Clarke Quay is a historical riverside quay in Singapore, located within the Singapore River Planning Area. The quay is situated upstream from the mouth of the Singapore River and Boat Quay. It was named after Sir Andrew Clarke, Singapore’s second Governor and Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1873 to 1875, who played a key role in positioning Singapore as the main port for the Malay states of Perak, Selangor, and Sungei Ujong.
In its heyday, Clarke Quay was a bustling commercial center where barge lighters would transport goods upstream to warehouses. However, with the relocation of cargo services to a new modern facility in Pasir Panjang, Clarke Quay fell silent. The government then cleaned up the Singapore River and its environment from 1977 to 1987.
Today, Clarke Quay is a vibrant precinct renowned for its plethora of restaurants, cafes, and clubs. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering a wide range of activities and attractions4. From shopping malls to river cruises, there’s something for everyone4. It’s also easily reachable via MRT.
The area has been carefully developed to preserve its historical value. New buildings are required to complement the historical character of the area, and certain old buildings have been restored. This blend of old and new makes Clarke Quay a unique and dynamic part of Singapore’s urban landscape. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a meal by the river, embark on a river cruise, or simply soak in the atmosphere, Clarke Quay offers a truly unique Singaporean experience.
