but here’s his recounting of the events. “I lie down next to him. . . and I said, in my best bedside manner, I said, ‘Lieutenant, are you dead? Because if you are, I’m leaving.’ “He croaked out, ‘No, but I don’t know why not.’ I said, ‘OK, I’ll stay with you.’ ” Moments later, Mampre is shot in the leg, but he gives himself a shot of morphine and continues taking care of Brewer.

You're thinking of the Battle of the Bulge referring to the Ardennes forest we're not there yet. But technically that's the same route the Germans surprised the Allies with and took France in 1940.
