@@seerasan You could change the game by staying one night at every Transfer location. That'd keep the train journey fun and be a great way to show some unique untouristed areas. Also continuing down to Kagoshima from Kyoto seems like a fun next step.

My wife discovered this special ticket on our honeymoon trip back then. It was crazy keeping track of train rides constantly and the absurdly long time to reach Kyoto but we saved ALOT. I wouldn't do this anymore now with kids to consider but for the young adults watching this, don't miss out. It's an absolute steal.

I literally just got back from a 10 day trip in Japan. My son, who lives Sasebo, Japan, and I traveled from Tokyo to Kyoto to Osaka back Tokyo, by train to but we took the bullet train. I also purchased a Suica Card Pass, and it was so easy to ride all the JR lines and green cars. I loved Japan and hated the 16-hour multiple flights it took for us to reach our destination, Tokyo, Japan, arrived at Haneda Airport. I learned so much about Japan. Like for example, you have to finish all of your food or it's frown upon, you stand on the left side of escalators so people who are in a rush can use the clear right side to go pass you, no stopping in the middle of any walkways or sidewalks, must keep walking traffic flow going, also no walking on red lights, or be ready to get hit by passing vehicles. You must wait for green pedestrian light to glow before walking/running across the street or suffering the consequences. Yikes! Be courteous to elderly and children on trains/escalators, no talking on cellphones on trains, no being loud on trains. Also, you do tons of walking and going up and down multiple staircases. I was there for 10 days only, and I walked overall 30 miles and climbed 1k stairs. Did a lot of shopping, temples, museum- Ninja & Sumari, etc.. Visited the Imperial Palace - but was bummed cause it was closed, so we only got to walk thru the Imperial Garden Palace, beautiful. Had tons of fun, to say the least! Congratulations on living there! 🎉🎉 I'm jelly😂

When I was a student, it was standard to travel using the “Seishun 18 Ticket” during summer vacation. There was a night train that left Tokyo at 12:00 midnight, although it has been abolished now. After two transfers, I arrived in Osaka in the morning. I think it's a good means of transportation to experience the regional characteristics of Japanese people. But be careful of the heat.

I have often said the best way to see a place when traveling is on the ground. When I got out of the Army (too many years ago now), I took 2 bus rides...one from northern California to Arizona (stayed there 3 days), then from Arizona to Tennessee. 53 total hours on a bus (17 for the first leg, 36 for the second leg), about 2500 miles. Travel by local trains, even making multiple transfers, would be perfect for me.

    • @excitedwandererjapan
      @excitedwandererjapan ปีที่แล้ว +3

While it isn't easy to do this for sure, it is definitely more rewarding as you'll be able to see different things and meet different people. I was on a local train to visit a hiking route in the outskirts of Tokyo and a very friendly Japanese lady spoke to me in her limited english, and asked me where I was from. Long story short, she had apparently lived a few years in my little town in Malaysia before! The world is small and i'm so glad i got to meet her simply because i was on a local train.

Hey, was watching this video and saw your questions so thought i'd give it a shot at answering. I don't live in Japan but I have visited there a couple of times so I can share some info. It won't be a problem for you to travel Japan without any Japanese, especially in major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka because the staff at hotels/restaurants, shopkeepers etc are used to having foreigners every day. I've even met Japanese shopkeepers who spoke Mandarin simply because Japan is one of the top destinations for visitors from China and Taiwan.
Ordering food in restaurants is also very easy because they would either have english menus, english letters or pictures that you could point to and just say "one please" . The Japanese people spent 5 years of their school life learning English and while not many end up speaking like a native, they'd at least be able to understand very basic English.
Please do not be afraid of travelling to Japan because you don't speak Japanese, it is totally fine and you can still do or see whatever you want to in the country. One of the main reasons I started my travel channel on Japan is to help people see that Japan isn't such a scary place to travel to after all! Let me know if you have any further questions. - Aaron

This kind of regular train trip will give travelers a taste of the real Japan that cannot be experienced on a bullet train.
If you have time, I recommend that you get off the train in one of the towns along the way and spend a couple of days exploring.
If you are lost in the middle of the night, don't worry, translation software will help you find your way around.

I also travelled from Tokyo to Kyoto with Seishin 18 ticket in 2020. I remember Shizuoka, which is Atami to Toyohashi, was a long tiring journey.

Great video Sarah... Wasnt aware of this. Would be good way to split up over a couple days then Shinkansen back... In bigger city stops could you of waited an hour or so to get another later train so less rushed?

I find the rush hour here isn’t really an “hour” it lasts from 5/6pm until last train… in my experience living in Tokyo anyway 😭 the quietest time to take trains is the middle of the day so 11am-4pm

I would love to take this trip. Could you please post the G. Maps directions in the description? How further can you go; could you travel to Kagoshima via commuter trains? The only thing I'd do differently is stay one night at every Transfer location. That'd keep the train journey fun and be a great way to visit unique untouristed areas.

A long time ago, when I was a student, I traveled with a Seishun 18 ticket. He was a poor student with no money, but he had plenty of time. When I think about it now, I think it was a luxurious and happy time.

If I lived in Japan I'd definitely make that trip, considering the price difference and that I wouldn't mind just enjoying a long train trip anyways.... but as a tourist, it'd be a bit hard to justify. It's time you could spend on other things...
Well, I guess this also depends on how much a trip to Japan costs, how many times you expect to visit, how long you have to stay.
I'm on the exact opposite side of the planet, a trip to Japan means saving for years just to pay for tickets, and so every minute there is kinda precious. You also already have to endure over a full day plane trip in total to get there, so taking another long trip is not exactly what most people would have in mind. xD
But long trips like that are not for everyone... a huge portion of my life I made yearly or bi-yearly trips to visit relatives.
When I was still a kid, we used to go by car, but as I grew up we started going by bus only. Nowadays we try to at least cover portion of the trip by plane.
It's an 18 hour bus trip to one portion of the family, plus another 7 hour trip to visit relatives on both sides of the family. It's also bus on horrible roads (they are better these days than they were 10 years ago, but still far from train smooth), so you can imagine how much worse it is.
I've also made a full day+ bus trip to attend a cousin's wedding. I will never do that in my life ever again. :P
But from that I can say that over my lifetime I just developed a whole ton of strategies to not only deal with boredom and immobility during trips, but also sometimes just enjoy the experience.
But the real major difference is just safety and extra worries. I mean, between a long trip in my country and Japan.
For instance, in Japan even if I lost a train, got a bit lost, had to stay in a small town because I lost track of time, I wouldn't be too worried about it. I mean, yes, it would mess up schedule if you have things to attend to, mini heart attack for getting lost, but that would be the main worry. And there would be alternate ways to deal with it too.
Here, if your bus leaves you in a rest stop, if you get lost in some small town, or you get separated from family or friends for some reasons, dude, consequences could be extremely horribly bad. There's no real support infrastructure, alternatives and options when you get to small towns and cities here, you could end up having to sleep on a bus stop, if it even stays open, waiting a full day for the next bus. That's if the place isn't dangerous and you don't end up becoming a victim of something. I can't even imagine the desperation of getting separated on a trip like that from family or friends... so in our trips we always had the extra stress, extra anxiety, paid double attention, used all precautions, and predicted every possible bad scenario. You can't enjoy anything when you have to do all that and have to be constantly on alert for bad things.
If you forget something inside a bus you can forget about it, you'll never see it again.
Buses are often stopped by police to check for contraband and drugs.
You gotta keep your belongings with you at all times because it can get stolen.
Some people can't even sleep because of all these things.
Public toilets are a horrible mess, you don't wanna use them. The one in the bus will often get clogged and with a strong smell of piss as soon as it departs or even before it, and the ones on rest stops it really depends how big, new and well maintained the place is...
There will be kids and babies making a ton of noise, someone will end up vomiting on the bus and you will have to live with the smell through all the trip (either that, or the smell of strong cleaning chemistry that the driver used to clean things up), there is no unwritten rule of silence so you basically have to always go with headphones or earplugs if you want to sleep, you often end a trip like that with the flu or something else because it's too much time in an enclosed space with people coughing and sneezing.... only people who made these kinds of trips regularly will know how bad it can get.
I wish transportation and infrastructure was like Japan in my country... xD Heck, even taking planes to shorten the trip, because portions of my mom's family lives in the middle of nowhere, even paying more for it the trip is still super convoluted. Shortest route involves taking a plane to the capital of the state, then taking another plane to the closest medium sized city, and then renting a car and driving a few more hours there. You end up trading long hours on a bus, to a shorter trip that needs tons of planning and lots of nerve wrecking connections.
Alas, it is what it is. xD I'm just ranting now. :P
