      Acoustic guitar doesn't need a huge amount if you ask me. Subtle compression, EQ, a small amount of reverb (or even none if it's in the right room). This is an amazing free reverb - valhalladsp.com/shop/reverb/valhalla-supermassive/. I use it mainly for getting really big and weird reverb and delay effects.

    I notice that you use normalize a lot when you’re mixing and editing audio, are you doing that mostly to raise the volume back up after it’s quieted it down due to using the equalizer or compression?

    • @JoeAtClaricast
      @JoeAtClaricast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The normalize plugin in Audacity can be useful to easily increase the level of a quiet recording, or to easily change the level before exporting.
      Generally though, when mixing I always aim to change the output/makeup gain of an EQ or compressor so that the volume doesn't change. This is much easier in other DAWs that have real-time effects (which Audacity should be getting in the future).

    Hi, for example ai have 10 tracks and want apply RMS level to all tracks it doesn't work. I need to select one by one the track and apply the effect. Have you any solution? I loose a lot of time to select one by one all tracks but if I select all tracks by ctrl +A the affect will not work fine

    • @JoeAtClaricast
      @JoeAtClaricast  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, I believe you would need to export and apply as a whole once you've balanced everything. To be honest, I'd consider downloading another DAW for more advanced things like that though. And get a third party mastering plugin like Youlean.

      @@JoeAtClaricast Hi, I need a Daw where I can select for example 30 tracks and add RMS Level and Peak Level, start the button and the software apply it to all 30 tracks. Which software can you suggest? Thanks

    • @JoeAtClaricast
      @JoeAtClaricast  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zenkidpress2271 Hmm... I'm not sure. I normally do things manually but don't have so many tracks to do at once. Any DAW that lets you use third party plugins will be fine, it's more down to which plugin will do it. Possible Waves PLM. Or something from Izotope (e.g. a new version of Ozone). Maybe worth having a look at those two.
      They all let you do trials too. But most free DAWs don't allow for third party plugins.

    Hello what is a suggested order to use the effects so one effect doesn't impact on the other effect process. With a vocals for example, would this order work? Start with Normalize to remove any noise on the track. Then click remover if needed. Then EQ or Filter curve, then Compressor, then Reverb and-or Eco, Then Amplify? Then finally limiter for mix down. Interested in your view. Cheers Dave

    • @JoeAtClaricast
      @JoeAtClaricast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave, It depends on the situation. But normally I would go subtractive first, then additive. Like you have suggested. Remove the nasty stuff that shouldn't be there (like noise). Adjust the level balance across all tracks using faders/normalize. Then you're ready to mix with EQ, comp etc. Wet/dry effects last like reverb. But it really depends on the situation.
      Try to think it through like "do I want to EQ this noisey signal?" "No, I want to EQ a clean signal". Or, would a guitar delay or reverb come first in the real world? I would say that a guitarist would likely be using a delay pedal, which would then be reverberated in the room/hall they're playing in.

    Nice! Also excellent background music! Also, is there a way to normalize a specific frequency or a sort of headphone equalization where the audio remains the same volume but without clipping?

    • @JoeAtClaricast

      Thanks! Do you mean you want to EQ something without changing the level?

    • @SquirrelTheorist

      @@JoeAtClaricast I think so! It's a feature that came with the Windows speaker environment that levelled the audio to the point where it sounded the same at any time. I wish I knew the name but I forgot. Thank you so much for getting back with me!

    • @JoeAtClaricast
      @JoeAtClaricast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can I ask what you're using Audacity for? I personally wouldn't rely on any kind of Windows settings to normalize your audio. I would ensure that you're level matching whenever you apply an effect. I did a video on this that will help - th-cam.com/video/ptk2HBFsWMQ/w-d-xo.html.
      Ultimately, if you EQ something and it ends up dropping the loudness by 3dB, you could then use the Normalize or Amplify tool to increase it back up by 3dB. This is much easier with real time plugins where you can control the output level of the plugin. But it's possible with Audacity by doing it manually. If you're struggling with clipping when you bring it back up, you could use compression to even things out, or manually adjust levels of certain peaks if there are only a few.
