Lee Ji-eun, also known by her stage name IU, is a South Korean singer-songwriter, composer, and actress. She debuted as a singer at the age of fifteen with Lost and Found (2008). Kim Tae-hyung, known professionally as V, is a South Korean singer and a member of the band BTS. Since his debut with the band in 2013, V has performed three solo songs under their name-"Stigma" in 2016, "Singularity" in 2018, and "Inner Child" in 2020-all of which charted on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart. Outside of his projects with BTS, V appeared in the 2016 television series Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth and contributed the single "It's Definitely You" to its soundtrack. He released his first independent song, the self-composed "Scenery", in 2019. In 2023, V made his official debut as a solo artist with the release of the singles "Love Me Again" and "Rainy Days". His debut solo album Layover was released on September 8, accompanied by a third single, "Slow Dancing".

I have been saying this in other reactions -- V grabbing IU's hand is the best moment for me! The slight trembling, the intensity of the grip, the veins popping out. V definitely needs to be recognized for his performance here but his hand needs it's own academy awards category. And the best hand acting goes to.....Veeeee!!!!
The cube 'Nemo' represents the discrimination towards marginalized people (symbolized in IU being mute and Taehyung being blind in one eye).
They stayed together till the end with their love sustained, free from all oppression and pressure from society.

The director did say viewers can have their own interpretation.
The camcorder serves as a filter and allows imagination to roam freely. Everything is imagination through the camcorder.
Reality resumes when you see their wounds and tattered clothes.
In the end, the two of them are seen ascending to a better place through the camcorder, while they are eradicated in reality.
So sad. So beautiful. So brutally real.
About IU and V. IU has an interview show, "Palette" and invited V after he dropped his first solo album "Layover". You must listen to it, and his jazz and R&B songs. You can see the chemistry and friendship between them on the show. She sings one of his new songs. He sings a solo. Then they sing the most beautiful duet together. I hope they collab on an album together. IU isn't new. She is the #1 female singer in South Korea. She started as a trainee in 2007. And at age 15 started performing in 2008. IU can't hear and V’s one eye can't see ,in the end IU covered the good eyes of Taehyung so he won't see the horrible ending in front of them ,im Stuck at how a single tear from Taehyung’s good eye traced its path down his face and IU’s hand gently covered his eyes, It's as if he found a momentary refuge in her touch, offering a subtle relief from the overwhelming sensation ... AH I CAN'T STOP CRYING 😢😢❤

Here is some extra info about the music video... Director Um Tae Hwa released a guide explaining the MV and gave 4 Key points.
First, the "cube" signified the discrimination and oppression that are prevalent in the daily lives of the main characters.
Second, the "camcorder" represents the "lens of love," an important "device" that allows us to look at the beautiful things in the world beyond the internal or external appearance of the characters.
Third, IU and BTS V became the main characters in a "survival story of a dystopian worldview of someone who cannot speak and sees the world only through his left eye." Despite the difficulty, feeling hurt and exhausted, they relied on each other despite "cube" and tried to overcome it in the end.
Fourth and last, the "wedding dress and tuxedo" symbolize the "fruit of love." At the end where they are seen rising in the air, it depicts that they are finally "free to fly away from all kinds of oppression and pressure."

Thanks Cedric as always I loved your take on this, you picked up things other reactors didnt. I believe that IU asked V to do this and it was one of the last things he fitted into his schedule before military. The Behind the Scenes showd lots if takes of them running endlessly in freezing cold weather. IU seems to be friends with several BTS members, especially V and Suga - they have also worked together on songs, Eight and People2 i think, as well as appearing on each others shows Palette and Suchwita

V AMAZING acting out all these emotions of fear happiness sorrow furious, in a 5 minute music video is crazy because we see actors failing to act out a single emotion in an 1 hour long episode but here he is, the versatility is showing 😭They they forgot what they were running from because through the lens of the camera, they were able to just love and enjoy life until the reality caught up to them and they were taken away ICRY 😭😭

There are so many layers of story telling and metaphors and the director has explained what the storyline is. It’s a beautiful way for him to convey the message. In addition to this one part of my interpretation is based on the fact that Tae is blind in one eye and has burn scars around that eye. You can see at the beginning he is looking vulnerable, fragile and afraid. IU is leading him and is protective throughout. My interpretation is that he had encountered the cube before and narrowly escaped being captured and so is going through all the emotions from it. At the end, you see IU trying to protective him by picking up the metal bar because (to me) she knows what he went through and wants to protect him. And Tae taking the bar and attacking the cube looks to me like he knows what the cube is capable of and despite his fear of it, he wants to protect her. At the end it didn’t work and you can see the cube glow red with heat and smoke coming off their bodies (burn marks around his eyes). The ending was so poignant.
The song was amazing and felt more epic because of the storyline and visuals. They have great chemistry, first with the amazing duet they did on IU’s Palette and now with their acting skills, not to mention their interactions as friends. It’s so good to see Tae being able to express his acting skills even in a 5minute short. I hope he starts doing movies on his return. This movie really makes everyone feel emotional and they did that with their facial expressions, truly stunning. IU is queen for a reason and Tae our idol of idols never disappoints in his unique take on life and the choices he makes, whether to make an album of music he likes or to act in a short film all choices with a sad, emotionally moving ending. He wants his artistry to move us emotionally rather than hit the top spots on charts. Love these two artists. It’s time to stop calling this kpop.
These two with their amazing acting, packed in 5 mins all the emotions to convey the storyline (top tier level) that most kdramas do in 16 episodes.

And there are some great observations below too and they suggest this mv is really a metaphor or commentary about the present, not the future (the camera world wasn't so great, if you look carefully), although set against a dystopian backdrop - but fortunately for the mv characters and for us, love wins all.

wow one of the few that caught on to the deaf and blind in one eye good on you, so many didn't get it
my opinion is that if his blindness didn't matter, then he would still be damaged in the camcorder. Because in her eyes he'd be perfect whether he had it or not. She looks at him with such awe and strokes his face around his damaged eye because she feels such emotion at that damage being gone. I also think his blindness isn't natural, because all around his eye is damaged to. So this was done to him. So they are seeing each other without all the damage that the world has inflicted on them.

Thanks so much Cedric! I always love your analysis of mvs. I was never as big of a fan of IU's music as I was of her acting. However, I love this song. It has been stuck in my head on repeat off and on since it dropped. I was impressed by V's acting. He really has a passion for it. Luckily, he chose to give the world his music. During the solo period for BTS, I have been especially impressed by Suga's and V's acting skills. Recently Suga had an actress on his Suchwita show that he is in a friend group with and she said that all the actor friends think that Suga should go into acting. IU is a very unique singer and is known as a national treasure in South Korea.
She encountered financial difficulties in her family when she was a child, so she determined to become an "adult" who could support her own life earlier. Because she likes singing, she decided to be a singer. She hoped to connect the hearts between "I and YOU" through music with emotions, so she took the stage name "IU".
Originally, she wanted to be a traditional ballad singer when she debuted, but because too young, she did not gain much attention from the public in that time(when she is only 15).
Later, the entertainment company tried to package her as an idol singer and achieved great success (in the year she was 18). But when she became very popular with the public at the age of 21 with her beautiful appearance and cheerful personality, she decided to regain her original ambition and embark on a completely different path from ordinary Kpop......She remake songs more than 20-years-old, and re-introduced the popular culture of the previous generation to the younger generation, and received a very good response from public.
From then on, Koreans no longer viewed her as an idol with only a sweet image, but instead viewed her with respect as a real "artist of music" who contributed to popular culture.
In additional to her famous angelic voice just like moonlight, she is also known for her versatility and is an award-winning singer, music producer, lyricist, also a top-tier actress and model. She has many popular songs composed by herself.
Because she has held the belief that "love will eventually win" for many years, she wrote the lyrics and produce the project herself, and specially asked the film director she had collaborated with to film this MV.(The directer won the 2023 Blue Gragon Films Award of Korea)

IU wrote the song and Produced the MV.
First IU is the most successful singer in Korea. She debuted at 15 in 2008. And us today considered one of the very best singers in the world. In fact Rolling Stone Magazine says she is one of the 200 Greatest Singers All Time and they added her to their list in January of 2023.
She is also an outstanding actress. She has 8 female leading roles in kdramas including 3 of the most popular kdramas of all time. She has 3 commercial movies as the female lead. Including the movie Broker that premiered at Cannes Film Festival in Feb of 2022 where it recieved a 12 minute standing ovation and where she was nominated for Best Actress. And award she won at a number of other film festivals in 2022.
She is also a model for a number of national and global brands including being an Ambassador for GUCCI and Esty Lauder.
In the video IU can hear. This fact is shown in the video when she reacts to the sound of the cube passing overhead in the opening scene and again when they are inside. The lip ring is intented to draw your attention to her mouth and to give a visual que that she can't speak. This is confirmed by the fact that when seem through the lens of the camcorder the lip ring isn't present. Finally
You have the wedding scene where IU has a microphone and is singing. This also suggest that her lost of her voice is likely relatively recently and the result of an earlier interaction with a cube.
IU posted a letter on her companies website with some comments about the song and MV. She says that she is telling a story about the struggle for love when the world gets in the way.
She also said that love is invisible and so thinkingvthat love can defeat the physical manifestation of hate seems ridiculous at times. But hate is always alone and love is relentlessly together. Love can't destroy and hate can't create. Hate can destroy the physical and that's all. After which hate will always consume itself.
The image of the clothes pile was in fact inspired by the holocaust, NOT Spring Day.
IU has in addition to being added to Rolling Stones list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time as also been mentioned twice by the New York Times. Once in 2014 saying that IU was leadingvthecway forward for kpop and then again in 2018 in article on music's influence on culture. They created a list of the top 25 Influencers on culture. IU was listed 9th.
All of this for an artist who has never performed a concert in the West. Not until later this year as IU's World Tour includes stops I'm Europe and the 6 cities in the US.
Two of her most popular kdramas are on Netflix. Hotel Del Luna and My Mister.

oh this mv. oh this song. oh boy. i heard the song first alone and i was a bit taken aback because it seemed so intense. then i saw the mv and everything clicked and now it's almost a instant tear-inducer. every time i watch this mv. every. time.
i loved your comments and perspectives. especially the lighting which i had sorta noticed but hadn't followed through on. i hadn't noticed that their started smoking at the end! it blended into the background for me until you pointed it out.

JIN did not do musical theatre as he learnt how to sing and dance as a trainee for BTS. He went to uni for acting and has a BA . He also completed his masters. Good reaction.
Note. Jin was NOT in Musical Theatre. Jin Never sang before BTS. However, he was a theatre student. Jin was getting off a bus, and a Big Hit agent asked him to audition because of his visuals. His good looks. They knew nothing of his talent. And ironically, he knew nothing of his musical talent. They assigned him a voice teacher. He told her he couldn't sing. Then she did her magic. I had that happen to me. I always thought I was an alto. But taking voice lessons from a professional in college, I found out I was a soprano. SO imagine Jin after that voice teacher discovered his gorgeous velvety toned voice. He must have been in shock. He decided to hone his skills. His voice teacher said he was the hardest working voice student she ever had. And then became her favorite. He is still in touch with her. And invites her to concerts. Jin's belting voice is my favorite.
