@@littlestars7537 hey, u don't wanna put sugar or salt in there. That may cause more dehydration because salt is very dehidrating. Sugar may also cause healf problems. X
When looking for a suitable bowl for your hamster, looking for a ‘sauce’, ‘soy sauce’ or ‘condiment’ bowl can help you out. :) I had trouble finding small enough bowls for a while but using those keywords gave me some good results.

Dear Erin My hamster Fluffy died peacefully yesterday evening due to old age aged 1year 10months..it was a terrible feeling😭..but he lived a long life, and I'm happy that I could give him proper and the best care I could! This is a thank you letter- Thank you so so much for creating such amazing and informative content!!☺ It is just because of you and Victoria that I could give Fluffy the proper care he deserved! Thank you so much Erin!💕 ~love from India💕
I have had too many water bottles fail on me in the past that I no longer trust them. Mice can become dehydrated much too quickly, I don't want to risk it. Now I only use water bowls that I put up on an easily accessable shelf so they do not fill it up with bedding. For very young mice as well as elderly and/or sickly mice, I use small, shallow bowls so they can drink comfortably and no one will accidentally drown.
Your hamster is PRECIOUS! My goodness, I think he's one of the cutest hamsters I have seen in awhile, although Victoria Rachel's hamsters are extremely cute as well!!
Just wanted to say: I do use a water bowl for my Robo dwarf and he does use it...I’ve only seen him use it once but that was during the day and he is nocturnal. It’s a great idea because it’s more natural and hygienic but my hamster is very clumsy so I do have to change it twice a day due to bedding getting into it! :3
I switched to a bowl, but left the bottle in just in case he preferred the bottle...he drinks a lot more now using the bowl and I ended up just removing the bottle because it was clearly not being touched and was becoming a waste of my filtered water. I also found he prefered a solid and colored bowl vs a clear/see through one. Not sure if it just made him see the water clearer but it was interesting to observe!
There are tiny bowls sold for barbecue- sauces . Glass tea- light holders are also perfect in size and often quite heavy so the hamster can sit on the edge - like they often like to do - without tipping it over ( for dwarfs at least it's a good fitting alternative) Eventually use at least 2 bowls or one bowl and a bottle so if one leaks or gets spilled they have another "emergency" source . Or just provide both sources to let them get used to it ( if they come from a pet store that had only bottles) and also watch what they prefer.
the velcro holding my hams waterbottle fell due to her climbing it(and it being cheap tbh). i wasnt able to get more for a bit so i tried switching her to a bowl... big mistake she apparently liked storing food under the waterbottle and i just somehow never noticed, so her waterbowl turned into a food storage facility. having to "take away" her food every day made her start storing food in her wheel because she didnt feel safe enough keeping it somewhere else i guess it was a happy day for both of us when she got her bottle back
Great video! My hamster came from a rescue shelter, where he fell out of his cage one day and onto a tiled floor. He 'knocked out' his front teeth (I assume he broke them rather than knocking them out completely) and had to use a bowl to drink from as the couldn't manage with a bottle. Over a year later and he still drinks from a bowl!
A great video! I have considered giving my hamsters water bowls, rather than water bottles before, but I always think bowls can be tipped up so easy, or the water can be soaked up with substrate, if the bowl gets buried underneath it. Where as bottles are securely attached to the cage, so I feel these ensure water is available 100% of the time. Reducing the risk of dehydration. I like how bowls are way more natural, but I don't think they are very practical.
got a new waterbottle for my chonk because his other one was leaking. the stupid bottle doesnt disperse water almost entirely so i gotta go get him a bowl asap. thank u for this. IF YOURE USING A BOTTLE MAKE SURE IT WORKS!!! I was lucky to spot it fast enough with how hard he was struggling with it
I changed to using both a bowl and water bottle after I had a ball bearing get stuck in a water bottle once, preventing the water flow (thankfully my hamster at the time got frustrated with it and began chewing the spout loudly to try and get the water out, which woke me up and alerted me to the issue pretty quickly so I could give her a water bowl instead). This way I knew there was always a secondary access to water if the water bottle failed for whatever reason. I found my last two hamsters that I did this for (both Syrians) would use them both perfectly fine. Usually they'd use whichever was closest to them or easiest to get to at the time.
My robo was struggling to get enough water from his bottle. I’ve since started using bowls and he enjoys it so much more. He still has the bottle, but he’s getting old and having something closer to his height seems better for him!
i've been looking for a less hassle water option for my little Custard plop because it's always such a process to take her cage off of my self, fill the bottle, spend five minutes forcing the springs back onto the wire and putting it back up, thank you for helping me!💗
Question do hamsters have a garbage spot, ours hordes his seeds near his nest and far away on other side of the cage it stores or dumps lol the hard pellet stuff from the mix
My dwarf hamster is very used to drinking from a bottle, but I wanted to use a bowl, like I do with my Syrian, because they’re easier to clean and they won’t have as much residue/bacteria left in them. I just have him both options, so there was the bottle with water and also a bowl. He was confused at first, but he ended up understanding the concept of the water bowl and used both. He’s now using his water bowl only, which is good for me because I can sleep without as much noise from the bottle and also good for him. Unrelated, but I wanted to share the experience nevertheless
This is a great video! I prefer using water bowls for all of my pets, because I find that more natural and secure. Thank you for making this video, and letting people know that there are alternative ways to do things. 🤗
Great video about water bowls! I like to use water bowls with my hamsters, I find them easier to deal with, bowls are easy to clean and it's easy to change out the water everyday. My hamsters love them, and have no problem using them. :D
I use bowls for both hams and they love it. I rescued a ham who used the bottle so I gave her the option and she immediately took to the bowl. I also find them easier to clean. If you worry about them knocking it over just put a small piece of velcro and make sure it's on a hard surface.
👍 it took my hamster some time to learn to drink from a bowl, but once he did it seems sooo much better. It was breaking my heart listening to him try to get water from a water bottle. Thanks for the video and helpful info!
Although water bottles can be easier for us owners (as in it can allow us to be lazy because the water normally doesn't need to changed daily with bottles), I definitely think bowls are better and more natural. Getting the bottle at the correct angle is difficult, and I can't see how it would be possible for a hamster to drown unless you have a ridiculously sized bowl or your hamster has special needs. I originally used bottles because my boys kept getting substrate in their bowls, but now I've set up the cage in a way that makes that impossible. I recommend anyone who has that same problem to invest in some sort of platform or shelf.
I use both because "Nature" will say the bowl is more natural and for "Nurture" the bottle is more natural (as its only used a bottle it's whole life until now). And as I may travel soon, I feel better knowing there are two diff sources of water
Our two had bottles, but one had eye problems. On a whim we added bowls and the eye problems cleared up (dehydration maybe) and he stopped using the bottle. She is still 75/25 but had no problems before.
When I introduced my past hamster a water bowl, she didnt see the water (at least I dont think so) and just jumped in, she had a little shock at first, but it didnt happen again! Water bowls are really safe!
I replaced my bottle for a waterbowl about half a year ago, because with my new cage it is kind of hard to attach a waterbottle to it. A waterbowl is also a lot more natural. I have honestly never had any problems with a water bowl. These myths seriously made me laugh out loud, because I provide every new animal I get with a water bowl in case they don't know how to drink from a bottle. By the way, I believe that a waterbowl could be lifesaving to a hamster with wettail. Unfortunately, my first hamster died of wettail, cause she left her nest too soon when I bought her. She had never drinked anything while she was with me. Unfortunately the waterbowl couldn't save her anymore, cause she was already too weak.
I started using a bowl a few weeks ago, because I wasn't sure if his bottle was working right. I scatter feed and i tipped the bowl once when moving his cage, and accidentally grew a few pieces of grass. He enjoyed eating them lol.
I got a little tealight holder to try using as a bowl, little Samwise lost interest after a bit. 😂 The adorable thing is, he drank with his tiny hands!
I wanted to know if my hamster was more comfortable using a bowl so I got a water bottle cap from used bottles I’ve been collecting for my castle hamster play pen and she was drinking away! :)
I’m thinking about using a water bowl for my hamster, but I’m worried about him stepping/falling into it. The water bowl I got for him is 4 centimeters in diameter and 2 centimeters tall. Is this a good size and how can I prevent him from stepping in it?
This may sound strange but can I use a shot glass that has never been used for a water bowl, like if I put a rock in the bottom so my ham doesn’t climb in. I have a shot glass that a local store gave me but no one in my family drinks so I have no use for it
My hamster refuses to use a bottle. She was given the option of both a bottle and bowl when she came home ( and she still does have the option ) but she just never uses it. As long as she stays hydrated, I am happy either way :D
I found that my hamster prefers to drink from a bowl, before I switched her completely to a bowl I had both in her cage so that if she didn't understand the bowl as she had been using a bottle for about 6 months she still had the option of a bottle however she always drank from her bowl and not the bottle this was after the shock of there being water in a bowl, the first day I put it in her cage she stuck her nose in the bowl and it made her jump 2 seconds later she was drinking from it x I honestly would suggest using a bowl over a bottle it's more comfortable for them x
I also decided to switch my hamster over to a bowl because she would get really frustrated when drinking water from the bottle and always break it. She seems a lot happier with it now ☺
@@SomethingAnimal also what do you know about hamsters and heart palpitations my past hamster and my current one (6 months old) have both had them I researched it but couldn't find anything
For an elderly hamster you kind of should use a bowl because it exercises the mouth muscles more. For a young lively hamster a bowl or a bottle will be appropriate, as a bottle is a bit harder to drink from a bowl is easier and makes it seem more wild. This is my opinion and you don't have to take this advice. I personally use a bottle. The thing about a bottle is if the lay in the water the oil on there skin could come off which will harm them. Bottles are a bit safer but they are both decently safe. Don't get a deep bowl especially for baby's as the will drown.
**IMPORTANT PLEASE READ** Uhhh... right now I’m visiting my Uncle and Aunt in Montreal, Canada. And we went to adopt a parakeet because he needed to get another parakeet because he needed another male. So we went to the adoption thing, and got the parakeet. A couple hours later, we’re at a mall, and there is a pet store in it. So I went in thinking, “What’s the worst that can happen?” Oh. My. Goodness. The conditions in there were horrible. There were 2 dwarf hamsters in a tiny habitrail cage and they were living IN THEIR OWN FILTH. They didn’t have a wheel and they were both very obviously stressed. I was so taken aback. They had a Rabbit and a Guinea pig in the same cage, multiple rats in a glass aquarium, multiple Syrian hamsters just stacked up in the back, and it over all was just a very bad neglect situation. A lot of the hamsters looked sick, and they were all so tiny! They Syrians they were selling were the size of mice! It was honestly traumatizing. They had a lot of Parakeets in there also. They were also kept in really bad conditions. I was so shocked, I couldn’t comprehend anything for a half an hour. I was just in shock. Is there anything I can do? I understand that these are just temporary setups and that this is an independently owned pet shop, but that isn’t an excuse for these horrible conditions. I mean, the rats were living in a glass aquarium and the dwarf hamsters were living in their own filth. That is pure neglect. I want to help these animals, but I don’t know how. I’m only a sixth grader and my uncle keeps making excusing for this pet store. Can you please help me? :(
I got rid of the water bottle 2 days after seeing how horrible it is. Ever since, ive used a little sauce dip bowl to give my dwarf hamster fresh cold water ❤️ he drinks ALOT from it every day ❤️ i change it out about twice a day
I've recently switched 2 of my hamsters over to water dishes, River my Russian and Bamboo my Robo have taken to them right away; Mochi my (maybe) Winter White, however seemed very confused so I still use a bottle for him, he's almost 2 and a half now so I don't want to make any big changes for him
Unfortunately today my senior hamster drowned. He fell in and passed away. He was quite old and I was expecting to find him soon curled up asleep. Unfortunately he was frail and the dish was deep. I can’t help but feel a sense of guilt. I love you Peaches.❤️🥺💫 Rest In Peace ❤️
hey erin! i have a robo and i’ve had her for almost a month now. i’ve been going very slow with her taming process, but she’s still scared of me. i can open her tank/cage and she’s perfectly fine with that, but she’s still scared of my hand. any tips? 💓
I had a Syrian hamster and he was hard to tame too . I suggest put a some seed on your hand and place ur hand in the cage . I that doesn’t work try to just hold a seed in your fingers and see if your hamster will take it be really gentle . And I recommend you to rub your hands with the bedding so your hamster gets used to your smell . But dont worry some hamsters can’t be tamed .
Roborovskis can take many months and an enormous amount of patience to tame, so it's normal to not see much progress with them in such a short amount of time. Although it can be discouraging, as long as you keep persevering she will eventually begin to trust you, the fact that she is comfortable with you opening up her cage is a good sign. Keep reinforcing your hands as a positive thing by offering her favourite foods on your open palm, even if she doesn't come towards you right away just getting her used to your hands being around will make a different and she'll get the courage eventually :)
my hamster lou (a campbell dwarf) has always used a bowl lol, i didnt even realize some people had gripes with them until a few months after I got him. idk i had so many issues trying to get my rats a bottle that worked that I ended up switching them to a bowl and Ive never bought a bottle since
Hey do you have a video on if tunnels for Syrian hamsters are safe or do you recommend any tunnels for a Syrian hamster I'm trying to connect a natural incologer with a bin cage
Thank you I was lookin if it was healthy because i'm getting a hamster and I was worried of everything because it's my first time getting him, again thsnk you, hello from me and future Yuki🥺❤️
Problem is, I’m fairly certain my hammy would get bedding in his water while I’m away during the day and not have any water accessible until I’m home in the evening
I worry about this too, it's one of the reason I use two bowls and a bottle. So on the chance that something happens to both of the bowls he still has a reliable water source :)
I have a pretty big water bowl and a Syrian because she would climb up her bottle but I have no problems of her sitting in it or drowning she has no interest in her water bowl unless taking a drink
Has anyone ever heard that a dwarf hamster being able to drink plenty of water and letting it out away from the water bottle? I clean my smallest little albino dwarfs cage and with a few minutes she is drinking more than 4 adults. But then all her bedding is soaked. I have tried everything so any help would be appreciated.
I have a question.. My elderly hamster has started to smell a bit funky . It's not really noticeable, I can only smell it if I bring him up to my nose a sniff. Is this something that happens to all hamsters when they get older or should I be concerned and take him to the vet?
WHAT? Hamsters won't know how to use a bowl and die ? That would be like a hamster that couldn't recognise a puddle or some rain water collected in some leaves in the wild. They go look for food and water in a new territory. They find a water source. They smell it. They eventually observe it further at first, they try it, they drink it. "Problem" solved. A hamster unable to recognise a standing, clean, water source and make the connection to drink from it would be unable to survive anyways....
Thinking of switching to water bowl because my syrian hammy, (Himawari) likes to walk under her water bottle. And when she does she pushes up the little ball in it and gets her coat wet. 😅
I gave my hamster a water bowl and it's been a week. He still continues to use his water bottle. Should I remove the water bottle or just continue to let him use it. He still has shown no interest at all in the bowl and it's just taking up space.
I want to switch to bowls for all 4 of my dwarf hamsters but one of them is a Robovoski and I’m worried to use it with her and since she’s so tiny would it be alright?
I’ve changed my hamsters bottle to a bowl because I think it’s a natural drinking for him! And it seems to work best 🥰
How did you transition your hammy?

She seems a lot happier with it now ☺
That one person who disliked this video, why? It's just a cute vid of a hamster!
Cat people most likely
Mikhaela McKenzie yeah too cute and cuter than them
What do you use as a bowl Erin?
U can buy little bowls where to put candles . That’s what I use . And she said it in the video too
I'm using tea light holders, they're the perfect size :)
ErinsAnimals thanks I thought it was I just wasn't sure because of the colour I use a tea light holder as a bowl but mines a see through one
I have a Syrian and i use a bottle because he tends to carry bedding from the other side of the cage to his nest. I'm scared if he gets bedding inside
**IMPORTANT PLEASE READ**
Uhhh... right now I’m visiting my Uncle and Aunt in Montreal, Canada.
Ever since, ive used a little sauce dip bowl to give my dwarf hamster fresh cold water ❤️ he drinks ALOT from it every day ❤️ i change it out about twice a day
Thank you, super helpful❤️
My hamster likes bowls a lot more and it's SO hard to put the bottle in the right position so the hamster doesn't have neck problems.
hey erin! i have a robo and i’ve had her for almost a month now. i’ve been going very slow with her taming process, but she’s still scared of me. i can open her tank/cage and she’s perfectly fine with that, but she’s still scared of my hand. any tips?
ErinsAnimals alright! thank u so much ♡
I use both and she takes a sip from one and then a sip from the other and then a sip from one etc it’s very cute!
my hamster lou (a campbell dwarf) has always used a bowl lol, i didnt even realize some people had gripes with them until a few months after I got him. idk i had so many issues trying to get my rats a bottle that worked that I ended up switching them to a bowl and Ive never bought a bottle since
I have a bowl and a bottle in my hammys cage! Just thought it was the best thing for her!
Now can you do a video showing or giving ideas on how to transition hammys from bottles to bowls?
You don't need to transition them really. But if you're concerned, put the bowl in with the bottle so they can get use to it
Hey do you have a video on if tunnels for Syrian hamsters are safe or do you recommend any tunnels for a Syrian hamster I'm trying to connect a natural incologer with a bin cage
I use a bowl and it works just fine Nd I like it better then the bottle because my hammy moves it around and then can’t drink correctly
Thank you I was lookin if it was healthy because i'm getting a hamster and I was worried of everything because it's my first time getting him, again thsnk you, hello from me and future Yuki🥺❤️
My Syrian would do everything in his power to tip a water bowl over so although I would like to start using on, I haven't
My hamster has so much trouble drinking out of her water bottle but I’m scared her bowl is to big
I tried the water bowl. But my lovely dum-dum hammy kept trying to bury her water bowl for “safekeeping”.
I have both a bowl and bottle, but my ham seems to like the bowl much more. She will still drink out of the bottle but not nearly as much.
To be honest everyone is saying how good bowls are, then there's my hamster who is scared of water!♡
I wish my gerbils could use bowls, but rest assured - if it's a new thing they WILL mess with it, tip over, or burry it lmao.
Is soil that added calcium safe for hamster?
I have a question..
My elderly hamster has started to smell a bit funky . It's not really noticeable, I can only smell it if I bring him up to my nose a sniff. Is this something that happens to all hamsters when they get older or should I be concerned and take him to the vet?
Maybe he can't clean himself as well as he used to? Not sure what to do though, sorry.
@@deb13292 thank you for replying!!!
Do you have any video on diy chewing toy because my hamster has developed a really big set of theeth 😢
The reason I think they should have a bottle is no drowning spilling and much saffer
Am I right to think that all of this is the same for mice as well?
can I use a small ramekin dish for my hamster?
Thanks, will use bowl, because I see it naturally than the drip bottle
I tried Luna with a water bowl, she didn't take to it at all. So I decided to stick with a water bottle.
Is it ok to use a water dish and bottle at the same time in a hamster cage
I wanted to give my hamster a bowl but I was scared so I watch a lot of video so now I am going to change it to a bowl
I want to switch to bowls for all 4 of my dwarf hamsters but one of them is a Robovoski and I’m worried to use it with her and since she’s so tiny would it be alright?
Tea light holders work for any hamster even roborovski :)
Yay I love new videos
Is having a water bowl the size of 5 cm by 5 cm and 3.5 height good for a dwarf?
Also, what about mice? My mice always fill the water bowls with bedding. 🙄 so irritating lol
Great information, he's soo cute.
His wheel is different?? What’s up with that
