I was expecting Trebs, even though BBC are better, and was surprised during 3 when you said no siege in top 2. Trebs are often why you go up to Imp, especially if your civ doesn’t get BBC. They create a sense of inevitability.
Can confirm the Janissary is OP... I played a 2v2 the other day with an Italian teammate against Koreans/Spanish on nomad, I got castle dropped and destroyed by conqs (11 vills) left, but I got a castle up in my teammate's base, and with only a handful of jannisaries and a growing group of genoese xbows, while having barely any eco, we still managed to push and destroy the opponents. Outranging mangonels was absolutely key
I'm surprised about condottiero not making the list, they feel really strong out of the gate in imperial age
I guess usually when you get it, you already have a bunch of infantry upgrades, and without it it would be much weaker?
@@PauxloE Yeah 0 pierce armor for a unit that costs 35 gold is really bad. 10 melee damage is not that good in imperial age either.

See, I didn't think of that until the last second before he revealed number 1. I was either thinking knights or janissary for number 1, and then I really paid attention to the war elephants and was like, OH! And then he said janissary. Maaaaann...you almost had me.
This is my biggest weakness as a mid/low player, I get stuck in a cycle of feeling like I can't attack until I get upgrades X,Y,Z. Your tip about mangonels feels like it will really up my game.
Yeah, this is/was hard for me. Sometimes I get over it sometimes I don't.

Interesting topic... makes me excited to jump into a game and try some of these out. I never played the Turks much but I can't wait to try out the Jans and Mangs combo in early Castle.
I am surprised that there was no honorable mention for the Hand Cannoneer. It is not a super strong units, but if you are not getting any upgrades, it is definitely a powerhouse compared to other units in the Imperial Age. This is why the Hand Cannoneer is the go to unit in a Fast Imperial build.

Villager. Low cost, available from the Dark Age, used correctly can overpower combined army of any other units.
It needs loom upgrade, wheelbarrow, double axe, ...
A very good video would be some tips on when to get certain upgrades (for example, separate videos for eco upgrades and for military upgrades). When is it worth spending resources for military upgrades vs doing other things (more vills or more army)?
BTW, Janissaries are the only unit who has 0 (0.4 for non-elite version) attack delay before shots hence why it is easy to micro them

Will you ever make a DM tier list for team games? I know their ain't many of us but all the vids on youtube are for RM early game weakness etc etc. Me and my friend play amazon 2v2v2v2 DM at least once a day and are loving it
Tbh, trebs should be in the top 5. Everyone rushes imp mainly to get access to this unit asap in like half of their matches

Only because it enables you to take down castles safely. Trebs aren't actually that good at their jobs though. That's why warwolf and especially kataparuto are insane techs. Warwolf means you win treb fights 99% of the time, and kataparuto improves pretty much everything about trebs, but most importantly the pack/unpack speed. You can actually "micro" japanese trebs to dodge enemy treb shots.
I’d love to see some small upgrades in the siege workshop like how the monastery is. Maybe like a 10% speed boost, a +1 pierce armor and some other small stuff.
I agree. Though....my no-siege playing ass would get steamrolled even harder by siege. lol.
What would be the best Infantry unit? Feudal Serjeants are quite strong IMO.

Hey Hera, I’m hoping you can answer this question or point me in the right direction to find the answer. I’m looking for some explanation on build times for castles. What’s the optimal speed you want it built at and how many villagers do you need to commit to it to get it built that quick?
Taking a lot of villagers off resources early in castle age to build a castle on your enemy is a big commitment ….. I want to know how quick it’ll be up with different numbers of villagers building it etc
(3t)/(n+2) is the formula for building speed where t is the time it takes for 1 villager to build it, and n is how many villagers building it.
Castles' build time is 200 seconds.
1 vill = 200 sec
2 = 150
3 = 120
4 = 100
5 = 85.7
6 = 75
7 = 66.66
8 = 60
9 = 54.54
10 = 50

I feel like all gun powder units are strong right out the gate.
Honestly hera you could do a full vid about units strength order with no upgrades, Especially generic. But it is important because often new playere fall back to expensive to tech into units when they can do some easy solution "like for example, enemy attacking with 10 knights and then ppl start teching into pikemen and inf armor when they already have cav armor and camels which needs no upgrading"
Don't Leitis attack faster then Knights as well? Their kinda like cataphracts I've found where the best counter is archers
Leitis have same attack speed as paladins and slightly slower then knights. They move faster then knight-line.

I feel like it would be nice to not only hear arguments why units are included in this list, but also a few words about their specific order. What does the Leitis lack that makes e.g. the mangonel better? If you only list positive reasons right of the bat, it feels less satisfying going to the higher ranks.

I think hand cannons deserved an honourable mention, especially Bohemian ones in castle age. Obviously janis are better than them, but not needing a castle means you can make so many of them and they should be in the top 5 imo, better than mangos arguably.

I personally don't like the inclusion of Siege or Monks on this list. Those have their place, but their function is very straightforward. I was hoping this would be a list showing units like the Letis that it's probably better short term to spam than prioritize upgrades in a close game. It also feels weird when you look at Siege having 1-2 techs, minus advancements to the next unit, to benefit them while others have the full blacksmith line of techs.
I'd love to see the top 5 for units that you can create for major impact without investing in a full tech switch or needing to prioritize upgrades to trade efficiently. I think we all know Mangos and Bombard Canons are super strong out of the gate, but Letis is one I'm not as familiar with.

Haven't watched this yet, but my immediate thoughts include the knight, the treb, the conquistador, the janissary and possibly the monk and the mangonel.

I would actually add Steppe Lancers and Shrivamsha riders to the honourable mentions.
Although they're very situational, but in their niche, there's deadly.
Steppe Lancers really need upgrades tho otherwise they just die to archers

I originally thought knights, but figured it was Conquistadours and Organ Guns at #s 1/2.
I thought it's more generic list (no unique units) so mine would be: knight, monk, mangonel, treb, Hand cannon
The Arambai do benefit from Ballistics, stable and archery range/armor upgrades.
When I played portugese on arena between their berry buff and their organ gun nerf I had an 80% win rate at around 1100k elo. Up from about a 50% win rate. Castle, Oragan Guns, Rams/Magonels, and monks behind to get the relics.

Jannissary was the first unit that came to mind
without watching the vid, its probably going to be a bunch of gunpowder units as they only get archer armor. ie. conqs, hand cannons. Also siege technically. Some units with high stats as well.

1) Chu-Ko-Nu (8 base dmg plus extra arrows against high pierce/siege units)
2) Shotel Warrior (16 base dmg)
3) War Elephant (450 HP, 15 dmg, 1/2 armor)
4) Janissary
5) Conquistador
What about Korean war wagon, they have extra pierce armor for free. Technically no upgrades

The fondness for nerfing Gunpowder UU's has the Jassinary sweating.
Although, there being another civ that collects gold better than the Turks will be a good diversion for nerfs during the next balance patch.

I know youre not a big fan of teutons. but i think the teutonic knight should have been on the list. ..honorable mention for sure. especially with their incredibly fast production time. theyre tanks with no elite upgrade. {my opinion}
I think they're just too slow and easily countered. They're strong individually and in a niche situation (melee fights). But outside of that...hard to justify even the upgraded ones. And notice how he justified all of these without mentioning pairing them with something else until after justifying them individually. He didn't even count relics for Leitis.

Yeah turks castle drop is insane, stronger than their fast imp and so hard to stop. Only britons do so easily with 8 range xbows.

Rams are kind of trash without the capped ram upgrade, at the very least. There's a reason half the campaign levels where you can't advance to Imperial Age let you research capped ram as compensation.
