Back in the day early one morning, I saw two Bedford vans with a Chevette apiece on trailers heading out of Woodhall Spa towards Cadwell Park. They were tarmac testing before the Circuit of Ireland. A friend and I skipped off work and went to watch. After a few laps, Penti Arikala and Jimmy McRae returned to the pits to wait some new springs that were due to arrive. I asked McRae if he would take us round and he said yeah sure. We had to wait quite awhile, but both of us got a trip of a lifetime around the track.Arikala had a red Ferrari at the time and he’d trodden in a puddle so he put his socks and shoes on the vents on the dashboard and drove McRae sideways round the Cadwell track trying to dry his shoes and socks . I also then managed to roll my Ford Escort into a hedge at the bottom of the hill on leaving the track!
You must convert them all to HSRs. lol. They still make the bodykits in England. Find an old Jaguar rear axle and you're a third of the way there - sort of.
I was given my great Granddad's 1978 Chavette after he passed away, it wasn't a bad car slightly fussy about sub zero cold starts but rust was eating that car quicker than I could get it fixed.
I had a Chevette HS back in the early 80s, engine built by blydenstein in Shepreth. Awesome rally car. Had to be sold when I got married, apparently Mrs S wanted a house to live in. Still married but wish I still had the car as well!
My old Nan had a Chevette and she drove it like that...all round Kingston and Ham....she personified the phrase: "Drive it like you've just stolen it," 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant to watch back then, sadly I don't think we really knew what we were watching was so very good. Exceptional cars, drivers and days!. There was a buzz on the Ilse of Man when the International Rally Circus arrived, nothing like that now, shame really. This years Roger Albert Clark does seem to have caused a strange stirring though, or is it just in me?
Saw many of these cars in the 70s and into the 80s when helping to run various events. Now worth a fortune, particularly anything with a works history, or driven by well known figures. Not many of them left now from that era, probably Jimmy the best known, but one or two of the auld yins pop up on an entry list north of the Eng/Sco border.
Amazing car the chevette ,I remember at the circuit of Ireland rally when Pentti Arrikilla, in the chevette, and Ari Vatinen in the escort, I think Ari won the rally by less than five seconds
I've never fully understood the appeal of the Golf GTi, especially when there were hairy-chested, snarling, big-bollocked, dirty, nasty rwd cars like these
@@newforestroadwarrior Wtf?? These cars are forerunners to the "hot hatch", so there's the connection. There were musclecars before the Pontiac GTO, so those that came before the GTO deserve to be footnotes at the very least. There's no GTO in this video either, but it doesn't stop me mentioning it, along with pop socks, sandwiches, Tony Green and plywood figurines.
Someone made a comment once saying a golf r would be quicker than a group b rwd and i know this isnt even group b. Not quite sure what planet that person was on but a golf r wouldn't be anywhere near with the weight difference and even the modern advances It has.
the chevette has a long names around the world Like Chevy Chevette Chevrolet Chevette (On Brazil) Vauxhaull Chevette (On Australia) Opel Kadett C (Europe) GMC Chevette (Argentina) Opel K130 Isuzu Gemini (Japan) Isuzu Chevette and ETC...

Wonderful memories!!! Thanks for sharing that, sir.
Chevettes are still strong here on Brazil.
Nunca quis um até descobrir essa doença chamada "Rally".

Total respect between two drivers back in the good old days.
The Talbot Sunbeam driver nearly stacks it at 2:28. Nice recovery, just finished sending that text in the nick of time 😂
😁
RIP Brooksie you were Awesome.

Selfish bitch! Lol.
Great little cars. I had 3 over the years. And again wish I still had any one of them now. Lol
How lovely what kindness and respect with how they talked about each other
2:26 how he pulled himself out of that is good driving
Bloody hell that was a hell of a save.
Only he and his drycleaner will know how scared he was...lol
I have seen such terrifying driving. M.
Lucky for the cars parked at the side. Would have been bloody nasty that. 😬

I was there ha, ha. And many other years as well; absolutely fabulous rally. Love the IOM..

My god that sunbeam was lucky they never wiped out they were flat out he held it so well. it would not have been pretty if he left the road
❤️ forever a satisfied customer 🙏🏼
I had an HS. HMS109S where are you now?

No idea what you mean by that in relation to this video, as there isn't a Golf anywhere in it.

Absolutely
@@elbecko7969 and flumps. Flumps deserve a mention!
@@elbecko7969 With regard to the Golf Gti. Even the Sunbeam Ti or the Toyota starlet were preferable.
2:11. Russell's Escort GVX489T is still taxed and MOT'd!
How about the corvette
A time when it was skill of the driver and machines that won rallies rather than tech and money
For a few minutes there, I lost myself in normality.
And on the country lanes of Britain, the Chevette vs Escort battle went on until rust took over... and ended the game.
The Chevette looks very mean in Rally spec..
Does anyone know why the chevettes and escorts had such soft rear suspension?
Will this be released on DVD please
looking at the watermark, I'm inclined to believe that it was, but a long time ago!
No no Colin that’s not right you do it like this
💪😉

Looks scary. M.
I had 3 chevettes
European GM and FORD cars are always better
And the Sunbeam is Chrysler's European offering, hence the Mopar sponsorship
As an American, I can confirm😄.
Look up "Grosse Pointe Myopians"
Gentlemen
I liked that song he did in '74
