I ran a similar test in my Bortle 8 skies and the difference for emission nebulae (the filter is only useful for emission nebulae) like M42 was enormous. My assumption is that in low Bortle skies the images would look better without the filter but I've had no opportunity to try that out yet.

When wanting a quick picture when weather is closing in or time to go I've gone without the filter then used contrast to eliminate graininess.

Will try, been using my s50 a few times and just realized it has built in filter.
