Definite Shinobi feel to this. The Genesis/Mega Drive was always a capable machine, back in the original heyday, it was limited by the storage medium (the price of the cartridges). They started with 4 Megabit carts with the 32 (4 Megabyte) and 40 Megabit (5 Megabyte) carts being the maximum. The NEO GEO did not impose those restrictions with its hardware, always promoting those 330 Megabits of storage (41.25 Megabytes, not that every game used the entire space) in their attract screen. Frankly it was amazing what some of the programmers/devs were able to accomplish in porting those huge NEO GEO games to the 16 Bit Sega console.
Backing the roms, hope this will encourage more games of this quality, I think its worth it. Might get Dreamcast physical if they include stickers and stuff near the end.

I'm certain releasing a new 16bit console that clones the SNES or MD but with some simple improvements for graphic and sound capabilities would be a huge hit right now.
since these fan devs made a Sega Dreamcast version of this game and now they are working on the SNK NeoGeo AES and the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis version, I feel that these versions will be closer than we think with probably the NeoGeo AES having some extras but maybe it's too soon to call it so it will be fun to compare the final versions. I really favor the pixel art cutscenes and animations... we know already that Sega MegaDrive started with 4 Megabit ROM cartridge size as the maximum possible due to physical and cost limitations of the year 1988 when the MegaDrive originally launched in Japan however by 1994 to 1995 when the last fully developed official games were being made, the largest ROM sizes reached around 32 Megabit and 40 Megabit for special titles and we found out years later that the largest officially supported ROM size is 64 Megabit which compared to what was physically available in 1988 and what kinds of videogames were made on mere 4 Meg and 8 Meg Cartridges, basically 32 Megs, 40 Megs and 64 Megs are essentially monster sizes so we really do not know what kinds of 2d games could have been possible for example considering how Bare Knuckle 3 aka SoR 3 and Sonic 3 as well as Sonic and Knuckles contained some very FLUID 2d pixel sprite art animation quality as official Sega in house made games plus high color quality on display or the tricks to make it appear like twice the 64 color limit. I do hope that either the fan who was working on a reprogrammed conversion of Arcade Shinobi for Sega MegaDrive manages to complete it as this Shadow Gangs game draws inspiration from both Rolling Thunder arcade and Shinobi arcade versions so we can better compare but apparently that game was being developed over three years ago and the way it's looking those newer conversions are still work in progress too. Watching how the Mega Drive and Genesis progressed was amazing back in the day. I was left amazed every 6 months as a new game would push the console further.
The colour work will be the interesting bit. But I've seen some games pull off some impressive colour pallete work. The Castlevania port is a great example.
@@RetroGamerBoy I can see it use a darker colour theme which is typically what the MD can come out with, however I think inspite of the limited colours the MD had (512 if we are being precise) They can make it work. Castlevania demake works because it naturally had a darker colour scheme. :)
I backed the game, i hope that the megadrive version holds up to the negeo version. I think the neogeo version looks good but not super. That means its possible to get a little bit weaker version with less animations an a little bit weaker soundtrack. But let see what they deliver. The first game was very difficult. But i love the artstyle.... This looks more like an old arcade game than a neogeo game, more like shadow dancer arcade...
I agree it's nothing that I don't think a modern developer could not achieve on the console. It will not be as good but I think it can still look great.

Hi, is this a publicly available demo or is it just available for the Kickstarter backers (and how are you playing it in MAME, is that like a special build you compiled yourself or summat)? I've got the first Shadow Gangs on Steam. Man, I want to love it, but it's got kind of an unbalanced difficulty level, the very first stage feels like you're jumping straight into one of the final stages of the OG Shinobi difficulty-wise.
Shadow Gangs 1 was good a little rough around the edges and the final boss is impossible but it caught the Shinobi essence quite well and had a ton of content. Looking forward to a new one with a little tighter gameplay now they have more experience
While the game looks cool. I'm not gonna back this one. First off I backed to much already I'm losing track. Second the physical Mega Drive version is to expensive. 80 pounds + shipping? Hell no. Any why are the digital versions for the retro systems more expensive than the digital versions on modern systems?

Looks good and inspired by Shinobi, will be interested when it comes out. I love the Neo Geo so much, but have no access to one. I want a consolized MVS and the nice MVS flash cart. But picking the right CMVS is so intimidating, and with just those 2 items you're looking at $1,000+ minimum. Plus the flash cart is always sold out. I still think it's crazy that we get tons of Neo Geo and Dreamcast homebrews, yet PS1 is still left in the dust. The PS1 would be a good home for a game like this, it's more powerful than a Genesis/MegaDrive so we could still enjoy all the colors and layers of parallax scrolling. And PS1 is a million times more accessible than a Neo Geo. One day I'll get my wish. I know right now, more ppl are making their own translations of PS1 games to sell in a jewel case with artwork/longbox like Policenauts and such. But I wanna see all these new games on it, I always comment this, I just can't believe the PS1 is so much harder to make games for than a Dreamcast or Neo Geo game. And the market/demand is there, us PS1 diehards are so readybfor homebrews. Ppl forget how beautiful 2D games were on the console, just cuz Saturn was "the 2D powerhouse" which I love. But there's plenty of 2D games that look and play better on PS1 like Mega Man 8 and X4, or Castlevania SOTN
Part of the attraction could be the underdog / fringe factor. It's more satisfying to make and play new games for less-successful, lesser-known retro platforms like Dreamcast and Neo Geo, than it is to make new games for a console like the PS1 that sold over 100 million units and already has a huge games library.

Watch, one day it's gonna start getting popular if that easy dev tool comes out. I still want homebrews, but also I'd love to see crazy stuff like a Ratchet and Clank 1 de-make(or that Bloodbourne PS1 project). Or perhaps an indie game like Timespinner where they state it's specifically supposed to look and play like a PS1 game(Kickstarter backers even had an option to get a copy that looked like a big PS1 jewel case). It'd be beyond awesome to release an actual PS1 copy for harcore fans. Like how tons of the Sega new games get released on modern consoles, PC, and also get a Sega cartridge release. Oh, and I never say this even after watching for so long, you got a really genuine channel here that reminds me of the passion for games of the old gaming TH-cam. Keep up the great vids, they really are their own style, even if it's just covering games, ppl like to watch others that don't have to lie about how much they love games.
Another cool looking modern homebrew game. If they announce a SNES version for the kickstarter then I'll definitely back it, as that's the one I'd be personally interested in. The SNES will not be able to show as many characters that size per scanline as the Neo Geo or even Genesis without more flicker, but it can match the overall colours very nicely and probably get most of the background parallax as the Neo Geo version too, plus maybe even add a few touches of its own like proper transparency in some places for example. So, yeah, SNES version and then I'm fully interested and indeed backing. And, with the recent announcement of "SNESmaker" coming to Retro Game Forge, it's probably realistic for these homebrew developers to start thinking about SNES development more seriously going forward, assuming the tool is as good for SNES development as it appears to be for NES development. They could potentially even use the "FX3" if they feel it would be necessary to give the SNES version a bit more oomph, since it seems the developer there is going to let other developers use the chip if they want--or at least the Star Fox EX guys have already announced they are going to be supporting it. And, hey, supporting that new SNES rumble controller they also just announced for Doom Definitive Edition on such a port would be an awesome little bonus for a SNES version too.
I think a bigger SNES indie scene would be great. But I don't see the SNES community supporting the console when it comes to new releases as much as I do the MD and Genesis community. A good example of this is the Retro-bit games. I get the SNES re-releases and the will be out of about 2-3k. The Genesis releases will be 5-6k. To me when I talk to SNES gamers they seem less interested in the new stuff. Maybe because the SNES had a great library of games already.
@@RetroGamerBoy At this point, I think it's clear there's more than enough SNES fans in modern times willing to support whatever great SNES stuff that comes along to make it a viable business model, so long as it's actually great, be it brand new indie/homebrew games or even new hardware: SNES Mini sold 5.28 million units. Genesis Mini didn't break a million. I expect the Super Nt sold gangbusters too, but I guess the company could confirm this. Cooly Skunk raised nearly 87k on kickstarter, despite far less hype than any new Genesis games. Doom Definitive Edition had a brilliant reception upon announcement and I think will sell very well. I expect the recently announced official Western release of Rendering Ranger R2 to sell great too. The SNES Edge-Enhancer is receiving a very positive reception and should sell well for Voultar. The community seems to be loving all of infidelity's awesome NES to SNES ports to date. Till & Hat looks great and is getting loads of likes and positive support from SNES fans thus far. Fans seem very hyped about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Maker project for SNES thus far. Despite one extremely early clip, Maxwel's new shumup is also receiving lots of positive support. I'm sure Xeno Crisis still did well on SNES, despite releasing like 12th in line and five years late.* All we really need now is a bunch more genuinely top quality new homebrew SNES games, and the recent announcement of "SNESmaker" should make that easier than ever when it arrives. After that, I think we're gold. The audience is there to support great new SNES games, I have zero doubt, and developers just have to be smart enough to actually serve them with the properly great brand new homebrew games they want. *In fact, I literally just noticed that Bitmap Bureau announced a couple of days ago that the standard edition of Xeno Crisis for SNES is back in stock, which clearly means their initial batch sold out, so that's definitely a good sign. "And we'll be bringing more titles to the SNES, possibly this year but certainly in 2025 at the latest." - Bitmap Bureau
Snap on Paprium, I think it's the most I've paid for a standard game and still don't have it. Shadow Gangs is also going to be on the more expensive side. I'm happy to pay but I hope it does not become a trend.
As nice as it's going to look, at nearly a hundred quid I'm gonna have to say I'm out. I could just about justify £65 for ZPF, this is nearly double the price.
I do, and will keep replaying it every couple of years too. However, that doesn't meant that I don't want a modern game that's similar, especially since Sega themselves hasn't made anything like it since 1990 (Shadow Dancer).
This is just a rom hack using the Arcade version of Shinobi. Pretty shit this hack is... 😑 It will hadly see the light of the day because obviously it is using parts of the original Shinobi code patented by SEGA and it is illegal to use software code in any project that is made to win money. Its a scam!
🤔 As I said this is the Neo Geo build which is the master version. So that makes a Mega Drive ROM hack impossible. It is inspired by the series though.👍

It's a wholly originally developed game inspired by the Shinobi and Rolling Thunder series. It uses zero Shinobi code or assets. It's actually a sequel to a game from 2020, which was obviously released, on multiple platforms at that, as well as an arcade cabinet. It also obviously did well enough to warrant demand for a sequel. As a big fan of the aforementioned series, I played the heck out of Shadow Gangs on Steam and am looking forward to this sequel. I was also rather impressed by the developers' dedication, listening to player input and constructive criticism and continuously improving the game. No need to hate and make wild claims here.

if you play the Nintendo game ( BadDudes ) this is it just in a diffent a Skin and a little added to it.
Um not sure that's correct. Bad Dudes is the same Genre but has complete different traversal mechanics. And the combat is different as well.

That was my capture rather than the game. Mame is a CPU hog and running the capture software at the same time killed my laptop.

But I wanna see all these new games on it, I always comment this, I just can't believe the PS1 is so much harder to make games for than a Dreamcast or Neo Geo game. And the market/demand is there, us PS1 diehards are so readybfor homebrews. Ppl forget how beautiful 2D games were on the console, just cuz Saturn was "the 2D powerhouse" which I love. But there's plenty of 2D games that look and play better on PS1 like Mega Man 8 and X4, or Castlevania SOTN
Part of the attraction could be the underdog / fringe factor. It's more satisfying to make and play new games for less-successful, lesser-known retro platforms like Dreamcast and Neo Geo, than it is to make new games for a console like the PS1 that sold over 100 million units and already has a huge games library.
PS1 is hard, it's magnitudes of levels harder than Dreamcast. Maybe the 2D stuff is achievable but it's very complex.

@RetroGamerBoy ok, so it is a hardware difficulty thing combined with the other issues. What's the popular tool, SGDK for making Sega games? I hope someone makes a similar tool for PS1 someday. Watch, one day it's gonna start getting popular if that easy dev tool comes out. I still want homebrews, but also I'd love to see crazy stuff like a Ratchet and Clank 1 de-make(or that Bloodbourne PS1 project). Or perhaps an indie game like Timespinner where they state it's specifically supposed to look and play like a PS1 game(Kickstarter backers even had an option to get a copy that looked like a big PS1 jewel case). It'd be beyond awesome to release an actual PS1 copy for harcore fans. Like how tons of the Sega new games get released on modern consoles, PC, and also get a Sega cartridge release.
Oh, and I never say this even after watching for so long, you got a really genuine channel here that reminds me of the passion for games of the old gaming TH-cam. Keep up the great vids, they really are their own style, even if it's just covering games, ppl like to watch others that don't have to lie about how much they love games.

Another cool looking modern homebrew game. If they announce a SNES version for the kickstarter then I'll definitely back it, as that's the one I'd be personally interested in. The SNES will not be able to show as many characters that size per scanline as the Neo Geo or even Genesis without more flicker, but it can match the overall colours very nicely and probably get most of the background parallax as the Neo Geo version too, plus maybe even add a few touches of its own like proper transparency in some places for example. So, yeah, SNES version and then I'm fully interested and indeed backing. And, with the recent announcement of "SNESmaker" coming to Retro Game Forge, it's probably realistic for these homebrew developers to start thinking about SNES development more seriously going forward, assuming the tool is as good for SNES development as it appears to be for NES development. They could potentially even use the "FX3" if they feel it would be necessary to give the SNES version a bit more oomph, since it seems the developer there is going to let other developers use the chip if they want--or at least the Star Fox EX guys have already announced they are going to be supporting it. And, hey, supporting that new SNES rumble controller they also just announced for Doom Definitive Edition on such a port would be an awesome little bonus for a SNES version too.
I think a bigger SNES indie scene would be great. But I don't see the SNES community supporting the console when it comes to new releases as much as I do the MD and Genesis community. A good example of this is the Retro-bit games. I get the SNES re-releases and the will be out of about 2-3k. The Genesis releases will be 5-6k. To me when I talk to SNES gamers they seem less interested in the new stuff. Maybe because the SNES had a great library of games already.

I expect the Super Nt sold gangbusters too, but I guess the company could confirm this.
Cooly Skunk raised nearly 87k on kickstarter, despite far less hype than any new Genesis games.
Doom Definitive Edition had a brilliant reception upon announcement and I think will sell very well.
I expect the recently announced official Western release of Rendering Ranger R2 to sell great too.
The SNES Edge-Enhancer is receiving a very positive reception and should sell well for Voultar.
The community seems to be loving all of infidelity's awesome NES to SNES ports to date.
Till & Hat looks great and is getting loads of likes and positive support from SNES fans thus far.
Fans seem very hyped about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Maker project for SNES thus far.
Despite one extremely early clip, Maxwel's new shumup is also receiving lots of positive support.
I'm sure Xeno Crisis still did well on SNES, despite releasing like 12th in line and five years late.*
All we really need now is a bunch more genuinely top quality new homebrew SNES games, and the recent announcement of "SNESmaker" should make that easier than ever when it arrives. After that, I think we're gold.
The audience is there to support great new SNES games, I have zero doubt, and developers just have to be smart enough to actually serve them with the properly great brand new homebrew games they want.
*In fact, I literally just noticed that Bitmap Bureau announced a couple of days ago that the standard edition of Xeno Crisis for SNES is back in stock, which clearly means their initial batch sold out, so that's definitely a good sign.

Snap on Paprium, I think it's the most I've paid for a standard game and still don't have it. Shadow Gangs is also going to be on the more expensive side. I'm happy to pay but I hope it does not become a trend.

It looks like it stutters/freezes a lot like it's constantly loading in new animations. Seems pretty jarring.
Megadrive Cartridge is over $100. That is a bit too steep for a side scroller action game.

I do, and will keep replaying it every couple of years too. However, that doesn't meant that I don't want a modern game that's similar, especially since Sega themselves hasn't made anything like it since 1990 (Shadow Dancer).

It will hadly see the light of the day because obviously it is using parts of the original Shinobi code patented by SEGA and it is illegal to use software code in any project that is made to win money. Its a scam!
🤔 As I said this is the Neo Geo build which is the master version. So that makes a Mega Drive ROM hack impossible. It is inspired by the series though.👍

It's a wholly originally developed game inspired by the Shinobi and Rolling Thunder series. It uses zero Shinobi code or assets. It's actually a sequel to a game from 2020, which was obviously released, on multiple platforms at that, as well as an arcade cabinet. It also obviously did well enough to warrant demand for a sequel. As a big fan of the aforementioned series, I played the heck out of Shadow Gangs on Steam and am looking forward to this sequel. I was also rather impressed by the developers' dedication, listening to player input and constructive criticism and continuously improving the game. No need to hate and make wild claims here.
