Hey Chris, like I just left in my comment for the video...Hey Peter....You really need to tell my business advisor at London small business centre this....I was talking to him about how I am planning to expand my options, horizons and business doing photography into video and creating a TH-cam channel in 2020 based on photography, video making, travel and home stuff (redecorating a new living space, making an area for my photography as an in home studio etc...) and he was like "Oh you should do each of those on all separate channels, then you will have viewers on each channel and if you do it all on one channel it will just seem too cluttered and convoluted blah blah blah" and it really has been bugging me. I tried to use your channel and Becki and Chris's channel, along with Lizzie and Chris's channel but he just wouldn't hear me out. I wish you could come to London and talk some sense into him. I wish Peter or You and Lizzie even or Becki and Chris could come and talk to everyone including the staff at London Small Business Centre (London, Ontario by the way) and show everyone that you can create a TH-cam channel talking about whatever you want on it, no matter what it is, and it not be all convoluted just because you have a variety of content on the channel. I want to create a channel that is very similar in the new year 2020 to yours, Lizzie's, Peter's etc... that has photography and video tutorials but more than that and I have tons of ideas for my channel, I just have to figure out where to start first.
The fact that you can talk about all of this in one single, unedited take just shows how you are truly speaking from the heart and from a passionate and truthful point of view and I really admire that! Thank you so much Peter, keep inspiring all of us!
Definitely the right move man, it's the passion of creating things for yourself that drives you to improve rather than just catering the audience. I love this, and love that you are sharing this. SO many gurus and TH-cam teachers and summits tell you to Niche down and how important it is, and how it's the only way to succeed on TH-cam. I watched a lot of talks at VidSummit about this topic in general. So the fear to niche down, and only create that is strong. This was a good reminder, that this is my channel, and I will create what I love.

100%! I started my channel just to make videos of stuff I do and what I'm about but my friends keep telling me that I need to focus on one part of it to drive traffic. As much as I'd like it to be successful I'd also rather just put out content that I enjoy making about me and the cool stuff my life gives me.
Yeahhh thats not how it works though. I've done the whole do whatever I want videos and my channel died. Just started this new one up for film stuff and I already want to do some like financial advice stuff but I'm still gonna tie it in to film so it stays related. Well gonna try to anyway!

I could care less about wallets or leather goods. But if Peter makes a video about wallets, I'll watch it. Not for the wallet. But because I like Peter. This channel inspires and motivates me, whether I pick up my camera, or a welder. I know this it's absolutely ridiculous... I've never met Peter, but for some odd reason, I feel like we are friends.

I'm so glad creators can have the courage to turn towards making what they want to make. I know it can be quite difficult to switch from one thing to another as you know you want to do it, but the fear of disapproval of all the people that have supported you is the thing keeping you from doing that. I think it's that perceived disappointment that people think will come if you don't make everyone happy, is the thing that keeps people from actually doing what they want to, in every way, not just TH-cam.

This resonated with me a lot. I'm a small youtuber and everyone's been saying to niche down. I've niched down to some degree, but still make videos on topics I enjoy. Because that's what I like doing, and no one should take away your creative freedom.
This right here. Sure, he made me want to pursue my hobby for camera more, but I also love just seeing his stuff and what he does, even without camera and video stuff.
There has never been a truer thing said. 6-8 months ago, I had little genuine interest in photography and just randomly had a Peter McKinnon video recommended while I was in the middle of a random video chain on TH-cam. First impression was that this guy was so interesting and fun to watch because of the energy he has. I've been watching his stuff ever since then and I think a lot of it is because he just does what he wants and doesn't put himself in a box. I'm also getting a camera soon and I'm hoping to get a drone next year so I can start putting some of the stuff I've learnt from his videos to use. It's kind of weird but sometimes you just run into things that have a hugely profound effect on you as a person and Peter has been one of those things for me.
This is something I deal with often in my own community. I try to branch out and mix things up, but straying even slightly outside the scope of what people subbed for, and it fails. 109k subs and some videos struggle to hit 3k views because it is "different". People dont like different. I personally like seeing variety. Keep up the good work PM!

I've been through a similar situation when I started out. Not getting "enough" views and subs was making me sad. One simple realization broke this cycle, it was that I'm a filmmaker, and wether or not I turned out to be successful in TH-cam is irrelevant. I do this for myself now. Thanks Peter :)

I have had the same thougts about my own channel and videos I create and how to make different types of content match. My friend put it well: “If you don't feel comfortable with being put in a box then don't go in the box.” I guess everybody is struggling to allow themselves to create different types of content and not be so afraid of what others think.

This resonated with me a lot. I'm a small youtuber and everyone's been saying to niche down. I've niched down to some degree, but still make videos on topics I enjoy. Because that's what I like doing, and no one should take away your creative freedom.

This right here. Sure, he made me want to pursue my hobby for camera more, but I also love just seeing his stuff and what he does, even without camera and video stuff.
There has never been a truer thing said. 6-8 months ago, I had little genuine interest in photography and just randomly had a Peter McKinnon video recommended while I was in the middle of a random video chain on TH-cam. First impression was that this guy was so interesting and fun to watch because of the energy he has. I've been watching his stuff ever since then and I think a lot of it is because he just does what he wants and doesn't put himself in a box. I'm also getting a camera soon and I'm hoping to get a drone next year so I can start putting some of the stuff I've learnt from his videos to use. It's kind of weird but sometimes you just run into things that have a hugely profound effect on you as a person and Peter has been one of those things for me.

This is something I deal with often in my own community. I try to branch out and mix things up, but straying even slightly outside the scope of what people subbed for, and it fails. 109k subs and some videos struggle to hit 3k views because it is "different". People dont like different. I personally like seeing variety. Keep up the good work PM!
This video is so inspirational to me as someone who is trying to launch a brand and business. My interests go far beyond photography and cinematography, and I really want to include that in my brand. Thank you for making this video and validating my desire to incorporate my other passions into a predominantly photo/video oriented business!

I love creating graphic design projects as well as stumbling through making videos. I’ve been wrestling with myself in my head about what I want to do more; either continue with graphics or start doing video. But you helped me realize the simple answer:
Just create. Do both. Do it all.

I've been through a similar situation when I started out. Not getting "enough" views and subs was making me sad. One simple realization broke this cycle, it was that I'm a filmmaker, and wether or not I turned out to be successful in TH-cam is irrelevant. I do this for myself now. Thanks Peter :)

All my life I've been into photos and videos but haven't really tried diving into it that much because here in the Philippines, it doesn't seem like a job anyone could actually make a living out of. Anyways, the moment I stumbled across your channel three years ago, I've been inspired to make videos again!! I even started uploading some of my own vlogs too! The format is a bit like yours, but I'm still on the progress of learning to find my own style. I have been to Toronto a few years ago. Hope to meet you someday when I visit the place again!

I have had the same thougts about my own channel and videos I create and how to make different types of content match. My friend put it well: “If you don't feel comfortable with being put in a box then don't go in the box.”
I guess everybody is struggling to allow themselves to create different types of content and not be so afraid of what others think.
