  • In this video I'm testing the use of clear gesso as a medium for pastels and I'm doing a realistic pastel drawing of this pine tree.
The clear gesso is Windsor and Newton and it was applied to a 200gsm drawing paper.
The pastels I used were mostly Koh-i-Noor soft pastels and pastel pencils as well as some Conte a Paris pastel pencils.

I've been following your videos for a while and the more I watch, the more and more compelling I feel to start painting again. The paintings you do is simply excellent and your explanations especially helpful. I know pastels, painted for many years after art school, then life took over and now I'm worried about becoming a beginner again. Have you ever painted a pillar rocks in a deep ravine? Where I live, the nature is magnificent with ravines, mountains, glaciers and active volcanoes that regularly erupt at the moment.

Great job. Its interesting how you start with background and then layer the tree over the sky

@@elmiraojaghian4741 thank you. Clear gesso works as a primer. Fine sandpaper that you can buy in hardware stores is also very good.

You can also add baking soda to the gesso, or use acrylic medium and baking soda. They work quiet well.

Isnt pastell based on chalk?! I think that is why it blends well with the gesso, because that is chalk aswell as far as I know. The coloured pencil are probably too different a material to blend well with the gesso.

I’m a lttle confused. I watched your ‘small study’ videos where you demonstrated drawing clouds and waves and a ‘wet sand’ and rocks landscape - all done with coloured pencils on Fabriano paper (sand colour) primed with gesso. The drawings were fabulous and the colours vibrant. There didn’t appear to be any muddy colours or difficulty applying more than one colour.
So hearing your disappointment with the performance of coloured pencil on gessoed paper in this video seems odd.
Is the paper much heavier than the Fabriano?
Why such differing results with gesso here?
Absolute beginner looking to learn, learn, learn.

Nice work as always. Do you use the Koh-i-Noor soft pastels or the extra soft pastels and is there much difference between the two.

I think the discrepancy between the pastels and pencils is simply that pastels have larger pigment particles than color pencils do. So the color pencil particles could be getting deeper into the tooth of the gesso or being dispersed too much to have a large coverage. They might need more layers than the pastels do. Or maybe try sanding the gesso with a very fine sand paper.

    • @MiroslavSunjkic
      @MiroslavSunjkic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not sure what the difference is, but I've tried sanding and it didn't really help much. I might have to look into it more.

    Now my question is -
I hope I can roll the artwork once I’m done and that wouldn’t hinder the artwork
I’ve always shipped my artworks rolled up
Also I normally fix it after I’m done
Will fixative work on the artwork with gesso as the base ?
