"I was shot in the chest and bleeding out - but I refused to die." Paratrooper tells his story

- Martin Hewitt spent eight years as an officer in the Parachute Regiment before his military career came to a shattering halt when he was shot in the chest during a firefight with insurgents in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
He survived - but the severity of the injures resulted in the paralysis of his right arm and he was medically discharged.
But Martin has refused to be defined by his disability.
In an incredible story of resilience and determination, he has since represented Britain in downhill ski racing, scaled Mount Everest and walked to the North and South poles unsupported.
“I want to change the perception of what disabled people can achieve,” says Martin.

Thank you for your support.
A humble man. And regardless of what he thinks, a true hero.
Hi, you are one of those few officers that us grunts remember affectionately all our lives. I am from the generation of 3 Para guys that are referred to as Farra the Para’s Green Eyed Boys. We were lucky that we had a couple of officers that we respected, but there were others that used “The Para” experience to further their military career. The mental thinking of a Para is something that carries you through your time in the army and puts you ahead of everyone in civilian life. You just know that you can do anything you set yourself to do. Impossible? Bollocks! Once a Para, always a Para. Cheers mate. Harera
Thank you Martin for your service!!!! respect to all our veterans😊
Huge respect to our armed forces and our Veterans! Martin is a fighter there is no question about it and I thank him for his service. I play the Veterans Lottery and will always support them 👍
I have so much respect for our armed forces 👏👏👏
I have respect for life savers rather than life takers
Bloody inspirational bloke.
True inspirational top man 👍🏻
I would suggest, the motivation is this, "I've already died. So now I will live." just a thought
The vest didn’t work ?
Bullet could have sneaked through the gaps of the vest, most likely
It went above the vest, he said in the interview.
The bullet went just above the vest in to his shoulder cavity and severed the brachial artery on it's way out. Not often soldiers or people survive something like this it's a remarkable thing Martin survived and thankfully he did. The man is fighter there is no question about it.
You was lucky or very able in escape to sure death
Such a brave little man; the bravery of taking on a developing country with your modern weapons really inspires me....
Oh look, a smelly troll.....
@pdalaigh says the keyboard warrior.
better a keyboard warrior then an ill informed puppet my friend....@@IO-zg8md
What a ridiculous comment, have you ever served for your country pdalaigh? It's easy to sit in safety and knock someone else's commitment to their job, fellow comrades and country 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@mattwestby1169 Yep, the British army have served all over the world for many hundreds of years.......and we are all really grateful for their attention...
Brilliant mentality.

Top man sir Thankyou for your service"❤👍
Helmand Province, Afghanistan, . . . hmm . . . last time I checked that was not in USA. So let me get this straight, you were in someone else's land putting holes in their chests and then they put a hole in yours so now you're a hero?
No the government put him in Helmand Province, they sent him there because that’s the job he does, that’s what the government do when you join the services, they send you to places to fight
USA?? This guy is a Brit!
Haha that's what you get when you sell your soul to the devil
What on earth?
