The callers of today's show: 7:09 Richard - Defending the God belief with the argument from technological singularity. 23:33 Josh - Wants to share a story of spiritual deconstruction (rejecting hell, accepting evolution). 1:06:30 Tyler - Believes the bible adequately explains how life was diversified, therefore bible true. 1:16:53 Lee - There are only two sexes. 2:14:35 Hayden - Wants to talk about abortion and especially Forrest's biological view on it.
I'm an Xray technologist. As soon as I heard Lee go into complaining that we don't teach about atypical anatomical features, my mind went right back to my lessons on body habitus. It is very important in my job to be able to look at a person and make a well educated guess at what level, say, their stomach is at. Or where the diaphragm is. Lee reads as someone who very desperately wishes to have a smart sounding reason to dislike that the world is moving forwards without them.
Exactly. He needs to accept that things have moved on. There are unlimited genders. Woman, man, trans, fluid etc. Some relate to gastronomy and there are subcategories within relating to beverages in particular. And within those beverages there are achohol based and those with zero alcohol. Within the alcohol based beverages I’m tending towards the cocktail side of things and can’t help but feel I’m identifying most strongly with bourbon as the major ingredient.
He never argued about gender I don’t think. Are there more than two sexes in biology? Asexual I don’t think is is a different sex, it’s a combination of the two but even if it’s the third sex is there a 4th or more sexes?
@@russellg9622 Indeed, Lee didn't argue about the concept of gender being one distinct from biological sex. Their problem seemed to be not liking that new information about how we think about sex biologically is being taught (or perhaps being pushed to be taught) in schools (though they never specified where). Asexuality has to do with the physical act of sex and is a sexual preference in the same way that homosexuality, bisexuality, or heterosexuality are preferences. Asexuality simply means one does not have any desire to engage in the physical act of sex. If you want a really good break down of more current and nuanced understanding of biological sex (from this point on when I say sex, I will mean biologically) in humans, I'd suggest Forrest's video titled "Sex and Sensibility." It does a good job of going over the topic. If I were to attempt to summarize it myself, I'd say that it on a species level, it is not entirely incorrect to say there are two sexes in the human species. This does a good job of giving a simplified understanding of what sex is. However, as with all descriptions of the real world, this does not fully encompass the totality of variety within humans. For example, if you were to say that there are only ever possibly two sexes, male and female, based solely on XX or XY chromosomes, you would necessarily be excluding the existence of people who do not have that configuration of chromosomes. Even further down the rabbit hole, you can find people who have XY chromosomes, but with a functioning uterus. Reality is far more complex than our ability to condense it down into language or concepts. Simply put, as Forrest and Emma repeated in the call, there is nothing wrong with expanding our understanding of the topic to include more people. If I were to relate this back to my field, taking an x-ray or CT scan of a person is not a one to one picture of what is in the human body. It is only ever an approximation. That's true of all photography. Those images can be very useful in their own right, but it's always important to understand that some amount of information about what is actually in the person is now missing in the transfer from real life physical bodies to 2-D representations of the body. I hope this helped. Cheers.
I love how lovely and polite Emma is all the while not allowing herself to be spoken over. And Forest, you remind me of a young Bill Nye with the level of excitement for science. No one knows what Jesus was doing as his story ends at age 12 and then picks up again at age 32. What was he doing for those 20 years and why didn't someone write it down? It seems to me, however, that 20 years is just enough time for Jesus to be getting married and having children.
@anonymousjohnson976 There are some theories that show that he may have been in trading Caravans and learned a bunch from his travels East towards the Buddhist and Vedic disciplines. That would explain why he sounds so enlightened among all the barely even human middle easterners.
@@AtheismPoisonsEverything: Atheists do believe there is something wrong about slavery, as no human should be enslaved ever. The first commandment should have been "Thou Shalt Not Own Another Human Being." Leon Trotsky was an atheist and murdered many people; however, not in the name of atheism, but in the name of power and control. Christians, Muslims, and other religious figures have also committed atrocities; here are a few of them. The massacre in Rwanda, 800,000 dead in 100 days. (Mostly Christians killing Christians.) 2 World Wars started by theists (Germany, Czarist Russia, Japan, Italy) 90 million dead in 10 years. 10 million killed in the 30-year war. (More Christians killing Christians). The Lushon rebellion during the Tang Dynasty, 30 million deaths (not atheists). The 100-year-war, 3 million dead (yep, Jesus followers). The wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo (5 million dead in 6 years) (again, Christians). 40 million dead in the Three Kingdom Wars in China (not atheist). 6 million dead in the Napoleonic wars (again, Christians). So, what have we here with all of the wars, killings, atrocities and genocides going on with religion? Isn't religion supposed to be peaceful and bring harmony to the world? I guess not as look at what has been going on now in the Middle East for thousands and thousands of years over the land with each side believing the land was given to them by a god and the little children and infants suffer. Emma’s compassion shared around 34 minutes in brought me to tears. It is truly wonderful to have stumbled upon such wonderful role models in how to talk to those deconstructing. I didn’t have a formal deconstructing phase - I was basically pushed out of my Christian circles for being gay and I rejected their god over time on my own without really thinking about it. People shouldn't have to wait until college until they are taught about how rational thinking works.
I think I reasonably understand AI and although I won't say I'm "scared" I am definitely worried. It certainly is disruptive technology, in the sense that it will utterly change professional roles in society, and we have little insight in where it will lead. You don't even have to go as far as to wonder whether a malicious AI will be able to take over control of a nuclear plant, for instance. Just the effect on the ability to generate "fake news" seems like a game changer to me. The weak link will likely remain the human for now, but that is a seriously weak link. If an Indian scammer can get a naive person to hand them over all of their money, or hackers can take hostage the computer grid of a hospital, then please don't be surprised if deception with AI allows this to take on much more egregious forms.
@landsgevaer I'm not worried that the AI will rise up and destroy us. But I am worried about what humans will do with this technology. The limited not " AI" language simulation programs that are being called AI in the media are already proving to be tools of destruction in the hands of bad actors.

Whatever Lee’s intentions are his questions are similar to questions a lot of people have. When talking about biology in animals we talk about sex unless we talk about humans then we talk about sex and gender but we classify humans as animals too with apparently a special set of rules. It’s ok to ask questions. 1:24:52 a story about about someone being mistreated is sad obviously and shouldn’t happen but it has nothing to do with science.
@russellg9622 lots of people have questions, that doesnt make their questions good ones. Especially when they work to misunderstand the facts due to bias. science doesn't attribute value to how a human presents themselves. People do that. The most important realization i ever had is that science terms do not PRESCRIBE what something IS, they just attempt to DESCRIBE it. Saying humans are male and female isn't a RULE. It doesn't tell humans what to be, it only describes how they typical present. It is for ease of discussion, not for ousting individuals from society. And animals don't talk to us so we have no idea if they have "gender". We are humans w language and we can and do discuss and investigate what we are. Forrest is about the best person u could watch to understand sex and gender, if u don't get it after listening to him, I have to wonder if ur trying..

To be fair, it's not Richard's hypothesis, the phrase "technological singularity" was coined by mathematician, computer scientist and yes, science fiction author Vernor Vinge in his 1993 essay "The Coming of the Technological Singularity" which you can read on NASA's website. The concept is taken very seriously by social planning organizations like the Long Now Foundation, which has hosted multiple lectures, pro and con, on the subject -- Vinge thinks it's the most likely scenario, Bruce Sterling thinks it isn't.

Been trying to remember the comedian who does a joke about Jesus not really being known for his carpentry. That you'd think someone would have saved something that he'd done. "Have I heard of Jesus? You mean that guy that built me that wobbly three-legged table?"
There's also that Kids in the Hall sketch where they say they've discovered from archeological digs that Jesus was a lousy carpenter, and though he may have been a great spiritual teacher and, as some maintain, the messiah, that his lack of craftsmanship shows that he clearly had few career opportunities, likely unable to even construct the cross on which he was eventually executed.
Not sure if it's the one you're thinking of but there was a Kids in the Hall sketch with this premise. "Now this table has only two legs. I've conferred with many leading contemporary carpenters and they all agree that three is the bare minimum required for stability."
@@cameroncimmerius1203 LOL It may have been Kids in the Hall. Although I do seem to remember the specific line "wobbly three-legged table" because we all know that's impossible.

With Josh’s statement (not verbatim probably): “I watched the Ken Ham Bill Nye Debate and Ken Ham, when asked what would change his mind, he responded with ‘nothing would change my mind,’ it bothered me because he wasn’t being humble.” Bill Nye was asked the same question and responded with, “One thing! Just one good piece of evidence will make me believe in a god.” Again, not verbatim except the “one thing!” phrase. Also, Josh, I was in your position where all the evidence was stacking against my belief system that I had been born into to (Christianity) and I’ve always wanted to know what was true no matter what. I feel like the rest of my family convinced themselves that a god is real and just never looked into anything that would be against their beliefs unless it was in a setting like church where a pastor could manipulate their emotions and play on intellectual dishonesty to keep them believing.

So glad to see Emma back on the show. Especially cool that she's with forrest. We need more of her.
Yep and his fingers are in his ears
Lee also appears to very much like his own voice.
Cheers.

No one knows what Jesus was doing as his story ends at age 12 and then picks up again at age 32. What was he doing for those 20 years and why didn't someone write it down? It seems to me, however, that 20 years is just enough time for Jesus to be getting married and having children.

(Mostly Christians killing Christians.)
2 World Wars started by theists (Germany, Czarist Russia, Japan, Italy) 90 million dead in 10 years.
Shameful! There will never be peace if people do not obtain the critical thinking skills they so sorely need in order to stop all of the horrible killing, strife, sadness, starvation, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Thank you for sharing your talents and for the work you’re doing.
I really appreciate the way you guys handle the caller Josh. He seemed very genuine and inquisitive of his beliefs and journey to the truth. I experienced something very similar to his experience, mine began while in the military and the experiences during my multiple deployments to the Middle East. People who don’t understand AI at all, definitely seem to be scared of AI. What a surprise!
What a surprise. Humans being fearful, distrusting, and prone to wild speculation about things they don't understand.
This is why we need to teach the basics of rationalism and the foundations of science at a much earlier age.
I don't think we're going to have a dooms day scenario like in the Terminator, but we are seeing how disruptive it has become, mostly because of how incompetently it is being implemented.

Lee: Non planet Pluto is ok to teach because it was decided by a committee.
Lee: Gender and sex variations arent ok to teach because it was decided by committee..?
Minor nitpick but i think he agreed that gender is too fluid to be a binary. He kept clinging to the simplified version of bimodal only for sex.
@@AtheismPoisonsEverything You mean a christian clergyman that isn't? Much MUCH more prevalent in Christian clergy than any other group. Also, again, not relevant to the discussion, which makes me wonder if it's pure projection, you are accusing others of your own sins.
@HeywoodYabloome atheism isn't a religion, and despite it being looked down upon in both groups, Christian clergyman have an exceedingly high rate of it.
@HeywoodYabloome none. Atheism isn't a religion, as you'd know if you actually watched pretty much any of these. A religion has layers of tenets, and typically a belief in the supernatural. Atheism has neither.
Oh, and Muslims ALSO have high rates of inappropriate behavior towards children, particularly the clergy touching or doing worse to boys (esp in Muslim majority countries) , but also in the form of child marriage. The Muslim world might actually have the highest rate if inappropriate behavior towards children in the world

@@AtheismPoisonsEverything None. Not least because atheism isn't a religion, which you'd know if you actually knew anything about it at all, but considering your projection, that obviously isn't true. A religion is a set of tenets, typically set up around a culture and often including supernatural elements. Atheism is none of these.
Islam, on the other hand, is all of these, and has possibly the highest rate of inappropriate behavior towards children in the world, notedly in the form of child marriage (like their prophet) but also in the form of their clergy towards little boys in particular in Muslim majority nations.

It’s wild he actually can’t grasp simple concept of “yea most of the time it’s A or B but C-Z is possible and doe happen sometimes so it’s important to understand it’s NOT always A or B and in fact sometimes C does the walking not just talking” as important to teach in schools… it’s like he really only wants general stuff taught not the details IF they don’t line up with the GENERALIZED stuff… 💀 personally I view this as someone who openly is on ur side you think u can trust but slowly undermine what u do.. vs ppl outright opposed to u but at least u KNOW who ur enemy is with them.. I may be bias here but I despise weasel and ratty ppl who appear as like they aren’t openly.. 😂 that’s the vibes I get from him… the amount of times Forrest even Emma explained how u can teach BOTH and introduce it at different levels based on age/brain development stages is literally so damn simple yet this dude literally can’t grasp that or intentionally is tryna to undermine it… Emma basically said so we agree on everything basically though not on generalizations and inclusion as we literally can teach both.. doesn’t have to be one or the other… but u seem to have issue.. what are u trying to get at.. ? 😂 I understand all this the first example 20 examples ago and I didn’t even need the first one.. this man actually just either can’t grasp it or intentionally pushing bs.. again weasel rat vibes.. can’t be trusted .. wolf in sheeps clothing vibe if u will… 😂 he’s like wolf telling all the white sheep to really not worry or pay attention too much to the black sheep as including the black sheep in every thing the white sheep know and do will interfere..while the white sheep are like “huh hold up.. black sheep is still a sheep… wtf… we all move as one so we will sle down even take detours if it means including our black sheep… why do u care so much to have us focus on majority white sheep excluding the few black ones? kinda sus.. u look

@@InanisNihil- He was definitely pushing BS, as revealed with his claims that education is being changed for political reasons (which he disagrees with). He's like other bigots who try to present themselves as being reasonable and fact-based, while obviously promoting bigotry (e.g., "gender critical people," " race realists," etc.). He didn't address Emma's example of surgeries performed on children, to try to make them better fit cultural norms, because he doesn't really care about those people or about any other "anomalies" (his thinking, not mine). He wants to oppose support for trans people. He just used the "anomalies" to argue that people who don't fit into binary conceptions of sex and gender don't count and shouldn't be acknowledged in schools (at the very least).
@@loki2240 that last part u mentioned about anomalies and ppl who don’t fit… actually reminds me basic individuality… even as a majority and fitting in to many categories.. as an INDIVIDUAL I literally still don’t fit into some .. i think that applies to all humans period.. 😂 so to if I where to disagree with you there I’d logically be disregarding the places where I don’t fit in.. it’s exactly what ppl of his mindset do.. it’s wild to me tbh… 😂 t reminds me of the argue about bathrooms.. as a man I literally go to the bath to piss..

Richard called The Line too saying the same BS and when they showed how flawed his hypothesis was he got all butt hurt and condescending, and hung up! So now I can see how well he fared here! Facepalm protection strapped on, and ready to go!
Back: Yep his opening was the exact same script (literally read as such or memorized), and again he was shown to think way too much of how far AI is, and was way too confident of the outcome, and when shown fallacious he just took the easy way out and hung up!
I wouldn't at all be surprised if he does the very same thing many callers do: Call more shows and try his luck, or call again with different hosts (and of course complain about the ones who already showed he can easily be wrong)... He is not looking for answers, he's fishing to feed his conformation bias! He should call Joe Rogan, and Joe will be all fascinated by him...
He hung up on both shows because he’s a coward
To be fair, it's not Richard's hypothesis, the phrase "technological singularity" was coined by mathematician, computer scientist and yes, science fiction author Vernor Vinge in his 1993 essay "The Coming of the Technological Singularity" which you can read on NASA's website. The concept is taken very seriously by social planning organizations like the Long Now Foundation, which has hosted multiple lectures, pro and con, on the subject -- Vinge thinks it's the most likely scenario, Bruce Sterling thinks it isn't.
I wonder if this is Astroturfing, and he's being paid to get the idea of dangerous AI out. I don't know what such a generic fear could be trying to sell of sabotage, but I feel like someone so confident in their prediction wouldn't be so rigid in their script.
@@SaintJermaniaI know that, add Ray Kurzweil too, but that in no way means it is a must happen, nor that we are going to have it the way he describes it with nano-bots and all in only a few years, nor that we have no way to stop it! There are big problems with all of those predictions, because they are based on too many other predictions, some that are still physical impossibilities as of yet, like that we should already have working quantum computing, which we don't, that AI will get things right which it often doesn't... and that we it's creators won't build in fail-safes and have the ability to just cut the power...
@@TlalocTemporalAstroturfing? Like everyone isn't already leery about it and there isn't already enough fear mongering to warrant paying people, or it's forbidden to speak about which it isn't...
I agree that someone confident in their prediction wouldn't need a script, or not be able to say it in different ways, to communicate to people with differing understanding, but there's justified confidence like a scientist has in a well established and obviously correct theory, and being confident in a mere belief by some mental compulsion where one goes by the data, and the other the feeling, data be damned!
I noticed that every time he was countered with other possibilities he immediately jumps to some other mere unsubstantiated claim, as if it nullified their counter... typical blind faith believer unwilling to process any information that could lead to showing them wrong, because they didn't call to see if their belief holds up to scrutiny, but to fish for confirmation that they are indeed absolutely right, so they can reinforce their belief, which often leads to the belief that everyone is conspiring against them, or has already been brain washed by "THEY"... The fact that he wouldn't even consider any counter argument, no matter how valid, and even much more probable, and then quickly hung up as soon as he saw it was going know where, can be an indicator this guy is indeed overconfident, and somewhat psychotic, and I can easily see him on a rampage trying to get out his "Information" and calling all kinds of shows, and writing who knows... I would love to see him on Joe Rogan!!!
Isn't it funny that every doomsday sayer predicting the unavoidable and unstoppable end of civilization waste their every waking minute pushing it on others as if that can avoid the unavoidable? Why not just live it up until it happens in the knowledge that if it's unavoidable for all, then they are included, and no amount of preaching it can help?
I guess that every blind faith believer still has a sliver of doubt, or even a whole bunch deep down, and it's just something wrong in their processing center to not consider it.
