    Hi, wondering how to work out the surface area of a roof like that?

      @@gregvancom Hi, I've only just seen his reply! Sorry, this link isn't for a circular roof - just checking if there is another circular roof video? I'd love to make a gazebo this summer and your videos are great - many thanks!

    This is a fabulous design idea. But how do you calculate the height of the curved beam?

    • @gregvancom

      I put your suggestion on my list of videos to be made.

    That's very smart. That's also something you don't see everyday anymore. Smart framers! I'm thinking the spring of the top of the beam would be determined by the stand height difference of the hip and King common. Divided by the number of rafters of half the span? With that you could either figure out a radius or a rise per run?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never seen it built, but figured it out with the computer aided design program I use. You could definitely do a little more math, but I think it would be easier to position the first four hips and simply measure the rest.

    Great vid
    Would you do the same if the sturcture shape was a decagon?
    Would the same work for a reciprocal roof as thats round also?
    Thanks

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't see why it wouldn't work for a roof with 10 equal sides or the reciprocal roof, but please keep in mind that a structural engineer might need to be contacted to verify construction assembly methods for something like this.

    Does anyone know how you would go about getting the measurement for the common rafters? It’s raised so how would you get it in the center like the hip rafters? Thanks for any help

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No hips here, use the gable rafter formula and the span will be from the outside most of the time.

      @@gregvancom first I want to thank you for making these videos. Second thanks for responding to my comment. I won’t bug you with a million questions, I’m just having trouble understanding something. At the beginning of the videos you set 4 hip rafters. Then you set the common rafters with the double cheek cut on top of the rounded board. Here is my question, is there a different technique to measuring for the common rafter since it’s been raised? It is sitting higher than the hip rafters since it’s sitting on the rounded board. Thanks for any help and for your time.

    • @bb-phantom3324
      @bb-phantom3324 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not higher because the rounded board is notched to make the common an hip rafters level. I think. Lol
