That part kills me everytime. I can just imagine Ms Devine braiding that little girls hair so tight that when she finished, it felt like she twisted that pony tail until it pulled the girl's scalp all the time. Just like a tourniquet ! Well, BOTH ponytails mustve felt that way Right before braiding: 😲 Oh please not again! ! During braiding: 😳🥵 After braiding: 😵
I remember I got my hair braided one night when I was little and it was SOOO tight. I cried and cried until they took them out that same night! Ahhh memories :)
I think we all have a Miss Devine somewhere in our lives. Whether it's a teacher, a grandmother, or maybe a neighbor. I can certainly think of a few people who can be described as a Miss Devine to me, and though they're stern, and at times hard to understand, I'm very grateful that they are able to play a role in my life.
Went to a Christian pre k with nuns and one of them was like the Irish catholic version of Miss Devine and let me tell you even as a three year old I would avoid eating before grace when she sauntered through the room (something tiny me did a lot). She just had that power and like James said, “she was one of the few people who had more power than my grandmother.”
I swear! Every time I watch this. It has me in tears. Lol! Because most everyone know a Mrs. Devine growing up. Lol. The mangos was Rottttten! Lol! Oh My Lord, This is funny. Hee hee hee!
Li B she looks a lot like my 6th grade teacher. I HATED her. For good reasons. She would ignore our problems and brag about her and her children/grandchildren as if she was the second coming of Jesus! And YELL right up in our faces. She was a mean one
"Lord please let me get old enough to get out of this class." Lord I remember praying prayers like this when I was little. Sunday school seemed to last an eternity and actually physically hurt! LOL
This one had me cracking up! Had a neighbor like this, but she was more into our grammar than Sunday School. So we had to prepare ourselves for when we talk around and to her. Best Grandmother ever, either though she was only my neighbor.
I really love this story, it brings back so many memories of my childhood. Every time I watch this video I smile from ear to ear. Lol I remember those tight braids.
I can listen to these two all day. Such wonderful story tellers. You can hear how their teacher had such a fun and positive impact on them growing up and I'm sure there are so many fond memories. Honestly Miss Divine sounds like a super interesting person.
I love this story so much. Probably my favorite story from StoryCorps not only because it's funny, but it gives you more appreciation of small moments of your childhood that will last you forever and the people you shared them with. 😊
I was cleaning out my fridge yesterday and I pulled out a rotten mango and thought of Miss Devine and how God is EVERYWHERE!!! And just randomly burst out laughing in the kitchen.
I just found StoryCorps tonight and I can't stop watching. You made me cry, laugh, and cry again within an hour. Best movies around can't do that! Subscribed!
"Lord, please let me get old enough to get me out of this class." That made me laugh. I don't know which story was funnier: going to church in pajamas or the braids.
these two are such great storystellers, god i would listen to just these two for hours! Wish they had more tapes of just them talking! thats my christmaswish, youtube make it happen!!
This brought back memories when I got my hair braided and I cried and my mom said "it don't hurt that bad" I was like let me do it to you she didn't let me do it and she was mad at me so she did it harder I will never forget that
I absolutely adore this story. There's a familiarity that I feel listening to the two family members remember and laugh about an important figure in their childhood and reflect on what she taught them. Keep up the good work StoryCorps

Funniest thing I heard all day
We saw the video
I wonder where she is now
The way she pauses and then says "rotten" : killing me
It makes you wonder why she would give people rotten mangoes. I mean... that’s just rude.
I LMBO everytime I hear it!
matthew bajarias Giving rotten mangoes is rude. Telling them to eat it is cruel.
matthew bajarias Well then I guess I’m glad she decided to stop at rudeness.

2:36 “When Miss Devine braided your hair, your eyes went up like this...” I love that part 😂
I remember I used to laugh because that was exactly how my great grandma did my hair
As a girl who’s had her hair braided, I related to that so hard. 😂😂😂

After all this time I love coming back to this. I could listen to these two tell stories from their childhoods all day lol
James' laughter had me laughing, too. I love these two sharing memories. So wholesome.
Some of StoryCorps' videos are really sad and depressing, about war. But some just make you laugh until you burst!
I lovevthis SC PBS short. Reminders of days gone by. Adults who went the extra, extra mile to ensure you were on the right track.
I was cleaning out my fridge yesterday and I pulled out a rotten mango and thought of Miss Devine and how God is EVERYWHERE!!! And just randomly burst out laughing in the kitchen.
