- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, JamBase teamed with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own video series. We began with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and tapped many of our favorite artists to record a cover version either at the JamBase office in San Francisco or at one of the many venues around town and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and today’s participant Jackie Greene shook up "Sugaree."
Grateful Dead first played “Sugaree” live on July 31, 1971 at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut, immediately preceding the debut of “Mr. Charlie.” The song was written by the familiar team of Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia and was recorded for the latter’s debut solo LP, Garcia, released in 1972. Performed heavily by The Dead throughout the 1970s and in the 1980s, with more than 350 performances “Sugaree” became more rare toward the twilight of their career. It was only played live five times in 1995, including its final rendition at the second to last Grateful Dead concert at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 8, 1995.
Prior to his gig at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco yesterday - a storied venue for the Grateful Dead as their lone August 13, 1975 show there became One From The Vault - Jackie Greene and his bandmates Nathan Dale, Fitz Harris and Brian Filosa set up backstage for their stripped down version of “Sugaree.” The northern California native’s Grateful Dead roots run deep, with Greene having performed with The Dead’s bassist Phil Lesh & Friends ensemble, as part of the acoustic trio WRG with Dead guitarist Bob Weir and Chris Robinson and also regularly incorporating Dead covers, including “Sugaree,” into his solo sets (Greene also recorded “Sugaree” for his 2009 EP, The Grateful).

Flawless. Can't sit still on this one people...soooo soulful.
Never gets old. Thank you, Lord, for talents like that.
ブラッククロウズからジャッキーのこと知りました。彼のグルーヴ感溢れるギタープレイ好きです♪
As a DeadHead since 1967; I'm think I'm qualified to say of this cover: Excellent!
You are actually the least qualified.
Was at closing of Winterland , and many other Bay Area shows, and totally agree with you .
Black crows does it justice Atwell 🤘🎸🎵
I AGREE, Jackie Green is amazing!
So are all that join
him.❤☮️🎶😊
I loved the Grateful Dead. So tried and true to their music, and the wall of sound.
Jackie Green’s great, but I prefer this version live with Phil Lesh.☮️🎶
Thank you for doing proper homage to this vibe. Heartfelt and appreciated!
As good as all these covers are, it just gives you that much more appreciation for Jerry. Fly high my man, fly high!
I'm in such a good place right now I can't explain.
WOW! Excellent brothers....Thank you
Crushed it. Well done Jackie and crew. Garc RIPs
man so good. I go back and forth between Jackie and Chris Robinson when it comes to sugaree vocals but then Jackie comes in with the guitar. damn tasty.
Agreed.👍✌️👌
I with you on this. Chris does an excellent job but this is pretty darn good too. Love them both. Such a great song
Susan Tedeschi
I love the way Jackie does Sugaree, one of my all time favorite songs
Love this guy's singing voice. Very strong and soulful, especially for someone so youthful.
+quartzimaging Absolutely. Where does such soul come from one so young......? Pure.
age is no measure of life or passion. time. that pesky fucker.
Love this song especially when he sings it!
This is unbelievably good. Just outstanding. But if you really want to be moved, play it again a few times and listen to Nathan Dale noodling on the backup licks and playing the leads at the breaks. I don't think I've ever heard such soulful, sublime riffs in any song. Truly masterful. They sit so tight in the mix that you almost don't know you're hearing them at first. Then after listening a few times you'll never be able to unhear them. What an amazing guitar player.
I've been a Jackie fan and a Dead fan since before they played together. Love them both.
When they come to take you down…oh man…what a song. Thanks for the great cover.
Jackie Greene, what a fine musician and singer!
Thank you Jackie Greene and the band cause I love this! One of my favorites. Keeping the Grateful Dead alive.
One of the better versions and musicians in this series.
I agree fully. To be honest, some are sort of weak. Overall, SUCH a cool project
david rogers I totally agree. This version that he covers often, is his best. My second favorite Sugaree cover is a rocking version by Chris Robinson Brotherhood.
I love Chris robinson
Love Jackie
wonderful vocals....!!!!
Great Song..one of my favorit GD tunes...well played!
good, wat, this is the best of americana today.
I thought Jackie was a child when I first saw him w the dead in Chicago in like 06’ er so. Which he was a child and so was I. I am 38. Quickly I saw that he wasn’t some kid. This rendition of Sugaree is gorgeous and immaculate. That’s what we want to hear. I’m glad my generation has Jackie, to represent all the love and Hettyness of our music. ✌🏽❤️🤟🏽
I've been a fan of JG since the 90s when he was a teenager. I knew then he had "it". Have you seen this video with Bob Weir?th-cam.com/video/a_t3bLuzNe0/w-d-xo.html

Love this song!!! Love Jackie Greene! WOW!
Had the pleasure of seeing Jackie out front of Phil and Friends on a night when they played a Dead show - "Shakedown Street" as the opener, second set of Help/Slip/Frank and Scarlet/Fire - and he gets it. Not surprising that he slays it here.
Love this!!
Excellent cover....outstanding!
First time I heard this guy I fell in love with everything about it and his style and personality as well! That song was, Ive Been Thinking Bout You!!! Loved it and then I saw he covered The Dead's Sugaree!!! They kill it!!! Very impressive hope they come play at the Hampton Coliseum soon!!!
Became a fan of Jackie Greene in the 90s when he played at free concerts around Sacramento, CA. He was a teenager but had the blues then. Going to see him in September at a small venue in Sacramento. Have you watched his "fragile and wanting' vid? Love it.
Awesomeness. Real Music. Timeless. Keep Rockin' Jackie.
Jackie did an awesome version of this live at the Mystic in Petaluma on 6/11/16. Rare that a cover has as much or maybe even more soul than the original.
What on earth are you talking about? You've heard Jerry sing this one?
You tell him Marlon!!! Nobody's in Jerry's league when it comes to Sugaree, Althea, and Wharf Rat among others.
👍🌹💖awesome cover!
Thank you Jackie Greene, brings back great memories of my late brother RIP BIG BRO!!
