  • I have been searching for this clip for a long time and I'm glad I finally found it.
    From the time I heard Vanessa Williams sing this live from Atlantic City at the Miss America Pageant I kinda knew that she was going to be crowned the winner. In my opinion a class act.

      @BamaFan1962 - one must be able to articulate, at least on a mediocre scale, to communicate effectively. Superior vocalisation is not simply in the eyes of a myopic beholder. Ms. Williams success was secured by a multitude of individuals who purchased her albums. Perhaps your backwater tastes reside elsewhere. Sluggin' Down The Sloppy (Moonshine) Shine by Backwater Booger maybe more in line with your taste in music, but that doesn't mean Ms. Williams is inferior. She simply isn't your cup of tea. So go grab your mason jar, take a swill of that of that distill, and leave vocal critique to those in the know...

      I don't know how you figure when there have been plenty of successful Miss Americas like Mary Ann Mobley and Phyllis George and Anita Bryant and Gretchen Carlson and Lee Remick. All of these women were huge stars of their day and just because you're not old enough to remember them or have some bias against them does it make this woman the best Miss America by a long shot. In point of fact she disgraced the crown by knowing she posed for pornographic pictures and not admitting it before she entered into a contest which forbid it.
      Of course today we have made mediocrity something to be proud of but every other girl in that pageant sign the same contract knowing what they expected from them.

    @Devon3579 - Of course there are very famous people out there who are famous based on their looks more so than their talent. However, since Vanessa has had a long recording career (25 years now), two starring roles on Broadway (both difficult roles, one of them a Sondheim lead), several starring roles in film and two successful television series, the ladies you compare her to are YOUR flawed premise. We'll see how long they last and how much they accomplish. Time will tell.

      Yep👌 unlike many of her peers, Vanessa is an Acclaimed Broadway Superstar with 2 being Sondheim. Her very first performance in "Kiss of the Spiderwoman" seen rave reviews on Broadway standing room only and extended to an 11 month run. A 14 time Grammy nominated classically trained singer who can actually act, a real triple threat.
      I totally agree with your comment.

    One pageant coach told me that Vanessa won because, in those days, judges were looking for talent that was "non-ethnic" to appeal to mainstream America. It was 1983/1984. A different time. Plus she won BOTH Talent and Swimsuit preliminaries. The latter put her over the top. Suzette Charles (first runner up) only won preliminary Talent. Hands down, both ladies ARE talented, but Vanessa was much stronger in the interview and swimsuit portions. Rumor has it that Vanessa beat Suzette out by only a few points.

    She came from a good family and actually had talent. I wonder what drove her to take those photos. On of the few contestants that actually had real talent. It's not how you fall but how you rise from the fall.

      Nothing "drove" her but being 18 and having a photographer sweet talk her into it.

      Geesh I stan Vanessa Williams I'm 47 and proud to be one of the few day1s who know her entire body of work from this moment forward and this is the most "puke worthy" com.sec I've ever stumbled into. Just to hear so many naive folk write things like "O Vanessa, you will always be my Ms. America, She's by far the best Ms. America ever" LOL this iish is laughable and downright disrespectful to read about the FIRST and probably only black "triple threat" of our generation. Not some fake media indused singer turned fake actress; cough ...Whitney H.) but a real 16x Grammy nominated classically trained singer and Broadway Superstar who can dance all her peers under a table, BTW. Her beauty unmatched, often otherworldly who could give two fuxs about an organization and title that destroyed every ounce of credibility and talent she came in the door with and threw it, in a toilet full of iish. THAT, my friends, is what she and her real ones think about her making history, as the first black Ms. America, a (scholarship program) for smart college educated girls. It forced her to endure shame, humiliation and forced this musical theater major to work twice as hard than her semi-talented cohorts coming up around the same time. Vanessa Williams is more accomplished and acclaimed across the arts than ANY of her peers, yes, including Whitney the crackhead, Toni, Celine, Mariah, Karyn White, Pebbles and Paula, except Paula can dance, still NO TRIPLE THREAT, yet, the masses may never know the entire resume Vanessa holds, obviously her industry of peers do, but yall won't, simply because of the Crown this trash organization bestowed upon her. It's even more crazy to think, most only know a song or two and maybe Ugly Betty by Vanessa, and you really think she cares a crumb about an happenstance that damn near ruined her life and career? Lol😂 I mean, Wow! just Wow!

    Actually, she was did NOT lose her scholarship money, NOR the jeweled crown; in agreement of her resignation, she was allowed to keep both my the MAO. Also, according to the MAO, she IS still acknowledged as a Miss America, aka Miss America 1984 (a), with Suzette Charles as Miss America 1984(b). You may check both the MAO website as well as going to the wikipedia site for Vanessa Williams.

      But lost over 2million in endorsements as the 1st Black Mrs.America had to hurt that time.

    • @Parker528
      @Parker528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dlw1221 the report at that time, as is and was with ALL previous and following winners into the late 90's, NO Miss America winner during her year as MA has EVER earned nor been on track to EARN over $150,000 in "endorsements and appearance/speaking fees. ONLY one time pre 1980 do we know that during a reign a Miss America earned far more was the winner of Native American ancestry, Norma Smallwood of Oklahoma in '26. She earned well OVER $100,000, and with inflation adjustment, (which i cant calculate) thats THE closest you'll ever come to $2 "million" in earned endorsements by an MA during her reign.
      if she WAS stripped of those monies she had already earned prior to her unfortunate albeit forced resignation, this is the first time ive heard of her personally losing her already completed and earned speaking fees and corporate endorsements. Now if you said to me that the MAO almost lost or did lose over $2 million in corporate sponsorships i even with/after her resignation- that i would believe.
      but she had no where NEAR to $200,000 (let alone your absurd $2 million) in earned endorsements nor did she have any coming to after her reign pre or post resignation, because it has been well known that she was intent on finishing college before her career.

      I think you are talking about the contract as a spokesperson for Lincoln Car Dealership for 5 years. The scandal

      @ahlahthecomedian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The contract would reportedly be valued at $500,000.00. Lost due to scandal. Not sure if the contract was $500,000 per year or 100,000 per year.

      neilbruce123 what she did to herself. Come on. In those days posing nude for penthouse was scandalous. At the end of the day she was strong enough to overcome the scandal and move forward. I don't think posing in salacious photos is a good role model however how she dealt and rose above diversity is. No one is perfect but you don't reward people for their downfall. Live and learn that's life. If she chose a different path like being an actress I don't think it would have been as scandalous but miss america is different.
