Ireland should have adapted the Swiss Model of neutrality, a small but well equipped and capable military with conscription.
Switzerland has the highest gun ownership in Europe, but the lowest ammunition. Switzerland has national service an air force, but is land locked.
The Swiss aren’t EU members and have voted not to become one. If the EU start their own army you will be paying in.
Who exactly are we in danger of being invaded by?

We do 100%, and hide behind "neutrality" as it saves us investing in defence. Switzerland is also neutral but has a strong and well respected military.

Ireland has never been serious about the armed forces because we can freeload. I'd go as far as to say , we as nation lack dignity when it comes to having a proper and fit armed forces. Our 'navy' is joke, how many boats are moored up due to lack of personal...one would be forgiven for thinking that we are not an island nation!
I strongly suspect the top brass are to blame also, have the rank, salaries and entitlements but do little, probably the same for lower rank officers too. Time for Ireland to man up and also consider conscription too with proper working conditions and salaries.

I have worked with former Irish navy officers aboard vessels in the North Sea. They are consummate professionals.

Europe is not a country
There is no logical reason to have left our defence forces and navy so weak. It is down to nothing other than political incompetence, as we see repeatedly in Leinster House. They pay themselves outrageous salaries and pensions, but don't want to invest pittance in the country's defence.
Leinster house is full of EU puppets they have no interest in Ireland as a nation.they would happily let the Irish military decay more to a point where we would have no option but to join nato for some sort of defensive.

The world needs more neutral, non-biased countries, as places to conduct peace negotiations and help end wars. Ireland is a small Island, with a small population with no historical enemies. Ireland can serve the world much better by not engaging in foreign wars and strictly enforcing policies of neutrality.

Twenty years ago, no-one would have commented on Ireland's level of defence spending. The huge success of Ireland's tax status and EU investment has inevitably generated a view from European neighbours that it is time for a payback, with a credible contribution to european defence. Difficult to argue against it and sympathy will disappear very quickly if Ireland responds in a slow or unenthusiastic manner.
You voted out of the EU and then got forced into another vote to make sure you stayed in.

Neutrality means nothing when you cannot defend yourself from any attack physical and Cyber Attacks, whether you like it or not Ireland is an Island without an effective Navy, Radar or Sonar to protect basic international communications.
That's rich. Britain depends on US and NATO for its national security. A Brit Ministry of Defence report in 2023 found that all branches of the seriously underfunded British armed forces combined did not have the capacity to defend the greater London area for more than 48 hours before capitulating against a major power (Russia, China etc). That said, the idea that our neutrality status will save us is innocent in the extreme. We need to build a viable armed forces with strong air defences, land and sea capabilities. Not the toy army, that does its best, that we have now. Smaller European countries like Denmark, Finland, Austria and Estonia can do it, so should we.
While your point has legs. Britain is a member of NATO and GCHQ is fundamental to nato. Britain is one of the few compliant contributors to nato, well before the Trump threats, from 2016 and this year.
Yes. There's no reason Ireland shouldn't have a bigger navy considering the size of our waters and at least a squadron of military jets and a missile defense system. The problem is government is horrible managing our financial resources to pay for it.
Fighter Jets aren't that expensive too, you can get decent ones for around $60M to $80M, and cheaper buying in bulk. The Swedish JAS 39 Gripen, of variants C and D, is one of the cheapest new 4 or 4.5 generation fighter jets around. Its cost could go as low as $30 million per piece. We could build a decent airforce as capable as any other in a few years with the right budget.
Considering that we've invested €2 bn in Ethiopia over the last decade, allowing their government to invest in an advance air force and modern military equipment, it's a bit rich that we don't have a proper army and navy ourselves.

Ireland should have mandatory 6 month military service for teenagers in basic weapons training.. if we are attacked we wouldn’t even know where to start in trying to defend ourselves without the help of other countries.. also it might teach the worse of our young people some respect and discipline.. also the British army is a skeleton of what it once was so we can no longer rely on them to defend us in the event we are attacked

Neutrality and peacekeeping is an active choice that benefits Ireland. NATO has been rampaging around the world since the bombing and destruction of Yugoslavia leaving a trail of devastated countries around the world from Afganistan to Syria , Iraq, Libya and many others . The Irish government freeloads of the British military but most of all they freeload off the hard working Irish people. The Irish people desperately need better and Ireland has untapped potential if they get a sensible non-woke government in.

The position of Ireland vis-a-vis the UK is similar to NZ and Australia or Canada and the US. In each case the smaller country can afford to not take defence seriously because they know that their larger neighbour will ultimately take care of their defence. Similar debate here in NZ.
Remember the situation during WWII, British forces garunteed Ireland's independence from Germany.

Ireland would be far better having an airforce of about 250 craft and then a missile defence force to work in conjunction with that airforce. And to augment that a series of small rapid response naval vessels and then several larger expeditionary vessels to patrol the full area of Irish waters.

Ireland is going to need a €100 billion investment in the defence for a proper naval and airforce that can patrol and defend Irish waters. It would be easier to have a large airforce and smaller navy that can both work in tandem.

A navy capable of patrolling Irelands waters and also defending the whole Island would cost far more than 100 billion. It would be far cheaper to have small navy that is augmented by an airforce that would be capable of defending Ireland. Such an airforce would be capable of defending Ireland over 1 million square miles of ocean. Such a defence force would make it very difficult for Ireland to be invaded. 100 billion is nothing for the defence of the isle of Ireland and the existence of its people.

Our political parties and civil service having been downgrading our defense forces for years. A real neutral democracy should have a sufficient defence forces to protect our seas, air and land. When they removed a full time minister from defence 13 years ago that was the signal that our defence was was not sufficiently important.
We are grand! stay neutral Ireland does not need to belong to the head banging militarists that cause so much damage globally, invest some more in our own military to make it somewhat effective in the face of a potential enemy. A small air force equipped with modern jets, an effective missile defence system, a fully crewed naval service and a small standing army, these things cannot be beyond the means of a relatively wealthy country.
Neutral nations are not defenseless. We are defenseless so are not neutral. A neutral nation needs some form of defense capability in order to underline and back up its neutrality. We need at least 2 squadrons of fast jets, full coverage radar, a new fleet of navy ships with anti-submarine capability, and a layered air defense system. This is the minimum.

Ireland's Defence Forces do require considerable investment and they will likely get it as a consequence of the new world dynamic that has developed over the past few years. Ireland is a small country it will always have a small military.

Here is a reality nobody wants to face up to. Ireland needs an upfront investment into the defence forces of about €100 billion and then about 3% of gdp which is about 10 to 15 billion spent every year. And that is just to catch up with other European militaries in about a decade.

Perspective is important here. Ireland has economic limitations that will always restrict what it can realistically do in terms of equipment and man power. Its one thing buying fighter aircraft, ships etc etc. You need the crews and professional people to maintain all that and it costs alot of money. Yeah you're cash rich but nothing scoops like defence spending. I think Ireland could do more but how about partnering with Britain and France to help train a competent land force and develop some naval or air defence?

As a Irish national.... I joined British army back in the in the 1970s, why because it was a professionally army, no question about it. Never had problems with it.

The British or NATO will probably start charging Ireland for its safekeeping at some stage, probably working out cheaper than investing in our own Army, but for now the freeloading is a nice arrangement 🤪

NATO is a collective security system: its independent member states agree to defend each other against attacks by third parties. Therefore, they do not have to protect Ireland and should only do so at a price. That's how they "charge" a fee, tell Ireland they won't help protect their sea cables or skies against the Russians anymore for free. Discouraging to say the least. Ireland needs to stop freeloading off the backs of the EU and British and whole heartedly join the NATO alliance. That would be the least expensive option. The neutrality option is allowing the back door to remain open for hostile actors and has always only favored countries like Russia who don't have to worry about you until they are ready to take you on. I am just surprised the EU hasn't said anything more publicly about this gaping security issue.
Long before Ireland could join NATO it would need to spend about 100 billion on its defence forces and spend between 10 to 20 billion per year.

Ireland is blessed purely by its geography, and so will probably carry on as normal until the tectonic plates shift the Russian borders a thousand miles west
I absolutely believe that Ireland should be in a position to protect itself, it's sovereignty and it's people - but that should be done with the full recognition that the only country that has ever threatened Ireland's security interests is Great Britain.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, we should be investing in our defence again. We should be putting our fair share of resources - we are totally exposed to any threat and need the UK to bail us out if anything ever happens. We will always be small but we need to start building something.

De Valera was prepared to defend Ireland from invasion from either Germany or the UK while being neutral. Modern Ireland has a population where there are no circumstances under which most of the population would defend their freedom or way of life from invasion. They would immediately surrender.
In Ireland over the decades after the Second World War, Irish people started to confuse neutrality with pacificism.

We pay a lot for this, and they use our airspace when they like. There's a lot we do to accommodate the Western military machine, so there's no piggybacking going on

That doesn't mean we don't need our own defense forces. If Russian jets/ships invaded our air space/ waters we would be straight on to the RAF to come save us.

Britains air defence systems are the very thing that protects Irish air space due to Ireland not having any ability to perform those duties. When it comes to rapid scrambling of air assets only Britain can do that for Ireland. Now that is an enormous risk factor.

Britain defends Irish airspace due to historical guilt out of the bad things that happened in the past and may also feel they have some responsibility for Ireland current state. It is not just for military incursions that they protect Irelands air space but for terrorism threats as well. There is an automatic assumption that Britain and the US will have the resources available when WW3 comes into play to protect Ireland.
It's got nothing to do with feelings of historical guilt. Most people in positions in the British army wouldn't know much if anything about anglo-Irish historical relations. I think its naive of you to make a statement like that.
States do not behave in altruistic ways, and the British state patrols Irish airspace because its in Britain's security interest to do so.
