  • In this video on the Autobianchi/Lancia A112 abarth I continue the rebuild.
Last video I intalled the crankshaft, the pistons and camshaft. In this I install the cylinder head... But it does not go according to my plan.... Actually it goes completely wrong.

    Keep up the good work!
It seems smart to get the reinforced bolts to prevent that the head gasket goes bad again.
My very first car was an A112 abarth from 1985. My mom bought it when it was just one year old. Then my sister drove it and at last I got my hands on it 😊.
I really miss that car, I wish that I would have kept it but unfortunatly it rusted on the most strange places. Especially around the roof 🙄.

Its a great car! And yes, they do seem to rust very well!
I hope to use the original bolts actually.... But am investigating why the are so close to the breaking point at 68nm... Best explanation right now is that maybe the bolts should not be oiled... that will raise the tension at 68nm... Manual is very vague...

Honest video. Nothing you could have done to prevent this. But better now then when it’s running in the car. Keep it up!

Exactly... ! It seems to be an issue with the a112 bolts actually... im not the only one who have experienced this it seems... That helps a bit... ;)

There is lot of s..t under the sun. These bolts are brittle.
I would do a tension-test on the broken bolt-end, by using 2 long nuts on each side.
Metallurgical examination , e.g by doing micro hardness test would reveal the hardness. From this value you can back-calculate the mechanical properties.

Have you made sure the bolt holes are clear all the way down?

Completely clean.... but it turned out that these where stretch bolt, and the manual specs is with non stretch bolt apparently... :)

Nice video man! Just some help's needed here! How many steps do you need to install the bolts on a standard Autobianchi and what torque is needed?

Uhh... cant remember of the top of my head... but its important to know if you have stretch bolts or normal bolts.... :)

Unless it’s specified to do so, oiling the thread reduces the tightening torque.

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That could be the reason... :)

Thats exactly what I was going to say; workshop manuals should specify if threads are lubed or not when torque setting. That's why people advise against antiseize on spark plugs...

@@MaximumZargon That could solve the mystery... :)

Converting to studs and nuts may be an option

You dont need a new headgasket, its going to seal. Get a magnet so u you could have pulled that bolt off instead of turning the damn block.

Im not going to take that chance, but you could be right...
A magnet would be smart... :)

The head gaskets are very cheap in my opinion, it's definitely not worth the trouble of redoing it when you are already ordering new head bolts

In today's time it is normal that the bolds come from an unidentified asian bolt maker. They are stamped 10.9 but are in fact much lesser strong as you have experienced 2 times.
Any superior mechanic knowledge or workmanship doesnot help you here. It is better to use bolts from an old scrap engine, which are for sure the good ones.
