Guns, drugs and cash. Welcome to the world of high-powered bank robberies. But what pushes someone to risk everything to rob a bank? In this probing and character-led documentary, several convicted robbers candidly discuss their crimes. Why is bank robbing so addictive? We also hear from those at the other side of the gun, left traumatised and scarred. Made for ABC Australia s renowned Four Corners Strand, this is a disturbing insight into the human cost of bank robberies.
I didn t have to say a word, just walked in there with a shotgun. People didn t assume I was looking for a home loan, boasts convicted bank robber Anthony. It s like your own little Wild West and you re running the joint, The thrill of power, along with the promise of lots of cash, has proven irresistible time and again for bank robbers. However, for the victims of their crimes, the trauma refuses to go away.
Pam is one such victim. She was a senior bank employee whose life and career were turned upside down after she was brutally attacked in a robbery. One of them had a gun, one had iron bars, one had a hunting knife. So it wasn t the type of thing you could really argue with, she murmurs. When Pam delayed handing over the keys to the safe, she was physically assaulted. He hit me from behind and pushed me into a metal door, she recalls. She was left with a slipped disc and still suffers from back spasms today.
Pam s distress was further compounded by the callous attitude of her employers. On returning to work, she was told she would be demoted, despite 25 years of loyal service. I was basically asked to sign documentation to reduce my position from a managerial status to a clerk, she explains. Unsettlingly, her case seems typical. Far from helping traumatised workers like Pam, banks often demote or dismiss them.
However, victims can at least expect sympathy from one unlikely source. Anthony, a born-again Christian, once committed 4 armed robberies in 16 days. He was arrested when his mother recognised him on the local news and turned him in. Now only the dense web of tattoos along his limbs points to his murky past. He is contrite and ashamed, adamant that he will repay his victims, even if, as he calculates, it will take him until he is 93. I fully understand everyone in those banks hating me, he admits.
Unfortunately, most robbers are not as repentant. Some are startlingly flippant about the emotional damage they have caused. They ll tell you anything that they can t go to a counter any more because they ve got some sort of phobia that they ve created that s absolute bullshit. All they re trying to do is jump on the gravy train, an anonymous robber remarks. His words jar nastily with Pam s palpable distress.
Worryingly, bank robberies seem to be becoming more violent and unpredictable. Fuelled by a cocktail of drugs and adrenaline, the robbers are oblivious to their victims pleas. You re in the car, you have a shot. Throw the needle on the floor, go in, produce your gun. Mate that s the biggest adrenaline buzz ever. It s better than bungee jumping, enthuses an anonymous robber. And until the banks can fork out to provide better security, their own employees will continue to pay the price.

I remember, working as a bank teller for the Rural Bank of NSW Kings Cross Branch, 1977 all of 18 years of age. Me and the Loans Officer, being Kings Cross, we would have to transfer foreign currency down to Head Office when the total of Foreign currency got to a certain limit. One day in particular I remember, being young, and first time living away from my parents, on this particular day I did not wear any underpants to work. Here am I, with Dave, the loans officer to do a transfer down to Head office. I was given, what I now know was a revolver, which I shoved down my underpantless pants, walked up to the Taxi Rank in Darlo rd., (The branch at that time was at the top of William St.) the loans officer had a leather satchel with the Foreign currency and I was his back up. Hehe, we both both got cabs. I got into the one behind the Loans Officer, and I stated in my best James Bond voice, "Follow that Cab." What a lark. We walked back from "down town" as we could pocket the $2.60 taxi fare at the time. I remember having one session learning how to shoot, and the gun being beside me whilst serving customers. It's all a bit of a haze as it was the time of Terrance Clark and the Heroin epidemic, and as a young country boy with self esteem issues, I soon developed a habit. Never scored at the Cross at the time, used to rush down to Bronte in my lunch time in my newly acquired, bank loaned, 1975 VW Bug, L. Get back to the bank, have a taste in the toilet and back to serving all sorts. Yeah, I survived, prospered, survived, prospered, many times. Clean now for a decade and a half, with such gratitude to have done so and to have the memories, and to have met those that I have met. .

I remember some of my robberies in the 70s and 80s . I never seen any bank workers with guns, But i did come across armed guards with pistols but we use to take their guns as a added bonus. The 80s were the most robberies mostly done by drug addicts . Some would do ten in a month . They would be out of jail 3 months and do 30 banks.

I like the robbers. I dislike the banks, they get everything they deserve, especially the ANZ. And why would you want to work for them, represent them, especially in higher rolls like manager? Do they not have a conscience? Maybe they also deserve some of the trauma and violence inflicted on them. After all, they have heard of bank robbers so must understand the risks. Risk is what banks work on, it is part of their expertise. Banks are aggressive and ruin people's and families lives without batting an eyelid. The ANZ knowingly transferred finances for a global child sex slave syndicate with no repercussions.
I knew a bank manager, and she would party on the weekend and get off her tits on ecstasy only to walk in on a Monday and approve loans and handle people's finances. Some bank workers deserve the treatment.

Wait! How can this possibly be happening in Australia? How can there possibly be ANY "armed" crimes?? I thought the Australian government took everyone's guns away.

Incorrect, guns laws were simply tightened. There are literally millions of registered firearms in Australia and hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons floating around

The cardinal rule of a bank robber NOT to hurt anyone is a contradiction in terms, considering that the bank employees who fall victim to these callous acts, are usually left hurting "mentally" for the rest of their lives! 😨🔫

One of the most outrageous (even worse than the robbers) is this oinker David Bell, who conveniently doesn't know anytbing or will answer anything about the ethics of banks vamping down on the victims of robberies. "They (the victims) should speak to their bank..." 36:17 and : "It is very difficult..." - 36:35. What a sociopath. Of course, it is "very difficult to answer that question", because he is totally bereft of any moral compass. Then, like all these foul banksters, he lies about things: 3:57 and 36:53. He belongs in a labor camp where he could do something useful for once in his parasitic low life.
Overall, there should bve no private banks. Either they should be nationalized or in the form of cooperatives, full stop.

Don't know how things work in Australia regarding procedures during a bank robbery. But if robberies are being conducted by druggies, most probably meth, i can bet that they would not think twice on killing a patron wanting to be a hero. That is the worse thing you can do. At least in America, money is insured by FDIC. Even If I am armed, which most times I am, I will do whatever I am instructed to do by the robbers. I will not be responsible for the murder of an innocent person or worker. I have been to Australia, I walked into a bank on several occasions. This was in the 2010's I don't recall seeing a guard. Handguns are not easy to come by, however rifles and shotguns are available in regional areas to put down kangaroos or emus since they are consider a pest in agricultural industry. Violence is necessary to keep people in check, do what there are there to do, in and out.

It's the same in Australia - your money is insured.
Regarding guns, rifles and shotguns are available to your average person here, whether they live in rural or metropolitan areas. Handguns are also legal, though they're signicantly harder to acquire (six months minimum application period). But they're not overally uncommon; there's about 250 thousand handguns in legal, private possession in the country, and who knows how many illegal ones. I've been around the block, including prison, and handguns aren't too hard to come by. They're more expensive (so I've been told) than they were in years gone by, but not too difficult to acquire if you have a few grand to throw around.

Ever sine that retard went in a shooting in Tas, the fucking gov made it very hard to acquire, and it must be kept in an approved safe. If you use it dunning . a home invasion, you can't use it, if you kill, you may go to jail, shit even a shot in the foot. You are liable for his fucking care. I chatted with a bloke that played rugby, and got a bad injury that stopped him from playing. The fucking health dep has but a vice grip on all meds with opiods in them. He is in constant pain but his GP can't give him more or he will loose his lisence. That is fucked in my eyes.
