    Yeah, the Soviet destroyer may have been there to just stay out of the way and watch, but I 100% guarantee you they were watching American response times, weapons used, capabilities, etc. This was an absolutely golden opportunity for them to observe what the US was capable of doing in a real world situation. But I too have to give it to them, that quote is just amazing.

      Definitely, everyone like to brag about their weapons systems. But nobody tells the full truth about them. In the case of the US we tend to lie our systems a bit downward and wrap things up in words like "Speeds exceeding", or "accuracy to within." It is left vague how far it exceeds it by or how far within it hits. We sometimes lie up as well but not generally. Always lying the same way becomes predictable and we like to have our enemies first real look at some thing to be "Jesus it's faster than we figured and it headed straight for us!" And of course the only true test of a combat system is combat so those Ruskies where about to collect the most accurate data that they could possibly get.
      There is another danger of lying up. If you can plausibly lie something upwards enough you can scare the other guys who can respond in many ways. The Mig 25 Foxbat was one such system. We saw an airframe with massive engines and huge wings and got ourselves in a tizzy thinking about what we could do with a frame like that and the titanium resources they had available and panicked. We then do what we do and build a legendary badass of a plane to counter it. Although the Foxbat was very fast (The fastest fighter/interceptor to ever make production. The YF-12, the proposed fighter predecessor to the SR-71 Blackbird was faster but never made production as a fighter.) How ever, the Foxbat while fast, under performed in every other way. Meanwhile the US made a slightly slower but far superior counter to it that is now the undefeated heavyweight champion of the skies with a now over 50 year lifespan in service and a spotless 104-0 in air to air combat. There have only been two lost in combat ever. Both were F-15 Es in ground attack who were hit by SAMs. Both during desert storm IIRC. Ground attack can be tough, putting up close to so many things trying to kill you having only lost two despite extensive unescorted use all over the place is a damn good record too. (It's pretty damn presumptuous to escort an F-15 of any type, or loadout and pretty much unnecessary.)

      I think that what the Soviets observed was just how hard we didn't have to try to take out that half if a navy while taking no casualties at all. It wasn't too long after that and there was no USSR.

      Oh absolutely they were spying as well. However, I'm equally as sure America didn't give a damn. In fact it probably made them happy, and ensured Irans fate. America would be giving the Russians the side eye, like you watching boys? This could be you. So that was like cherry on top.

    US Navy Veteran. EVERY sailor is trained in damage control and firefighting. That is your HOME!! You learn how to keep it on top of the water. Reagan was my Commander in Chief also (Gator Navy so my ship wasn't involved). His actual quote was: "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: "I'm from the Government and I'm here to help".

      Your home is a piece of metal, floating around on the water, packed to the gills with fuel and explosives. You bet your shiny red ass every single person on those ships trains in damage control. IF you look throughout US Navel history you can see where it has paid off. Compare and contrast the IJN Taiho a new and advance carrier for the Japanese Navy, lost to a single torpedo strike due to poor choices made by the damage control teams. (Such as using ships ventilation to try to get fuel fumes away from a fire. Rather than foaming up the spilled fuel and using sparkless ram fans to ventilate into the atmosphere. The ships ventilation got the fumes away from the fire...and spread it everywhere around the ship in a fine vaporous form. You know, the form it needs to be in to become highly explosive.) So lost to a single torpedo strike.
      Now take the USS Yorktown. It was thoroughly savaged and shot all to hell in the American "victory" of the coral sea. Our first major Naval victory of the war but it still felt like a loss because they hurt us a lot more than we hurt them. The ship made it back to San Diego and was deemed to require several months in dry dock for repairs. However a big action was about to take place at Midway Island so instead of a few months months of dry dock they got 72 hours of frantic patch jobs work by dock workers before heading off to Midway. They still had these guys doing repairs all the way up to the time they actually engaged the enemy at Midway. At the battle of Midway luck was again not on the side of the Yorktown. There were 3 US fleet carriers in that fight. Unfortunately the Yorktown was the one that got spotted. First big assault leave it full of holes and burning. The Japanese airgroup commander reported it as sunk. It not only didn't sink they put the fires out and it was still launching and rearming aircraft. It was still in the fight. Then another attack group spotted it and thinking it was a different carrier as the first one was believed to be burning and underwater by then. Once again the Yorktown was brutally savaged and reported as sunk but this time it was out of the fight. Fires and holes everywhere. She was out of the fight but still clinging to life. The next day after Japan was defeated with 2 of their Carriers sunk and the other 2 mortally damaged (none made it home to Japan) the Yorktown was still afloat and was being towed back to a shipyard where it would finally receive the now even more badly needed dry dock time. As luck would have it a paroling Japanese sub happened across the very badly damaged carrier being towed. It was too good of a prize to pass up. A torpedo from that sub was the final straw and the damn near unsinkable Yorktown, having survived to see victory at Midway, finally gave up the ghost and went under. When she sank she still had her battle flags flying. No ship has ever had a prouder death than that one.
      SO what do we learn from these examples kids? Never skimp on your damage control teams and train every set of dickskinners on those ships to be able to do damage control in their sleep. After all everyone sinks or stays afloat together and when you are trying to keep the ship alive it takes precedence over everything else. The US have learned this lesson very well and that has lead to some ship surviving when there was really no reasonable expectation of them doing so. Other guys who have not learned this lesson so well often lose things like hugely expensive and irreplaceable top end fleet carriers to minor hit that would be easily survivable had the damage control teams not made the problem far worst than it was. Everyone cross trains on a Naval vessel as in a high casualty situation you may be needed to do all kinds of things outside of your general skill set but everyone from the CO down to the greenest deck ape keeps their DC skills sharp. It is the one skill to rule them all.

      @@xxchaos315xx6 Not if the word proportional is used freestanding, as here; it only means roughly equivalent if the statement is "proportional to the damage incurred", that language was deliberately not used. As highlighted by the dismissal of the war crimes case, the lawyers make sure the politicians use precise language to keep their options open.

    The "Sammy B" wasn't actually TOWED back to the U.S. She was picked up (!) and placed about a heavy lift ship, which CARRIED the frigate back to Maine. Lots faster and safer than doing a long range deep sea tow job a critically injured ship.

    I was in the Navy while Reagan was president. While he was president other countries were on notice-Americans were off limits. This story illustrates how serious he was about protecting Americans.

    When he said sinched the ship with cable, he meant they welded padeyes on each side of the crack in the hull and sewed the ship together with cables. One of the officers went below decks to check damage. The space was flooding but and the crew told the officer we got this dont worry as they were patching holes and pumping water out. As the officer left the space, some one put a cassete tape in a boom box so they could work to music. That officer said he knew they could save the ship when he saw the crew in good spirits.

    I was there.
    The tanker escort mission was called Operation Earnest Will. When we would enter or leave the gulf through the Straits of Hormuz, Iran would light us up with their Silkworm missile radars. And steaming around in mined waters is rather nerve-racking.
    I was on the USS Merrill (DD-976), SAG B, during this engagement. We gave them a 15-minute warning in English, then farsi (we had a CT onboard who spoke farsi), then in English, then in Farsi, then he finished it with, "Have a nice day." Of course we all cheered at that. Afterwards, we gave them a 10-minute warning, a 5-minute warning, then we told them, "We are opening fire, is everyone off the platform?" They said, "We are not leaving." So, we opened fire.
    We fired 2 rounds before they fired back with a 22mm chain gun. Our Fire Controlman took care of that with one shot, as Nic said. Yes, he was THAT good.
    We were supposed to fire 5 or 10 rounds, then the Lynde B. McCormick was supposed to do the same. We were supposed to trade off until finished. We wound up doing all the shooting on the Sassan oil platform because Lynde B. McCormick's gun had dropped sync and was "walking" and they couldn't fix it in time.
    After the engagement we had a joke: How does the Ayatollah inspect his fleet... Glass Bottomed boat.
    The Soviet Udaloy destroyer was gathering intel.
    A few details wrong, but it doesn't detract from the story and NO ONE gets ALL the details right.. I love Nic's presentation. I've seen most of his videos and they are awesome.

    Wars were fought over oil in the last century & will be for the early part of this century. But as 2050 approaches if not a bit sooner, wars will be waged & millions will die over Water.
    Who owns it, who controls the flow & who gets it. In the end it will make the 'oil wars' look small in comparison.

    According to a teacher I had around this time who had commanded Navy destroyers in the Korean War (I'm old. I turned 20 the year this Operation happened), the mathematics calculation of a proportional response included all the friendly vessels (i.e. Kuwaiti tankers) that had been sunk as a part of the equation. So proportional was including no more/much reduced Iranian capability for tanker killings, dammit. :-p
    And wars often start over issues with supply and demand. Though other issues might be more paramount, supply and demand is often a factor, and the supply and demand of strategic commodities, such as oil, that everyone has need of in modern civilization is the easiest to figure as a reason for war.

    Correction: At that time the US was only getting about 2-3% of its oil from Kuwait. Most of US oil was domestic at that time. They were protecting NATO oil, not US oil.

    7:55 Yeah, all Iran learned was that they would have to use proxy forces like Hezbollah and Houthi in order to maintain a facade of uninvolvment, hoping to provoke a Western power into a confrontation they could spin as Iran being the victim of an evil non-Islamic state. One of the reasons this video has gotten so much traction is Iran doing just that right now, sending money and weapons to proxy forces in Syria, Jordan and Yemen and denying that they are involved at all in the current mess, but 'if Israel gives up' then attacks on Western flagged ships 'might' suddenly stop...until they need to do it again.

    While I have to admire your knowledge of Operation Praying Mantis (I knew something of what occurred, but wouldn't have been able to give any details), your math is a little off. The USS Samuel B Roverts was disabled in 1988 and returned to service a year later (1989), serving until 2015. That's 35-36 years, not the 20 you spoke of.
    EDIT: In retrospect, it seems MY math is even further off than I thought yours was,. That would be 25-26 years of service after the incident, not the 35-36 that I first calculated - so you were much more correct than I was. My apologies!

    If America's proportional was 1:1, everyone on earth would just laugh. The idea is not retaliation, its Prevention. so 1:5or 1:6. and that's property. What do you think the response would have been if someone died? That's when you would have seen a much bigger show of force and proportions would have been higher.

    wars for resources has been going on for 4000 years. This is not new just a different resource.
    Japan attacked pearl harbor, why? Why did Japan invade China?
    Once oil is not profitable, we will find something else to fight over like water for instance.
