I remember where I was, when I first heard this. I was a Soviet Communication Trooper serving in East Germany back in 1986, stationed in the Soviet embassy in East Berlin. Gorbachev announced Glasnost and Perestroika, my wife and children were traveling the different republics on a long vacation, it really seemed like things were getting better, it looked as though life started to have hope. I was standing outside, when I heard a catchy tune, and and the unforgettable voice of Katy Perry, blasting out of the tinny speakers of a well taken care of Trabant 601. I thought to myself - wow, what is this song? I had brought a west German radio inside the embassy and managed to find a pop radio station after some time. The song came on quite often!
It’s almost uncanny how much this sounds like a real song released between ‘85 and ‘87. The bombastic-yet-artificial brass fanfare, the sickly-sweet keyboard twinkle, and the ABC-esque bass guitar sound almost _exactly_ like the sounds of the Stock Aitken Waterman production team.

I was a college student back in 1984 at the University of Miami, and this song had JUST come out! The summer Olympics were almost upon us, and everything was perfect! One warm night in late June, my roommate and I were in Coconut Grove on the beach celebrating her sister’s 18th birthday… and that’s when I laid eyes on Albert, my now-husband! This song was playing the moment our eyes met, and within 8 months we were married! You can bet we played this at our wedding!!! 6 kids and 4 grandkids later, me and my Big Al are still together! Sadly, Katy Perry would be gone too soon. I’ll never forget the magazines and papers that day, when she died in a plane crash in Colorado in the winter of 2000, at the young age of 42. America and the rest of the world lost an icon that day. My eldest daughter is named after Katy all because of this song! RIP
Funny, several days ago I was walking, while listening to Pop radio and then all of a sudden, a song "She's American" by the band "1975's" starts playing. Never heard about them before, but by god, it was a breath of fresh air, the song sounded exactly like it was made in 80ies. That was a very pleasant surprise :D
