Asiatique The Riverfront is one of the most popular and innovative shopping and entertainment districts in Bangkok, Thailand. It successfully combines the elements of a night market and a mall, set within a large open-air space right by the Chao Phraya River. Opened in 2012, it offers a delightful mix of shopping, dining, culture, and entertainment activities that cater to both locals and tourists alike.
The interesting story behind Asiatique The Riverfront goes back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The site was originally used as a trade port by the East Asiatic Company, owned by Danish businessman Hans Nille Andersen, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). This company was one of the main channels of foreign trade in Thailand during that time, dealing in teak wood, and the port served as a crucial component of the region's bustling trade industry.
However, as the business grew and technology advanced, the port's usefulness started to decline. Larger, more modern docks and ports were built, and by the mid-20th century, the site had fallen into disuse and was eventually abandoned.
In the early 21st century, the property, owned by the Sirivadhanabhakdi family (one of the richest in Thailand), was transformed into what is now known as Asiatique The Riverfront. Instead of allowing this historically significant location to decay, the family decided to revitalize it, preserving the old warehouses and other structures on the site while also incorporating modern facilities and attractions.
Today, Asiatique The Riverfront is home to more than 1,500 boutiques and 40 restaurants housed in converted warehouses, interspersed with lively performance venues. You'll find everything from upscale designer brands to unique local crafts. Entertainment ranges from a giant Ferris wheel offering stunning views of the city and river, to Thai boxing matches, to the widely acclaimed Joe Louis Puppet Theater.
Visitors also have a chance to learn about Bangkok's past at the onsite maritime museum, which chronicles the history of the original trade port and the neighborhood's transformation. By maintaining its historical roots and combining it with modern amenities, Asiatique The Riverfront has successfully revitalized a piece of Bangkok's history, giving it a new life in the 21st century.
