  • Addlestone and New Haw in profile, old and new in photos and video. This is where I lived as a child. Spot the cars and vans traveling in reverse ;)
    This is a slightly revised and updated version of my original video.
    Video taken by me on 7.4.13 (or if you're from the USA 4.7.13)

    So good to see this, a great reminder of my old home town. Lived here from 1949 - 1968 before moving to the West Country . Fond memories.

    I grew up in Addlestone. (moved away 1996) Loved the place in the 70s - 80s. A good mix of decent shops. The town seemed to go through a decline through the 90s-2000s . Probably due to large stores opening just out of the town around Brooklands area. Its nice to see Station Road looking a little better these days. P.S, Loved working at the Coop Superstore...RIP x

    Fantastic video, really bought back memories. Lived in New Haw Road in the early 1960's and Brighton Road until 1979. Hardly recognised the place when I revisited a few years ago. Happy days.

    Wow, that made me feel really melancholy!. Two of the houses I was bought up in in the 1950s/60s are in the video (New Haw Road and Brighton Road). As a kid I used to live on the buses using the old Green Rover tickets. I had a brilliant childhood there, but looking at it now I'd hate to return.

    I was born and brought up on the Byfleet Road near the railway station. I haven't been back their for 20 years but its unrecognisable now! The area used to be much more rural with a farm and stables behind the houses adjacent to the railway. The flats in front of Byfleet and New Haw station didn't exist and the massive electrical switching station was a small transformer installation. Their was a permanent lock keeper living in the house next to New Haw lock and the boats moored along the river were much more traditional canal boats with all their colours and art. My old school in now a housing estate and the entire area has become an urban sprawl. Not planning to make another visit!

    Hi, could you tell us where the photo is at 4:40? I have a feeling it might be New Haw Lock bridge? My grandfather was lock-keeper at New Haw for many years in the sixties, seventies and early eighties. Happy memories.

    Grew up in Addlestone. Darley Dene, Sayes Court & St Paul's. To me, idyllic in the 70's. I guess building the M25 was the beginning of the end?

    • @RobinHope
      @RobinHope  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, having the M25 so close spoils the area I think :(

      Oh is that you with the lady teaching you how to swim? Wow!!! Small world. What year was that roughly? I spent many a happy evening and weekend at the Addlestone swimming club. Remember Mr and Mrs Cooper who ran it? They must be long gone I would imagine. I lived in New Haw Rd almost next to the entrance to Bentley's Moated Farm. Now a golf coarse I see.

    Hi Robin
    this is Robert Taylor - I think I may be right in thinking that you probably went to Prairie Mission (Marsh Lane Church and now the King's Church) in Addlestone many years ago - you may remember the Taylor family who lived in Ongar Road

    Before the UK became utterly car-centric, Addlestone and other towns exuded charm and quaintness. Today, so many of these places teem with non-descript architecture, cars, car parks, huge stores, and empty storefronts. Having lived in Addlestone from 1996-2019, I saw too many important buildings demolished. What a shame! Despite the new development, Addlestone remains fairly messy and forgettable. Am I too critical?

    Hello
    I was enjoying your video which had been posted on spotted Woking on Facebook when I was surprised to see a photo of Sunny Side laundry in Woodham. I had been trying to find out where this was as my Grandfather was born there. His mother was the laundress and proprietor. Could you please tell me where you found the photo as I would love to be able to see it in better detail? I suspect they are my relatives in the picture. Regards Sally

    • @RobinHope
      @RobinHope  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sally,
      The photo is in "An Addlestone Album" by D.M and J.L Barker. The laundy seems to have been taken over by New Haw School as the infants class. I was in it myself many many moons ago. I've even got video of students pointing out that the class was Sunny Side Laundry at one time (video taken in 1988). I'll dig them out for you and post them to you ok? Interesting that those people in that photo are actually your relatives. Can you email me please Sally? That way I can reply with that photo and the New Haw School video. The laundy was right next door to the New Haw Club and Institute which is still there. The site the school was on is now Marshall Place I think. A newish small close. Sally can you email me on:
      pentrell@gmail.com
      I'll get back to you later tomorrow.

      Yes they were very Happy Days. I only wish I could revisit that time. Were you at New Haw County Primary School in 1961?

    • @quivixit
      @quivixit 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I was Robin. I would have been 5 in 1961 and so in the infants. Do you remember the old red fire engine that was put in the playground for a while for us to climb over. I guess that was about 1964/5?

    • @RobinHope
      @RobinHope  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I well remember the old fire engine. We all used to play with the hose pipe on it till it eventually broke off. It must have been there in 1962/63 coz I left New Haw school in July 1963 when I was 11. Last thing I remember was, they were frantically saving up for a swimming pool. I helped with that but never actually saw it coz I'd left to go to Fullbrook. It was beside Miss Booth's class wasn't it? On that grassy bit?

    I tried to reply via an email, but it was sent back as unable to be delivered 'permanently' (!) So I found my way back to this page. I'll wait to hear from you - but what I did say in my (undelivered) mail was that we are down in the Woking area now and then to visit our eldest daughter and three of our grandchildren - so maybe we could meet up and talk over old times? It would be good if you could send your email address, rather than this TH-cam contact.

    Hi Bob, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Oh you live in Woking now?
    Yes I'd love to come over and meet you and your family Bob. I've got a wife and 4 grown up children myself. No grandchildren yet though.
    Yes it's best if I give you my email address. We don't want to continue our conversation on here really. Email:
    pentrell@gmail.com
    pentrell is just a name I made up to use for ID on ebay.
    We live in Basingstoke now by the way. Looking forward to your email Bob.
