Walter J McCarthy Jr. - One of the “Footers” Built in 1975 as a self-unloading bulk carrier by the Bay Shipbuilding Co, Sturgeon Bay, WI. She’s 1,000’ in length and 105’ of beam.
Her 80,500 tons capacity makes her one of the top 4 on the Great Lakes. She’s powered by four (4) GM EMD -20-645-E7B Diesels, making 14,400 bhp, turning two changeable pitch propellers. She was formerly known as the Belle River, renamed the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. in 1990.
