    I wouldn't call 8 and 9 string guitars "pointless". Excessive seems more appropriate to me, but it all depends on the sound you're after.

    • @Steinjung
      @Steinjung 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What is pointless IMO is people buyin 8 or 9 strings for the 3 lower strings instead of just downtuning. On the other hand there are guitar players (Tosin Abasi for example) doing amazing things on those guitars. I personally like those guitars a lot and even though I play and like metal a lot I always ended playing more clean and complex structures with my fingers instead of just chugging the lower notes with a pick.

    • @marcthedashergd6321
      @marcthedashergd6321 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pete did an experiment on downtuning and a 6 string tuned to his 8 string tuning sounded a bit worse probably because of the string tension.

  • @aikensource

    I guess you could argue that the 0s and 1s of an 8 or 9 string are pointless with a bass player, but a big reason guitars with that many strings are a thing is for extendes sweeping! or just extended range without changing position on the neck.

    It's telling to me that the guitar seems to almost entirely disappear in this version of the song.At best, there's a vague outline there, but nothing more. It indicates that the writing of the bass part in this song was, as is often the case in this type of music, an afterthought; oversimplistic and buried in the mix, reduced to lolloping around after the guitar part, upon which more time and care was spent. Even a guitar's cutting sonic capabilities can't bring it out in the mix. Time to give your bass parts more thought, perhaps, and make them able to stand on their own.

    • @LesPaulManiac
      @LesPaulManiac 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's how I always feel with instrumental metal music like this. It's a great show of talent, but if it's a 'solo' project lead by a guitarist, the bass is either an exact copy of the guitar line or the bass is minimalist. That's why in my prog band, my bassist is more of a 'key-bass' player so he is almost always doing countermelodies to what the guitar is doing.

  • @CPTBacardi
    @CPTBacardi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think this sounds really good, probably better than the original, just because that bass tone has a very nice sought after "texture" to the sound that is very difficult to get with an electric 8 string. There are purposes for extended range guitar though. Those extra strings can create better sounding chords, and new options for voicings, obviously, and it's especially nice for the solo players out there that would like to have one instrument to do everything. I suppose in metal it could only be used one way, but if you play it clean, the extended range gives you an edge.

    Which is the lowest tuning by which tuning bass an octave lower than guitar makes sense yet?

    • @peteplaysmusic
      @peteplaysmusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're tuned to the same octave in this video. If you have the bass that capable of tuning an octave below the guitar then it can work but it depends on the instrument :)

    • @RurczakKurczak
      @RurczakKurczak 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've noticed that they are in the same octave and that's why I'm asking by which tuning it is better to tune it ovtave below and which is better to tune it in the same octave. For example my band wants to play in drop G and we don't know if we should tune down 5-string bass or tune 4-string up to the same octave as guitar.

    • @peteplaysmusic
      @peteplaysmusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Rurczak Kurczak Drop G an octave below on a 5 string is OK but you'll need a very thick string and to get your bass setup for the thicker gauge strings. A multi scale or 35 inch scale bass would also be better :)

    • @blahblahsen1142
      @blahblahsen1142 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my opinion is drop A. you can run a 135 string without modding the bass guitar and even a 5 string would handle it fairly well, albeit lower tension than i like. stringjoy makes down to 145 in bass strings but ive yet to order them. i know the 135's sound good. the benefit of drop A on a guitar is that you can still play normal chords and power chords with open notes without just sounding totally muffled to shit. anything lower and open chords just go out the window and you just have to do Djenty Chuggin and awkward bar chords on the 2nd fret or farther. if you have a 7 string its even better cuz you get standard tuning and that low A, so its like a 6 string and then BAM, massive power chordage when you need to go heavy.

  • @LemmyKoopaVGA
    @LemmyKoopaVGA 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Large number string guitars and Bass guitars are going to have different electronics and hardware which will change the tonality of the instrument. Bass guitars are designed to get the bass sound out of the guitar, while an 8 string is designed to be a guitar with a lower range, but not to sound like a bass guitar.
    The 8 string is bound to have a more high end sound than the bass.
    I think the problem is that if you have your guitar go down so low, what's the point of having bass? I feel like if you go that low you're just drowning out the bass's audio space.
    Sure you can mix it to kind of work out, but it's still taking a lot of the spectrum from the bass.

      that's a great argument, if that's the case have and additional guitar player on a bass part. some one I remember saying to a 9 string guitar player said "Leave the low end to the bassist that's what you're paying him for!" where i agree i also like the option for the bass to go lead while the 9 string guitar player picks up the bass end, giving the bass player time to shine and putting someone there who can keep the bass moving. you can do a lot of things but i feel like maybe higher strings on the guitar should be next because anymore and you'll have a 6 string bass and 6 string in one instrument.

    • @LemmyKoopaVGA
      @LemmyKoopaVGA 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cameron Wilson I personally think that if you have seriously low tunings, it's not fair to your bassist, and it basically makes them just there to fill in the guitars a little bit more to make the riff sound meatier.
      I'm not saying the music isn't good, I'm just saying it kind of gouges the bassist's role.

    the 8 string is pontless unless you use the f*cking high strings. you can solo in a guitar as you can't solo in a bass, and you can use whatever chords you want in a guitar, which you can't do in a bass. if you just keep djenting the fuck out of it, it is pointless.
    and i think something very importante to keep in mind while riffing is how Petrucci Works with the seventh string. that is the way it's supposed to be used.

      @nopedynopenope107 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, but those were fucking Cliff and Lemmy.
      i didn't say you can't solo in the bass. you can but not as you can in a guitar. you can't get really high notes, not even play too fast, and the bass is far away from being as dinamic as a guitar.

    • @nopedynopenope107
      @nopedynopenope107 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh, for fuck's sake
      for the second time, i didn't mean you CAN'T solo in the bass. i already listened to sheehan soloing loads of times. what i mean is : a bass doesn't have the fucking G, B and E strings, so you'll not get that delicious E6 at the end of the solo; and the bass can't be played as a guitar. it's different instruments, different techniques, and different sounds coming out of it. the bass has this problem really hard to describe, but it always seems like it's getting some interference when played too fast. i think it's a limitation with the finger technique, but i'm not bassist to tell. that's something that doesn't happpens on a guitar, in which you can shred while getting the notes to sound as clear as your technique lets you. and, as far as i know, you can't sweep pick a bass

    My whole thing about extended-range guitars is that, more often than not, anybody who gets one will instinctively crank up the distortion and jam on a bunch of elephant-fart riffs that shake the ground, but don't do much of anything else. There's so much more potential for these types of guitars. For example, ever hear of chord melody versions of those old 20th-century jazz standards? For those who don't know, it's when you take a popular jazz tune from that time period and play the bass lines, chords and melodies all at the same time on one guitar. With those extra bass strings on an extended-range guitar, you could play some killer walking bass lines that you couldn't play on a conventional 6-string ax. It would definitely take the tune to a whole new level.

    This is quite amazing and proves how versatile and important the bass guitar is. It's often underutilized. I feel people either don't want to take the time to learn it or bands don't want to unlock its potential and are happy to just use it to solidify the low end and play boring root note stuff. It took me longer than it should have to understand how important the bass guitar is for the guitar tone itself. I never understood why my guitar never sounded right recording at home, that is until I began programming bass lines into the mix. Suddenly it sounded massive and "correct" and bypassing the bass was always amusing to hear the difference.
    That being said...the 8 string guitar is still a good choice, but like the bass, must be properly utilized. The guitar, if nothing else, is easier to play and unlock that creativity. The scale length is shorter, strings lighter, complex chord shapes are easier, and it is easier to play faster. Still..alot is possible on the bass. Great video.

    I love both instruments, play bass the most but i'm agree with Peter. Extended range instruments are cool, but doesn't play themselves, no matter how manny strings you use, is how you use them. You can use a monocorde but as any instrument, using it the right way can be awesome. You can do amazing things with one octave or six.

  • @Aichomancer
    @Aichomancer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This sounded fuzzy because the bass has higher guage strings and different pickups that are designed to get a mellow tone. The guitar is meant to get bright and crisp tone with clarity to it. The 8 and 9 string guitars are useful just because of that. They can handle a dsitortion in low tunings.

    here’s what i’ll say, if you’re going to only use the really low strings for your riffs on 8+ strings, then you might as well just play distorted bass (i mean it’s way cheaper), that’s what royal blood does, but if you’re going to use multiple strings to create melodies and riffs then you should use an 8+ string guitar

    I think you all over think this bass vs guitar thing..... Every song can be different and its your choice and skill to make it sound amaizing.
    If this CRAZY bass line can surpass guitar and create epic sensations for listeners than DO IT.
    Most important is to be open minded and creative and music allow you todo that HEAVY, MEAT, HARD or soft, fun, melodic sensations.
    There is no chance guitar surpass bass and other way around :] even if it will work... it will not work in all songs.
    BUT i believe there is a guitar with 10 strings that got both of them on it.
    This guy just give me a new fresh wind of inspiration for me and i play both guitar and bass :] CANT decide witch one i like more.
