Implementing tarrifs is going to increase revenues (taxes) for the government and the citizens wil not benefits because imported products or items will cost more.
So you are ignoring the actual reality of now, and worrying about a hypothetically non existant tariff
I directly experienced the impact of Trump's tariffs during his presidency. What unfolded isn't what you might have expected. In this particular case, certain classes of electronic goods being built and exported from China into the USA were hit with a 25% tariff. In the area I work on, the devices being built were Wi-Fi networking devices. Business access points, home routers & mesh systems, etc.. Most of the companies (let's call them ODMs - Original Design Manufacturers) building these devices actually had their headquarters in Taiwan, but their factories were mostly in China, with some manufacturing in Taiwan in addition to that. Keep in mind that these companies are typically being contracted to build the Wi-Fi systems, but are only partially designing them, or simply manufacturing them. The companies that I work with (call them OEMs - Original Equipment Manufacturers) that define the products, develop the software they run on as well as design the hardware either on their own (or co-develop with the ODM) are based in the USA. Think of it this way, the OEM is based in the USA, and contracts the ODM to build it for them, using their factories. To be clear, the USA based OEMs do not have their own manufacturing capacity, as it is not as profitable to do so, so they hire the ODM to build the Wi-Fi systems for them.
With the tariffs looming, the USA based OEMs went into scramble mode, knowing that having to raise their pricing by 25% (actually it would have been more because they need to maintain their profit margin on top of the higher cost of goods) would be disastrous for their product demand. So the pressure went on to the ODM companies to move their factories out of China and into other cost competitive countries. Since hosting their factories in the USA would result in a cost increase of more than the 25% tariff, the ODMs went to other countries in Asia, namely Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, and to a lesser extent, increased their manufacturing footprint in Taiwan. This was a massive effort for the ODMs, as they had to build new buildings to house their equipment, ship it all over from China to the new facilities, hire new staff, train them (often by Chinese employees) and reroute their supply chain into the new country. Not counting the fixed cost of moving their operations, their operating cost in the new countries was probably 8-10% higher than it was in China. This certainly had an impact in China, as factories that employed 1000's of people went dormant and nearly everyone that was previously employed lost their job. Did any of these jobs go to the USA? Well, with one well publicized exception that I won't go into to avoid commenting specifically on publicly held companies (you can use Copilot or ChatGPT to find out which company did add a factory in the USA) NO...these jobs / factories did not go to the USA, as many were lead to believe.
I guess the punch line here is that tariffs result in complex and unpredictable results, with long term implications. In this scenario, even if the tariffs were rolled back, I don't think these factories are ever going back to China at this point. Also, if the tariffs resulted in price increases, they were marginal. Different industries will certainly have different outcomes than this, and the current 100% tariff on Chinese built cars (increased to this level fairly recently by the Biden administration) will almost certainly stifle any competition from those companies that were previously planning to build their brand and sell in the USA.
You can always avoid products with a tariff, but you can't avoid the tax Kamala Hamas proposes.

There are only a few US appliance manufacturers that make washing machines for domestic use and the only US manufactured gas stoves are Viking and similar top range brands that start at $3k a unit. Tarrifs on Chinese goods will hit retailers like Walmart and Target very hard - and the folks who shop at these stores will be reeling. My response would be to buy little if anything that I didn't absolutely need - what'll that do to the economy when 300 million people do the same?

Thank you, Fareed. I've been waiting for a major news station to articulate why Trump's tariff policy would be a disaster, and this was one of the best explanations I've heard. I would also add some context about why Biden expanded some tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and batteries. Tariffs like these can help 'infant industries' grow domestically and complete against more developed competitors overseas until they can gain enough capital to bring their prices down. Like all effective tariffs, they are used like a medicine to address a market imbalance - they are targeted, temporary, and administered in proper doses. If effective tariffs are like economic medicine, Trump's tariffs would be an extremely dangerous overdose.
