    One thing has never changed over the years, is the corruption of corporate bosses to try and cover up blame, even in cases like this where it is blatantly obvious why it happened

      KLM had some valid points to make; and I would add that, thought the controllers didn't make any blatant mistakes, the Spanish government did all they could do to hinder the investigation. So yes, governments and corporations.

      @@cchris874 Yes, very good point. Although ultimately VZ was at fault, KLM’s points about the ATC were valid, and I think there were some major failings that contributed to the confusion. They used non standard phraseology, gave ambiguous instructions and even addressed the Pan Am aircraft by the wrong callsign on one occasion. All of those things undoubtedly contributed to the mistake made by Van Zanten. And I do believe it was a mistake, and not a deliberate decision to disobey instructions.

      @@tjfSIM it's true, that the ATC made a mistake with the callsign, and was sometimes confusing. Nevertheless, they gave the KLM plane route clearance (that is for when the plane would be in the air), they didn't give them take off clearance. The word "okay" could not have been interpreted in this way. Pilots knew the difference between route clearance and take off clearance. Two different things, that must be obtained separately. First officer Meurs said, "we don't have clearance". Stress and exhaustion of that day contributed to the wrong decision being made by captain Veldhuyzen van Zanten. In that fog, knowing another plane is operating on the same runway, and not having clear instructions to take off, should have been enough for the pilot to hold his plane until he was absolutely sure.

    Because, of your Stupid regulations regarding overtime. Van Zanten did not want K.L.M. to pay accommodations for the passengers. Even when it came to terrorisim and weather delays. How much did it cost K.L.M. for all the deaths, destruction and funerals? Van Zanten,s impatience, not being able to wait 3-5 minutes. Even the Japanese Kamikaze pilots did not take off without permission and they were on suicide missions Oct-44/Aug-45.

      Hubiera salido más barato quedarse la noche ahí y a la mañana siguiente continuar su viaje. Hubiera habido comprensión por parte de KLM, que fue por causa de fuerza mayor, un atentado

    Well sir, your pilots were not given clearance to take-off by ATC. And they did not follow instructions.

    I remember this from a Newsclip. It was a English Newsclip. I do not understand anymore. Only. It is sad this occurred.

    The Dutch Pilot was a fault due to his arrogance.

      I don’t think we can just blame one thing in an accident. He was a big factor that led to the accident but it wasn’t the only factor

      He was at fault but not the only fault, and the cause of his action is due to pressure. America really portraying 'real people' with america's own made-up projection. America should go execute their own head for this.

      He wasn't arrogant. He used to ask his first officers to call him JAAP which means unsophisticated FFS.

    I feel all fault was on the atc who confused the mr van zanten and that is why he actually decided to take off

      ATC did not confuse Van Zanten. The KLM was issued an ATC clearance, which is directions on the route to take once airborne. It is not a take off clearance. That has to be obtained separately. Van Zanten executed the take off roll without a take off clearance having been issued. ATC caused no confusion whatsoever and are not at fault.

      ultimate car and flight feed the only people ATC confused was the Pan Am crew for not being clear as to which taxiway they wanted the American plane to exit the runway from

      ultimate car and flight feed I agree. If you read the transcripts, ATC bumbled the plane names and numbers and did not call a Ground Halt until fog and radio transmissions/confusion/heterodynes had been sorted. Terrible tragedy. RIP all those lost that day.

      @Laika24102007 They couldn't take the turn that they were given because Turn 3 was impossible for any jumbo jet to make . Remember the airport was normally used for smaller planes and low density traffic. Recreations show that they were given an impossible function to perform at Turn 3 and that made them think the controller must have meant Turn 4. Hence they stayed in the runaway and continued slowly on to Turn 4. They reported they were not clear but hetrodyme ? cancelled that out. The only one that suspected they were still taxing was the KLM engineer who questioned the Captain.

      @@scotthughes2914 Exactly. Plus they're were other planes at the other end of the taxiway waiting they're turn to take off. Even if the Pan Am could make the C-3 turn, other planes were parked at the other end. So it wouldn't have been able to continue. The tower meant to say C4. That's the taxiway earlier planes took.
