I believe the pronunciation they use is British English. I have only ever pronounced it as kway in the US. And if someone said “kee” without any context I would not know they weren’t talking about keys. lol
To be fair, in British English it is pronounced “MIS-cha-vus” and in American English it is “miss-CHEE-vee-us”. Similar deal with words like “Al-loo-MIN-ee-um” and “uh-LOOM-ih-num”.
I believe that is from a spelling error that is very, very common. Very often the word is mis-spelled as mischievious with an extra i near the end. Or even more likely it is spelled wrong due to us mis-pronouncing it.

In the the UK there are multiple places with Quay in the name: South Quay, West India Quays, Surrey Quays etc. I don't actually know what it means though so... 🤷🏾♀️🤣

Wouldn’t need to persay unless you lived in an area with them. I grew up in the desert and know what it is but couldn’t tell you the difference with other like, water ports , wharfs and things. I suppose a quay in my mind is smaller. But yeah LOL

@@L.l.I.ia_N I get where you're coming from, but I think it's more complicated than just being "right" or "wrong." Truthfully, yeah most American English teachers will correct you if you pronounce it as mischiveous rather than mischievous, however, colloquially, it is very common to hear it both ways. Also, as someone who has lived in different parts of the USA as well as the UK, I do think dialect does have an effect here in which case it would be very difficult to claim that one pronunciation is "better" or more "correct" than another.

They actually picked some pretty difficult English words. Some are just difficult to pronounce no matter what, but others are just pronounced different than what you'd expect by reading them for the first time.

Yep your right but i rather want her like that , sounds real and cute. As long as you can understand most common english words is fine. You don’t need to be fluent to make good money. My friend and my brother has a heavy accent and im not 100% fluent in english and we all are engineers , accountants and pharmacies.

The Mischievous one was weird. They were technically both right, but if we’re talking about AMERICAN English than he’s right!! The translation voice was British English.

Personally I believe that people say it however they were taught it and however they see it. I'm British and I pronounce it as mis-chee-vee-ous like some people r saying Americans do but there are some people who don't it could also depend on your environment and accents but either way it means the same thing no matter how it's pronounced which makes it Good
The way that he said it is a way that some people say it, but it is not the correct way to say it. It's like saying "simular" instead of "similar".

Heejae is very humble, she keeps saying her English is not good yet she speaks and has many of the COnstant sounds down very well.

It's funny that they added "colloquial" because it and dialect explain why both Heejae and Byungeun were right when pronouncing "Mischievous". Many English words can be pronounced differently depending on the region someone is from. I have heard words like mischievous, crayon, milk, egg, yolk, and even toilet pronounced differently depending on who is speaking. Some of the words they included like Quay and Maneuverability aren't colloquial, so many Americans probably wouldn't use or recognize them. A lot of English pronunciation comes from the way we form our mouths to make the sounds. It's why Heejae was having trouble pronouncing Squirrel because she was trying to roll her r's, which isn't the way a native speaker would try and form the sound. And at the beginning of Squirrel it would be more like the way we form the letter "w". Either way they did a good job considering neither of them is actively learning English.
Lots of English-speakers do pronounce Mischievous like "Mis-Chee-Vee-Ous" so he I'd say they were both right on that one. And I definitely think Byungeum was closer on some of the earlier ones than Heejae but he kept getting hit instead 😂

@@taoist32 No, I think it's a question of British vs American spelling. Living in the US I've only ever seen it spelled as "maneuverability". So it depends on what part of the world you learned your English spelling in.
The word "knight" is always a tricky one for ESL speakers. Keep that in the works if you're planning on doing another one of these. Love your videos!
I started laughing so hard when they pronounced "Squirrel" as "scrr". English words are difficult to pronounce because there are so many rules of pronunciation. I love that they were willing to try and Byuengeun used one of techniques in reading by looking for a word that he recognized within the word itself.
Heejae actually said colloquial earlier for the word sixth, although in Korean, but then asks what the word is when it comes up lol. Maybe try words like Dough, Rough, Sought, Thought, Sugar ones that are pronounced quite different then their spelling. I think videos like this are good to help learn English, they can relax and have a little fun with it and not have to worry about being embarrassed if they say something wrong to an actual English speaking person. The best way to learn it is by doing it, you can read the words all day long but if you don't speak them you won't learn them. My advice if you want to learn English, especially pronunciation is to go talk with an English speaking person, most will be more than happy to help you out, and can give you tips to help you with your pronunciation. Just don't be embarrassed to make a mistake, it's expected because English isn't your 1st language and people you talk to know this, if they correct you it's not to embarrass or put you down for trying, they are only doing it to help you to say things properly. Just a little tip, try sticking to 1 type of English speaking person, American, British, Australian, etc... are different.

I wrote out the pronunciation of these words as close as I could get with Korean characters to help anyone having a hard time ^^ This isn't perfect because some sounds just don't transfer between English and Korean, but these are very close.
Sixth - Honestly, there's no way to write it in Korean because there's no sound like "TH." Put the tip of your tongue in between your teeth with just a tiny bit of space between your teeth and tongue, then blow air lightly out of your mouth. That is how you create the "TH" sound. 스잌+th

maneuverability - 만우버라빌리타
squirrel - 스크워를
mischievous - 미스치비어스 / 미스츠버스 Both are correct! It depends on the person and the place they're from. I actually say it the way Byungeun does.

You guys did that good, I'm German and the English word "squirrel" means in German "Eichhörnchen" 😂 or when you have to say "Brötchen", that means "bun" in English.

Also, while we're on the subject of language, why is romanized Korean (Korean transcribed in English alphabet) COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from what the words actually sound like? Looking at you "tapoki".
It’s usually due to our phonics being difficult to accurately translate into the proper pronunciation in Korean. There are a lot of movements within the mouth and tongue that you can’t translate.
such as saying the word banana, which in Korean it is still romanised as Ba-na-na (바나나) but the pronunciation is different, it’s more like “bah-Nah-nah) but even that isn’t what it’s fully sounds like because of small differences within placements of tongue on the back of the teeth in Korean makes the n softer….
there isn’t really any accurate equivalent is what I’m trying to get at.

Honestly, both ways of saying mischievous are acceptable. I personally say it mischievious and that's fine. It's like caramel, some people say CARA-mel and some people say CAR-mel. I pronounce it the latter way, I don't care if there's an A right there, that's not how I say it and that's okay.
This was fun! And yeah, some of these words are hard even for Native speakers. The only time I've come across the word "quay" was in a book and I had to look up both the meaning and the pronunciation. I knew it would be a tough one!

The 'l' in yolk (and folk) is traditionally silent, although it would be unsurprising if some English speakers have started pronouncing it based on the spelling.

Question, do you know if they are actually reading the English alphabet or how they’re reading the words? Because if I was given a foreign alphabet that I hadn’t studied I would have no clue
@@witherwizard1166 They have their own language which is 한글 (Hangul) so no they don't typically read the English alphabet, although most can (as they were taught English pronunciation in school growing up and it's everywhere-but not understand it obviously).

Whew these are some tricky words! Both Byungeun and Heejae deserve lots of respect for taking on this challenge. Honestly, they did very well. Definitely much better than my first attempt to pronounce these same words lol
I'm American and I pronounce 'mischievous' the same way Byungeun does here. (: English words have many different pronunciations around the world so they're actually doing a really great job. Don't be afraid of English, even 1st language English speakers don't match their pronunciations and we can understand each other (for the most part). If you don't believe me compare American English with British English, then compare British with Scottish English. They're next to each other on the same continent yet their pronunciations are drastically different lol
"Manoeuverability" was tricky, because it was the Canadian/British spelling.
In the States, we spell it: "Maneuverability", without the letter "o".

For any non-native English speaking person, there are multiple ways to say or pronounce a lot of words either due to an accent or dialect. We’ll pretty much know what you’re trying to say, so don’t worry and don’t feel stressed. If we repeat the word or say a different word, we’re just trying to clarify. Don’t feel embarrassed, learning another language is difficult.
This proves once again that English is senseless in terms of pronunciation.
To be fair....a lot of English words are derived from Latin, French, and old English. Blame the Europeans! 😆 jk

not bad guys! You did much better with these words than I would with Korean language, of that I am sure. Honestly some of these words are not used much and a couple I never heard anyone use. I think one of the hardest words to get right in English is "Worcestershire" which we use here for the name of a particular sauce created originally in England. Look that one up and see what you get because I'm really not sure myself, when I say it I say it very fast to cover up lol. Anyway great video as always, have a good day!
