I didn’t quite realize how closely the costumes of the production of Hair that I did in Connecticut back in '05 matched that OG broadway cast. Like they took those designs exactly. And the Claude wig (which I didn’t wear when I went on) and the Sheila Wig looked exactly like it. For a split second I thought maybe you had snagged footage of our show 🤣Julie Arenal was our director, and she was the original choreographer, so lots of the OG cast and creatives came up to see us. Their stories of what went on during that original production were absolutely mad. Then the next year Jeanette Bayardelle and that sweet revival cast brought Hair back to Bway.

I was Tevye in my high school senior production. I even attended a Shabbat just to study the Jewish culture. It also helped that was in another community production of it the November right before. That, to this day, is still one of the most talked about things I've ever done.

A terrific video essay by an incredibly talented performer and excellent researcher currently in grad school on her way to becoming a historian of musical theatre. Having had wonderful experiences performing over the years in productions of HAIR, FIDDLER, CABARET and THE FANTASTICKS, my neurons were firing with excitement as I viewed and listened to Emily's presentation. I highly recommend taking the time to view this in its entirety and sharing it with anyone you know who loves musical theatre, especially those who have lived through the years in which the productions Emily includes came to be.

My hat is off to you. (I'm still pumped for further movie musical reviews, even ones that Musical Hell has covered. You did say ABC's South Pacific was next, so...And I'd like to see your take on the Kelsey Grammer Christmas Carol.)
One thing that always amazes me is how different "Let The Sun Shine In" is in the context of the show. When it's played out of context, as it is in the 5th Dimension's famous medley with "Aquarius", it's this cheerful psychedelic hippie anthem. But in the show, it's paired up with "The Flesh Failures", a lament for the forces of society that helped create the Vietnam War and killed Claude. In the show, it's a DIRGE. And it's a desperate plea for us, the audience, telling us that we HAVE to let the sun shine in, to oppose the darkness in society...or tragedies like this will only continue.

Amazing story about how the 5th Dimension ended up recording "Aquarius" was in the Questlove documentary from this year, Summer of Soul. One of the 5th Dimension band members lost his wallet in NYC and some Hair producer found it, and then found him to return it. Then that producer got them tickets to see Hair on Broadway while they were in town, and that's when they heard that song for the first time. The rest is history. That doc is definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

We really enjoyed "Evolution of 60's Musicals," very well researched and presented. The "re-enactments" of famous theatre people by Gerald is brilliant! Thanks for great coverage of the "Fantasticks." It was one of the plays we went to downtown Chicago to see while in high school in 1966.

I just saw an amazing all-Japanese production of Oliver! here in Tokyo where a friend of mine was in the ensemble. One of the most incredible stage productions I've ever seen (I saw a much more modest production by college performers once in about 1970 when I was still in high school). My friend complained vociferously about how the musical itself was under-appreciated by Japanese audiences (no famous pop stars in the cast!), but I had no idea it was ground-breaking in its time!

As a kid my favorite musical was phantom of the opera, I enjoyed the excellent production, sets, and actors / orchestra. As a young adult, my favorite is cabaret. It’s just very well written and the emcee is always a favorite character of mine every time I watch a production of it

THIS IS GREAT, Ms Clark. What about the plays that bravely tackled racism in the 1960s like James Baldwin's The Amen Corner (performed twice on Broadway in 1965)? This the the shadow side to American life that deserves a mention. Thanks!
