Recently I started using my Garmin 1030 to follow routes and tracks from trailforks. It's very powerful and as you guys indicated, very convenient to have all the information on your GPS in front of your face while you ride. I've done this for years on motorcycles with a Garmin having a route in front of me. It's absolutely necessary to save a lot of time when you're riding in places that you're not familiar with. Lots of time gets wasted when pulling maps in and out of your backpack to navigate. The only downside is that if you don't have your own route, then you're just following other people's routes, nevertheless that still saves you a lot of time if you're traveling.
Garmin Vaira tail light/radar unit is a game changer for road riding. Tells you when cars are behind you. Also pair it up with a heart rate monitor. I put my HR %MAX on my main screen for MTB and use it as my "RPM Gauge" so I know when to push hard and when I am blowing up. Turn by turn directions on the road are a game changer too as now I make new fun routes and don't worry about getting lost.
@@fendermon I have the 530. For me the 830 touch screen was not worth it. Too easy to make it nasty with sweaty hands. Only time I see the touch screen as an advantage is during initial setup. I don't care about navigation to a particular address or place which is the only thing the 830 offer in the navigation that the 530 does not. No regrets on choosing the 530 over the 830.
Mountain biker here mainly trail rider I use trailforks mounted on my handle bars Have a heart rate monitor on my watch what will I really get out of this that I’m not getting out of my phone I’m interested in the garmin just not sure if it’s worth the cost Any opinions ?
FYI I'm on my 3rd edge 830 due to shattering the screens (similar used in the 530). I've had good luck dealing with Gamins customer service, but replacements are about $150 out of warrantee ... Garmin please make your screens/devices more durable, the trusty old Edge 800/810s were tanks in comparison!
@@skullsroad3642 Yep, installed a tempered glass protector on day 1 for both units, cracked underneath the protector with minimal impact. Old edge screens were plastic, new ones are glass; had 3 years on the 810 without this being an issue.
I've used a 510 for a number of years and like it. It came in handy when I did Macky's Everesting challenge in July. I was surprised at the additional features in the 530 but I don't use all of the features of the 510 so I won't be moving up to the 530 until my 510 craps out.
I have an older Edge 200 and I love it. I broke my first when when I went OTB and knocked it off the mount with my knee. It landed face down on a rock. I hesitate to buy anything more expensive.
Would you recommend the 530 still? Did it ever start working again. I keep reading as many bad things as I do good and never used a bike computer before.
I am an 'Android People' with a Wahoo! However I must admit that it is cool to see young people supporting products designed for the elderly : ) Mostly pure sarcasm, Wahoo and Garmin units are great, Apple is, well, Apple.
Great breakdown although a few things I am not sure how to set up and you did not get into. For instance is climb breakdown actually Climb Pro? If so you need the route loaded in already in order for it to work.....is there any way to see the same climb breakdown without the route loaded in already (if I am on a new ride and don't have the route loaded in but want to use this feature is it possible?).
Thank you. You lead off describing a key navigation feature that I have been researching, and made it really really easy to understand, yet technically accurate. However, your Competitive Cyclist promo code doesn't apply to the device being recommended. CC should have stepped up on that one.
Are you able to use trail forks and log a ride at the same time? DO you have to pre load a ride or can you just use trail forks as you would use the app on a phone?
Great video but I’d switch your comparison. Wahoo is way more like Apple and vice versa. The user interface and “just work” feel make the Wahoo feel more like an apple product to me.
Interesting mite have too invest in one of these. I have noticet Trailforks not free no more it only does the local area you’re in as iam Australian..... ?? Does this Garmin tell you all the trails ,,
I have the edge 520 and love it, I see some better features on the 530 but not enough to make me go for it until mine is dead. I totally agree with you about the 830, touchscreens are not for MTB, using a cellphone is hard enough with gloves, sweat and dirt. Quick question, has anyone found a way to avoid it switching screens when approaching to a featured trail? mine changes to the virtual partner screen as soon as I approach a starred trail, I just can’t figure that one out.
If I traveled and rode new trails as much as y'all, then I would definitely invest in one. Local riding, I just use my ancient TomTom gps watch and upload to apps. Great breakdown of the unit, thanks!
This looks awesome! I ride motorcycles as well as mountain bikes. Since this has a GPS for regular streets, is there any reason why I couldn't use the GPS function while riding my motorcycle? Thanks.
You could go with a watch as well but a computer is nice to have so that you have it right on your handlebars. I used to have a watch and it would always get hit when I was riding. It’s just personal preference! -Hannah
You might want to add that your discount code doesn't work on garmin. Seems like you'd want to mention that since that's what you're promoting in this video.
Watch the whole clip dude. They say the buttons on the 530 are fine when you get used to them, and the touchscreen on the 830 is unreliable when it gets covered in sweat, etc.
good question!! We haven't used it on an e- bike ride so we can't say but there's an activity profile on my Garmin for e-bike rides. I also just looked into it and it looks like there's an app called bike filed on gamin connect that you can put on your Garmin in order to see battery, mode, etc!
Strange to compare Garmin to Apple instead of Android because Garmins have more functionality with Android like replying to messages from your device. As a mountain biker is exchanged my 530 for an 830 a month ago for 2 reasons. 1) if/when you deviate from your route it's much easier to scroll through the map using a touchscreen than buttons and 2) I had problems clicking both buttons on the left and right side of the unit at the same time when I only wanted to click one or the other. This because I had to hold the unit with my thumb while pressing with my index finger to avoid the unit from twisting on the mount.
He really said "Apple" has more 3rd party compatibility. That tells me they've never used any OnePlus, Google or Samsung phones. Probably thinks a "droid" is a phone.
