Why My Drawing Method is Not So Common

  • I am often asked why I don't draw in the most commonly taught way. The answer is the same reason why my teaching videos don't teach it. I didn't plan to be different, but as I developed my own drawing it seemed to be the only way I could get the results I wanted. This video explains the differences and reasons between the two.

    This is not the first time I have seen your drawing method but I am OLD. 😁 The sweet thing about this method it that if you get interrupted or you run out of time, your drawing still looks “finished.” Lovely explanation. Thank you. 🙏🏻❤️☮️🖖

      Well, depending on how much is undone, and I don’t necessarily add all the detail at the same time, but at least what I need in order to read proportions better. I’m sure there’s nothing new under the sun in drawing really, but the sun’s been around a long time 😀

    I'm self taught too. No way could I draw the way they do in art college. Your ideas have helped me to better my technique.

    What an immense amount of effort you are continually putting into this for all of us - thank you. I try to like and comment even when I can't finish the video, to assist with the algorithm beasts. This video of breaking down your self taught method in invaluable.

    While your drawing method is less common than most other artists who work with pen and ink, I've found that this method requires me to be a much more careful observer of my reference and, as a result, increases my accuracy, fluency and ability to improvise or "absorb" my mistakes into the drawing with much better results!

    You're in good company, Mr. Travers. Richard Schmid (Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting) described his similar approach saying, "I select a prominent shape and paint it as correctly and as completely as I can with its true value, color, and edges. An adjoining shape is done in the same way, then the one that borders those two..." I've only recently discovered your channel. Thank you for your generosity in sharing what you've learned.

    I call your method the careful add on method. And it’s really working for me. I was never good at that find the big shapes method anyway. That was in the same category as hard to translate to reality perspective videos. We need a book! Please🙏

    Had to come up with my own drawing method too. Most like to lay out the whole thing 1st with shapes or form but i lose accuracy that way. I work piece by piece similar to how you demonstrate but i draw a volume or box 1st then contour. Then continue to alternate between the two until i am finished.

    Loved it, thank you! Kann you do a realtime Version of the Berlin Cathedral? I would love to See that as an example Video for bigger Buildings. Where its crutual to get the Proportion Right. Best regards from germany

      I’ve done three videos of large drawings of the Berlin Cathedral at least. But at over an hour, they are just too long for real time I’m afraid. ☹️

    Would you consider doing a video about your use of grids and pencil on your more complex instagram drawings ?
    You draw what I would call some fairly complex drawings here on TH-cam using the method you describe in this video, so why do you employ a different method for the insta drawings ? (which are amazing btw). Does your TH-cam method become too difficult as the complexity increases ?

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I already have 😉
      th-cam.com/video/ZHZ1Q_8Oq3w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9AMJYBDcWwSExxxW
      It enabled greater accuracy more quickly, and was helpful as I’d just started drawing not long before. But I wanted to do location sketching and it was no good for that. 😀

    your méthode is realy powerfull from à photo 👍and i did it with a large village point of vue.
    But i think it is a little bit more difficult to be so efficient on outside configurations. What are you thinking about that? is it only a question of practicing degree ? thanks for your answer.
    👍👏👏 for the qualité of your work 😊😊

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, a photo is easier to draw from as it is already 2D. but life is 3D and we have to convert it to 2D ourselves. And often we don';t have as much chance to practice drawing from life.
