    It's always amazing how tough these plants really are when they're dormant. I used to cringe hard watching these type of repotting videos where the plants are handled seemingly so roughly. I would have never had the courage to do this to my own carnivorous plants without great videos like these. Thanks, Jacob.

      @SarraceniaNorthwest  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for watching! Yes, these plants are a lot more resilient than many people would give them credit for. It takes a lot more than the rough handling of repotting to kill these plants. It's usually the lack of adequate sunlight that do these plants in!

    I bought all kinds of wonderful plants from you about 10 years ago and have cared for them as suggested, meaning only distilled water and rain water, never water from a hose. I am The Pond Liner Lady, therefore my business is liners and ponds and helping others find plants for their ponds. One of my customers suggested I put my "Pitcher" plants into my bio steam and ponds and guess what Jacob, they are loving it, so maybe they can grow in regular water. I just had to post this so other's could try it if they have bio pools and want filtering plants.

    • @SarraceniaNorthwest
      @SarraceniaNorthwest  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for watching and sharing your comments. Bio ponds are different creatures. The water is processed through the complex filtration system where plants and bacteria utilize the minerals in the water. It's like using water hyacinths in a fish pond to pull out excess nitrogen. So, it's not quite safe to say that carnivorous plants can grow in "regular water." It all depends on the mineral content at the end of the filtration process of the bio pond. A simple TDS meter can assess that for you, and we cover water quality in our video, "5 Common Mistakes to Avoid." Also, some municipalities are lucky enough to have relatively pure water. We started off in Portland, and we used water straight from the hose. It's just a matter of testing the water first to make sure the mineral levels are low enough for long term success.
      I wish we had the space for a bio pond. That would be my dream bog garden!

      Thanks for watching. Be careful about repotting your flytraps if they're actively growing right now. They don't like root disturbance. It's best to wait until they're dormant. We plan to do another video this summer about repotting flytraps when they're actively growing. Stay tuned!

    Great video. I try to repot every 1 - 2 years. I feel 10 years is too long. I use garden spray to get rid of aphids and other bugs. I noticed if you don’t repot or use insect killer then do a quick Timelapse of the plant you’ll see ton of tiny bugs crawling all over the plant which can damage plant overtime.

    • @SarraceniaNorthwest
      @SarraceniaNorthwest  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      LOL! We have so many mother plants, we can't possibly repot that frequently. That's why we only repot if a plant outgrows a pot or if it's declining in growth. But, it's also good to know that the soil remains healthy for at least a decade. We also have a video on pesticides in the works, so stay tuned! And thanks for watching. Hope you have a great spring season.

    Hello, I've seen that you are an excellent Venus flytrap cultivator. Taking advantage of your responses to comments and your experience, I would like to ask if you know an explanation for why the tips of the traps of Venus flytraps turn black and the traps do not fully develop. This is something I have seen commonly happen with beginners, although I always hear that it is due to excess water or sun. I would like to know if you know an explanation for this and how to solve it. Thank you

    Can I take scissors & trim the roots that are super long to make it easier to repot them?

    • @SarraceniaNorthwest
      @SarraceniaNorthwest  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! Trimming roots will always set a plant back as it will need to divert its energy to repairing the root damage. It will also impair the plants ability to absorb water. The best time to trim roots is in fall and early winter, when the plant is dormant. This timing is crucial as it will give the plant time to repair the root damage before spring growth occurs. Otherwise, I don't recommend doing it. It's not necessary, and it will result in a smaller plant. If you want a large flytrap, keep the roots intact.

      Nah, they're pretty slow when you consider it took 10 years to get to that many plants. But if they were repotted yearly, they would have produced a lot more plants in the same timeframe. Yeah, Darlingtonia propagates much quicker.
