It is an absolute crime that we as a nation did not save the USS Enterprise from the scrap yards. Out of all the ships, she needed to be saved above all others.

Honorable Mentions, USS Johnston, USS Hoel, and USS Samuel B Roberts, sunk off Samar but achieved the almost impossible, stopping a force many times their size.
Also in that group was USS Heermann.

USS Enterprise is also the only foreign warship to have received the British Admiralty Pennant for her service in WWII.
and the victoria cross from them as well, said to be the highest award in the navy
I'm prejudice but my vote is for the USS Enterprise. My father was able to land his SBD on it during the Battle of Santa Cruz after his carrier USS Hornet was hit and unable to land planes. It is so sad that Enterprise was eventually sold for scrap.
Much respect for your father would have loved to talked to him .The SBDs and F4Fs held the line in the early stages of the war.?
@@straitjacket8689 When he got back to the US fleet after hitting the Shokaku with a 1000 pound bomb, Hornet had been hit and was listing, unable to land planes. He was able to find the Enterprise and land with only had 5 minutes of fuel remaining. It was a good thing that he didn't have to ditch along side the Hornet because his rear gunner had been hit by 20mm cannon fire from a Zero that chased them after releasing his bomb on the Shokaku. His rear gunner ultimately survived and lived long after the war ended. As to SBDs and F4Fs, my dad would say that SBD stood for "Slow But Deadly" and could take a lot punishment. I have some declassified photos of his SBD from later in the war when his was hit by anti-aircraft fire during a raid on Palau. A significant portion of the leading edge of his right wing was blown away and he as still able to land it back on the Lexington (CV-16) After landing, the plane had to be pushed over the side. SBDs played a significant roll from the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 to the Battle of the Philippine Sea in 1944. Many of the dive bomber pilots preferred the SBD over it replacement, the SB2C. The SB2C was referred to them as "Son of a Bitch Second Class". F4Fs were slower and less agile than Zeros but were able to take more punishment. It was also a good thing that the F4Fs were replace in late 1943 by the F6F Hellcat which was a real "Zero Killer" especially during the "Marianas Turkey Shoot" in June of 1944.
@@BP-1988 I have read that the Japanese hate the SBD because of the two forward firing .50 cals and the SBD shot down many Zeros and I believe one SBD pilot became ace in one.I cannot imagine nor many what your Father and many like him went thru. Just reading his experiences leaves me in awe for lack of a better term.
If haven't yet gone to the Marine Corps museum at Quantico if you get a?chance do it .They have the last surviving SBD from Midway there.Take care
@@straitjacket8689 My father said that he didn't think there were any SBD aces before he passed. However, I think I read some where that there was at least on SDB ace. As for my father, he was credited with 2 1/2 Zero kills. (He would kid that he was only half-aced.) He shot a Zero down at the Battle of Santa Cruz after dropping his bomb on the Shokaku while trying to get back to the Hornet. This was the same Zero that wounded his rear gunner. He also splashed a Zero during a raid on Kawajalein in December of 1943 which he didn't get credit for. Neither he nor his gunner saw it go down and was only told about it by another pilot later that day after he had turned in his report. The one kill he would talk about the most was during a raid at Truk Lagoon in April of 1944. He was attacking a ground installation on Moen. He pulled out of his dive after dropping his 500 pound bomb (an SBD could carry one 1000 pounder or one 500 pounder and two 250 pounders) and headed towards an airfield looking for new targets for his 250 pounders. As he came around he spotted a Zero preparing to take off right in front of him. At that point he was too low and too close to use his .50 calibers. He had to pull up slightly and then released both his 250s. The SBD lurched violently from the explosion(s). Immediately, his gunner started screaming "You got him! You got him!".
I haven't been to Quantico but I have have been to the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola twice. They also have an SBD on display. Highly recommend.

Honestly, all of the pre-war treaty cruisers in the pacific deserve a special place in history for holding the line early in the war (even if it was costly).

Enterprise also received a British Admiralty Pennant, the first non Royal Navy ship to hoist one since the Pennant was created in the 16th Century.
Enterprise also protected USS Hornet and the B-25s she carried for the Doolittle Raid that was the first aerial counterattack against the Japanese home islands.
Enterprise deserved the #1 but USS Johnston, Roberts, and Hoel deserved to make this list based on the sheer daring of their final stand. Three little destroyers stood up against an entire Japanese fleet and managed to turn them back.
The submarine sunk by the Enterprise in 1941 was by Pearl Harbor. Some of her aircraft came into Pearl Harbor shortly after the attack. There was only one major battle the Enterprise missed. Coral Sea happened about the same time as the Doolittle Raid in which she escorted the Hornet. She missed the surrender after taking a bomb that sent her forward elevator into the air. Drac has an interesting video showing the Enterprise maneuvering under attack near Guadalcanal. The maneuvers are really hard and quick. Great helmsman.
it was a kamikaze that took enterprise off duty for the surrender so she couldn't be there Missouri taking her place whilst she was in dry dock for repairs
Enterprise is numero uno, but it is nice to know that the CA,CL and DD do the most heavy hauling on this list
I believe the USS New Jersey is the most decorated battleship in U.S. naval history. Nineteen battle stars earned during WW 2, Korea and Vietnam.
Yes, but with all do respect, most of her stars were earned after WW2. All of the ships in this video earned their stars fighting the Japanese.

A highly honorable mention that should’ve been on this list is uss indianapolis, CA-35 she was the sister ship of uss Portland, she received several battle honors. All this yet is dwarfed by her final fateful mission that would change the course of history, she delivered the components of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. She was sunk a week earlier shortly after midnight on July 30, 1945 by Japanese submarine I-58 in the Philippine sea
For most people, the history of the USS Indianapolis covers mostly the fate of the survivors of the sinking and the horrific end that many of them met at the "mouths" of the sharks.
The other contributions of the ship during WWII tends to get lost in the shadow of that one so kudos for focusing on the REST of her history in your comment.
USS Portland was among the 13 US Navy Surface Ships during the so called First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (also called “Bloody Friday the 13th”). Portland engaged Imperial Japanese Navy Ship “Hiei”, originally a battlecruiser but after her third reconstruction listed as a fast battleship. Portland landed, or so it’s claimed, almost 30 8” shells on Hiei with USS Helena and USS San Francisco adding more shells. By dawn Hiei was a floating wreck - the Japanese claim she was hit over 85 times but that many of the American shells were duds. Aircraft from Henderson Airfield bombed and torpedoed her completing the destruction.
Hiei was throughly mauled by the cruisers on the first night naval battle of Guadalcanal. Her bridge was totally destroyed and she lost all command and control functions.

Is no one is this thread going to mention that the USS Laffey’s attack on Hiei which killed many commanding officers in the bridge and heavily crippled the ship’s ability to fight?
Portland or Sweet Pea, as she was known by her crew, had her stern badly damaged at the first Battle of Guadalcanal. She sailed in circles firing away. She also lost a number of crew members. My Dad was part of the replacement crew. He proudly served aboard Sweet Pea, until the end of the war on the Signal Bridge.
I'm surprised the Birmingham wasn't on here with all of the awards that the ship and her crew received, even if a boat load (no pun intended) were Purple Hearts.
No surprise the CV-6 took the top, as she was one of the two USN CVs to serve in the Pacific to survive the entirety of the war, the other being CV-3 Saratoga (Ranger was kept out of the Pacific due to her poor protection), and CV-6 was, after the losses of Hornet and Wasp and the severe damage to Saratoga, the only USN CV in the Pacific for a while. It's a shame that CV-6 wasn't where the surrender was signed, and its a bigger shame that she was scrapped, being tied for one of the greatest ships sent to be scrapped, along with HMS Warspite
except warspite fought even on her way to the scrap yard beaching herself after locking her rudder where as I just sat there and didn't fight it
The Enterprise was also awarded a pennant by the British admiralty, the first non commonwealth ship to receive that honor.
Interesting historical tidbit. Enterprise and Yorktown were built as Public Works projects to keep people employed. It proved a smart move. It gave the US Navy two new carriers that could employ the lessons learned with Lexington and Saratoga.
USS enterprise is my favorite, just a little side note. enterprise was the first carrier to conduct night operations, in 1942 while stationed at noumea at new caledonia her new TBF avenger started practicing for night time operations and in 1943 she conducted the first night time operation launching a radar equipped TBF avenger and 2 hellcats in defense against japanese mitsubishi G4M "betty" bomber it was a success however a decorated pilot was lost during the night in an unknown case also she conducted night time raids against indo china, philippines, Formosa(taiwan), and the japanese home islands making her the only operational nightcarrier in the pacific in world war 2
My dad served onboard the USS New Orleans during WW2. I asked him where his homeport was and he said they really did not have a home port. In other words they were underway a lot more than they were in port. They almost ran out of food once.
My dad was an SOC pilot on the USS New Orleans from January 42 through November 42.
Without a doubt it's definitely USS Enterprise CV-6.
Our only two aircraft carriers to survive the entire Pacific War were Enterprise and Saratoga. The only reason they survived as they were damaged so much and so often they spent most of the war being repaired. Langley, Hornet, Lexington, Yorktown and Wasp were not so lucky. Hornet was in commision for only 12 months.
My two Grandfathers were on were on the USS San Diego and USS Minneapolis and I did not know all details about the battle stars and how highly rated these ships were out of all the other warships in WW2. Thank You

The Washington was the only Battleship to Sink a Battleship in the war ....
USS San Diego was not a light cruiser. She was an anti-aircraft light cruiser, a completely different class than the Brooklyn class CLs. Her correct designation was USS San Diego CL(AA)-53. Two of her sister ships were lost at Guadalcanal, USS Atlanta CL(AA)-51 and USS Juneau CL(AA)-52.

She was not a light cruiser but she was a light cruiser in the very next sentence? There were multiple classes of light cruisers, including the Omahas, Brooklyns, Atlantas, and Clevelands, that served in WW2. Do the other classes of light cruiser not qualify as light cruisers because they did not belong to the Brooklyn class, as well?
@@jdubhub68 The Atlanta class was far different than the standard light cruisers of World War II. They were designed primarily as carrier escorts with a heavy AA battery of 16 5 inch guns. Additionally, they were far smaller and were the only class of U. S. Cruisers to carry torpedo tubes. Yes, there were other classes of light cruisers than Brooklyns; Omaha were pre Brooklyn that were basically obsolete by World War II, Cleveland class were improved Brooklyn class, etc. My point is naming an Atlanta a light cruiser is incorrect as they were not 6 inch gun equipped light cruisers. Get off your high horse and learn the difference between the classes!

Honorable Mention BB-62, USS New Jersey. 19 Battlestars over her lifetime, flagship of the Pacific fleet. Second in stars to ONLY the Enterprise in American history. New Jersey played a role in every major amphibious invasion after 1943. Only Iowa to see surface engagements. She was at the Battle for Leyte Gulf, where she literally was the spearhead of the largest naval battle in history, where we crippled Japan's navy. The list goes on, but we should put some respect on the Black Dragons name.
You forgot to mention O'Bannon's award from the potato growers for distracting the gun crew of a Japanese submarine by throwing potatoes at them until O'Bannon could bring her own guns to bear.
Actually the most decorated US Warship was the USS NC (BB-55). Over the course of her World War II career, the USS North Carolina took part in all of the major actions in the Pacific. She engaged the Japanese in the Battles of Guadalcanal, the Eastern Solomon Islands, and Okinawa, among many others, and participated in multiple raids on Japanese-controlled islands, earning 15 battle stars to become the most decorated American battleship of the war.
No one asked for the most decorated Battleship, we’re looking for the most decorated warship.
Being from N.C. ,I'm proud of the USS North Carolina's service and accomplishments in WW2. My father served in Navy in WW2. She's a beautiful ship.

How about a wild card in the USS Pigeon ASR-6 which while it only got one battle star got the first Presidential Unit Citation and then a second making her the only ship to do so.
The USS Nickolas was also awarded the honor of escorting the USS Missouri into Tokyo harbor in recognition of her exemplary service!

Most decorated warship in our history is the USS New Jersey!! Dad was on this ship from 1950 to 1952!!
It's awfully easy for a ship that served in WW2 and for 50 years on and off to rack up more awards, but IN WW2, she was not the most decorated.

Battle Stars are one thing but if you want to go for the top dogs it's the PUC (Presidential Unit Citation) very few ships/subs got that award from the President in WWII. There is a lesser award than the PUC it is called the NUC, (Navy Unit Commendation ). Just FYI
PUC was awarded to entire units/ships - the level of valor was equal to that required for an individual to receive the Navy Cross. USS Wadsworth received one PUC for it's time on picket duty at Okinawa.
@@steveherman190 Concur. The saddest one awarded was to the USS Atlanta during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal when she was sunk by both sides in that battle, tough way to go down in Iron Bottom Sound.
@@billignaczak3851 There was a good reason why Washington was wary of firing immediately, but when the enemy was clearly defined, oh boy look the fuck OUT. The snipers on that ship trained by Admiral Lee obliterated everything in sight.
@@tremedar I do think you mean Gunners Mates and Fire Control men not snipers, If memory serves me right it wasn't the Washington that was involved but the Heavy Cruiser San Franscico that hit Atlanta, I believe the last order given by Admiral Callagahan was cease fire then he was killed by a direct hit on the Bridge of The San Fran. If you're interested I would recommend a Book by RAdm Samuel Eliot Morrison called the Two Ocean War (You can get it on Amazon for about 25 bucks.) He wrote 15 volumes of the Navy in WWII this book is a short version and a wealth of info. FYI, I took my Guided Missile Cruiser down there in 1993 to do a 50th Commemorative of the Battle. What shocked us ALL was how damn small the area around the Canal and Savo Island was, It wasn't a Battle but more of a Slugfest Brawl. Where we were used to operating in 100,000's+ square miles of Open Ocean this was something else entirely. After that day we headed up the Slot to meet a Tanker in the Bismark Sea and to tell you I've stood watches when it was dark but this was damn near impossible to see anything in those tropics, pucker factor on the Bridge was high that night.

New Jersey and Iowa received 9 battle stars in WWII, Wisconsin 5, and Missouri 3. They served a long time and also earned battle stars from Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf. New Jersey ended up with 19, Iowa and Missouri with 11, and Wisconsin with 6.

💥💥 I'm confused there was a show on the military channel years ago called top 10 fighting ships and the Iowa class was number one and they're not on this list
thats because they were poweful but 1 they didn't do much in ww2 the only notable thing is that missouri was where the japanese surrendered though that was only because enterprise was yet again in for repairs after another explosion this time a kamikaze after ww2 they did do some stuff with I believe New Jersey at 19 battlestars but that was well after ww2 by the time she got that was about 40 years after she launched all the way in the Lebanese Civil War (1983-1984)
You need to correct the pronunciation of many words in this video. "Canal" is properly pronounced with the accent on the second syllable, not the first. Also ship hull numbers are stated as separate digits - 4 4 9, not double-4 9. I enjoy the video but the many pronunciation errors are annoying and distracting.

@@marcboss6 Getting "used to it" doesn't make it right or less annoying. I suspect that the narrative voice is computer generated, and I assume there is a way to make the narration better. I would hope that The Buzz is interested in improving their offerings.

Whoever is directing these videos, needs to get the correct pronunciation of many of the words in this video and several other "The buzz" videos. Try a little thing called rehearsal!

I wish you knew the proper pronunciation of Guadalcanal and other places, it is irritating. As a journalist and filmmaker I know you need to learn proper pronunciation of any script. Do your homework BEFORE you speak these names.

ODD, The USS New Jersey BB 62 is not on this list?
Not odd at all. BB-62 wasn't commissioned until late 1943. She didn't see any of the early battles.

New Jersey only received 9 battle stars in WWII. Her other 10 were received in Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf. She served a long time.

I’m trying not to be nit picking here. But you are supposed to be proficient in your story telling including the proper pronunciations of places that have been talked about in the whole world for almost 80 years . Guadel ( you pronounce that right) but the second word is the same word as the very well known PANAMA CANAL. How do you pronounce that second word? Do you pronounce it KENNEL? Or CAN-AL. A canal is a water way . I realize Guadel Canal is not a water way but that word is pronounced exactly the same as the second word after Panama . You speak very good American English Guadel Canal should be a no brained. I think you’re the first person I’ve commented on regarding pronunciation but they’re many TH-cam docs with the same issue an intelligent speaking young person sounding like you’re totally uninformed about the subject you speak . I’m not trying to be mean but I’m sure there will be thousands of people who are very interested in WW II also getting frusterated in your lack of knowledge of your subject, again I apologize I just hope if you read this that it matters what you are saying . I’m sure you’ll be doing a lot more of these and I hope you correct this. Thank you for having an open mind good day. The narrator of this video clip needs to work on her English she butchered the pronunciation of at least a few words and she doesn't know how to use the word the in front of a word that is a proper description.
