I don't annotate because I give away things I won't reread, but I keep a notebook next to me and copy lines and page numbers if I want to reference it later. That being said, I don't care what people do with anything they paid their own hard earned money for.

One of my favorite reading experiences has been annotating a book and passing it on to a friend to read next, and they annotate back to me. When they're done reading I go back and skim the book to read their comments. Like an out-of-sync book club!

I used to keep all my books in pristine condition but i gradually started annotating starting with underlining the lines that I liked and now i highlight, write in the margins and tab my books too. I love doing it so much. Like you said, I want my books to reflect me and my journey as a reader. I also find it very nice when I lend someone my books and they can read all of my annotations, it feels so nice!!

I dont usually annotate, but as an english student ive been doing it more and more because it helps me when i write papers or discuss them in class! I also just recently started reading "I am not your perfect Mexican daughter" and theres some spanish words in there that are slang and so ive been defining them in the top and bottom margins which has been really helpful!

There are some books that I've annotated, just because it GRIPS me in a way some other books don't. I don't do the tab thing because I am not that organized, but I underline, I write things in the margins, et cetera. It is a preservation of a sort; preservation of ME. I was HERE, I read this BOOK, I LIKED it.

I didn't even know that some people are anti-annotating! I don't do it much, but I do enjoy it when reading classics or favorites. I also love used books with other peoples annotations, its so interesting to me to see other people's thought process! I think there's something badass about committing to permanence (as you said, a strength) in the form of marking up your book. Looking forward to more of your videos!

You are a great addition to Booktube! I am an annotator. I love how you provided historical examples, but also reminded us that as student we were encourage and taught to annotate our books. As an English major, I purchased physical copies of the books that we read in class, because I really want to delve in the text. I also want to bring up your points about capitalism. I think social media has encouraged or influence users to buy all the nice things and keep them nice, rather than purchase what you like and enjoy your purchase. If people are worried about buying books, VISIT the library. If you can't physically visit the library, try elibraries. Try and obtain an ecard that you can take out ebooks and audiobooks. I work at my local library and I am always encouraging people to visit their local library or make requests to add to the library collections.
Sorry for the long comment! You are inspiring me to get back to creating videos.

Welcome to Booktube!! :) No one should judge you for annotating books with a pen, that's fair. ❤ I consider books as shared resources, whether they are owned, borrowed or bought second hand. So to keep pages clean for everyone, I prefer to use post-it notes and tabs to flag quotes, jot down questions, and reference back to key points. It's like a mini book club in the margins! For library books, tabs and post-its allow me to annotate with minimal damage to them. If I like a book a lot, I buy my own copy and transfer my annotations. 😄

personally the best part of annotating is that you end up with this object that morphs into a confessional of unrestricted black ink lines and scrowls, mixed with post.its and tabs, of unfiltered thoughts, favourite lines, and, literally, confessions of how you actually feel without dreading someone else ever finding them

When it comes to nonfiction books, I love annotating and I have to do it because otherwise I will not really take in what I have read. I keep my books nice for myself, because i dont like having books that look like theyre about to disintegrate. Its fine what others want to do with their books, I dont care. But if I let some borrow my book they better not be damaging it anyway, no underlining, no highlighting, no dog earing, no bending and damaging the cover or the back, none of that. The spine will likely already be broken because I have likely read it already, but if people want to damage my property they can simply not borrow my things.
I also dont annotate, or highlight or underline, or any of that because that sounds like work, unnecessary work, when reading is meant to be for enjoyment and entertainment. Why would I make something I enjoy into something thats not enjoyable. If you enjoy doing that stuff more power to you, its just not my thing so Im not going to.
In school I remember I also did the bare minimum required with note taking. And I never did annotate books because it actually distracted me from my reading immersion and wasnt helpful for me to retain information, same reason I didnt note take during lectures.

I mark my nonfiction. They're books I want to keep and go back to, but with my fiction books, I just want to read them for fun and if I don't like them, I give them away. Now, it may be different if I ever get into older classic books. As for 'damaging' my books, if I buy it new, I tend to want to keep it as new as possible, but if I buy them 2nd hand, I love a somewhat damaged book as long as they aren't underlined, highlighted or massively written on.
